Joey Merlino - 07/22/13 12:56 AM

Anyone have any opinions on what involvement Merlino has in the Philly family? Anyone think he'll eventually be drawn in if he isn't already?

Do he have any legal income?

the steffanelli tapes of ligambi talking about merlino would be able to make any1 he wants when he comes back implies that it was always the plan for merlino to return and run the family, but could things have changed in the last few years? Ofcourse. In his last interview he claims that hes a new man and is never returning to south philly(which is exactly what he would say whether its the truth or not). But right now hes under pretty strict parole restrictions and what he does when hes off of those restrictions will show his true intention. But im sure that if did decide to get back involved with the family their would still be guys loyal to him, mazzone and borgesi espcially, but also if he ever returned to south philly the feds would be all over him. If he was smart he would stay in florida.

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/22/13 02:22 PM

I thought it was a rug and tile company that was legitimizing his income..?

I don't think there's any doubt he's the man in charge and is waiting for his parole restriction to end so he can be seen with other LCN guys. If he was caught right now having dinner in Philly with some NY guys the Fed's would haul his ass in front of a judge.

If I'm not mistaken, after meeting with Steffanelli he called his parole officer and alerted them....??

He going back, Philly love him and he love Philly. He won a war to be boss why give up the boss seat.

Heres the atrticle where it says hes working for an advertising agency, but i guess he could have more than one source of income.

Yes your right he reported the steffanelli meeting to his parole officer right after it happened which was very smart bc they couldve easly have gotten him on a parole violation.

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/22/13 06:04 PM

Joey is a smart man and can do whatever he feels like doing at this point. After the formal process of checking in with the parole officer's/ finishing up all that sentencing stuff I just don't see the appeal of returning to the Philly/NJ area for anything other than visiting family being with wife/kids as there isn't really much going on out there besides food and shopping and even the shops with the best stuff are being shut down. As far as legitimate income anyone who gets out of prison is placed in some type of work and it has been confirmed that his legitimate source of income is from rug/tile business. In my opinion anything that involves labor/working with your hands/designing things is fun and good exercise so that is something I would actually want to do. The advertising / tv business is ALWAYS changing and not a consistent form of work/income and is probably just favor's/entertainment/something for him to do in his spare time. If Philly loves him so much the people/city needs to hurry the f*ck up and put some money into rebuilding the city sewage water/construction/ in certain parts of the city and make it a more desirable city to visit. Oh yeah and they also need to stop using cheap material / lead based paint and asbestos in their homes. And the kids in Ambler need to stop sniffing glue and acting like little jerks and give their "friend's" a quick call/email/text message to at least say "what's up"

Did I just here that right? Joey is a smart man?! Lol.

It's quite obvious that the guy is an idiot. Right up there with the worst bosses in LCN history, probably the worst.

Definitely top 5 worst

Fucked up a bunch of hits, , as boss of a family invites television crews to film him, absolute moron.

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/23/13 05:26 PM

yeah the tv crew thing was not such a good idea but the guy still went to war and was charismatic enough to amass enough followers to support him and beat every murder charge against him in his indictments and was out of prison before 50

The followers he amassed were all associates wasn't they? No made guys IIRC in the war against Stanfa.

The Philly family were completely fucked at that point anyway. You think if alot of the Scarfo guys didn't go to prison they would support Joey Merlino? He's have ended up dead in the street if the family wasn't obliterated.

Well all I know is what the documentaries on the Philly mob say. I've done no reading, nor do I have any inside information so I appreciate hearing what you all think. I had another question, big Ron Prevete claims to have been made by John Stanfa very unceremoniously. Anyone know anything about that?

Besides Mikey Chang no none of them were made and I'm not saying the scarfo guys would follow him I'm not saying he's a good mob boss I'm just saying he's far from stupid

Yes previte says he didn't have a ceremony but he was recognized as a made man under both Stanfa and Merlino he was even a captain at one point
Posted By: vinnietoothpicks26

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/23/13 09:38 PM

Thaddeus. The Previte been discussed ad nauseam (not insulting you just saying) on this board.
Ill tell you my thoughts, from what I have discerned from my research.
If you read the "Last Gangster" by George Anastasia. YOu will see from wire tap convos that he was in fact considered a made guy. He is spoken too by other made guys like John Ciancaglini, Joey Merlino, and Ralph natale as being another wise guy and is spoken to in accordance with mob protocol. \
References by other members as "this thing" and "friend of ours."

He was actually elevated to Captain, however, his status as captain may be debatable because he didn't have any made guys under him.

Moreover, if you look up articles from the 1990's on google (before he was outted) you will see that he was reputed (at least by the media) as being a wise guy and captain who ran south jersey operations for merlino and natale.
Finally, in the book, it talks about how a bunch of made guys from the new York families came to his daughters wedding. That's not something they usually do for a two bit associate.

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/23/13 09:44 PM

He never had a ceremony means he wasnt made. If he was introduced by the boss as made no one wouldve questioned it until stanfa died or was succeeded... Assuming he didnt rat, he wouldnt be recognized as made today by the current family

coming up he was a good armed robber. multiple stories of him coming out with 6 figure sums, he networked all over philly creating connections with other groups (mostly drug deals), in his 20s this guy was having ppl pay him instead of scarfo. regardless of scarfo and that getting locked up this guy was in his 20s.

on another note he murdered or ordered lot of ppl dead and he gets out before he is 50 looking all tanned and beefed up. 1 guy that said fuck the protocol im gonna be boss and do it my way. def a bad lcn boss but i really dont think he cared or cares

There's some truth to that. Merlino was able to weather all the internal conflict, including against Stanfa. He's also never been caught on tape.
Posted By: vinnietoothpicks26

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/23/13 10:11 PM

I agree in spirit Skinny. But clearly in application it wasn't the case. If you read the book and saw the exerpts of the wiretaps they spoke to him like he made. I am not saying they personally felt that, but they never made it known.

I think what happened is that Stanfa didnt give big ron the ceremony becasue he knew it was a violation to make an ex cop. If you look at the guys he made like jon veasey, its clear that Previte iddn't get the ceremony for a reason.
But Stanfa wanted that weakly kick, so I think he gave Big ron the run aruond and told him "your made".
Then again, Veasey could be lying and really didnt get a ceremony.
Posted By: Skinny

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/23/13 10:13 PM

no they had to treat him like he was made as long as stanfa was boss. He was only recognized out of respect to stanfa.

he wasnt lying, he was really introduced around as a captain.
Posted By: vinnietoothpicks26

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/23/13 10:14 PM

Except hte timeline is all off. Stanfa went away in 94, and Big Ron started working for Merlino and Natale right after. So there was a 5 year period where big ron was "recognized" in spite of stanfa; whom was hated by Merlino and Natale and was away doing 4 life sentences.

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/24/13 01:43 AM

I don't think he was a big earner he made a huge armored car robery.. Straight up armed robbery not a good earner, but thought I heard he got some good cash from that armored truck.. But maybe he made a good profit selling drugs with the blacks and pegans..he probally made a little earnings there
Posted By: Giancarlo

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/24/13 02:08 AM

Marine that wasn't an actual robbery. Everyone was in on it and basically Merlino walked away with the money and the guys on the truck claimed the bag of money fell from the truck on I-95. Merlino kept all the money and never paid his partners so they testified against him and Joey did 4 or 5 years for it.
Posted By: Giancarlo

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/24/13 02:19 AM

Ok i checked and it was one of the guys on the truck that left the money somewhere for Merlino and Barone to pick up and then they claimed it fell off the truck.

I was wrong that Merlino kept all of the money, he actually kept half of it and never paid his buddy on the truck. I think Merlino and Barone split the first half of the cash and then Merlino kept all of the other half for himself.

Here's the story in the paper after Merlino was convicted.

Yea but he was recognized as a made man and even a capo under natale and Merlino. Do you think that maybe they didnt know he didnt go throught a ceremony and just assumed since he was recognized as made under stanfa that he underwent the ceremony considering merlino was made by stanfa with a ceremony

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/26/13 07:18 PM

I think Merlino is getting bashed way too much and everyone is entitled to there opinions. Merlino is a stand up guy who did his time and didn't say shit about anything. He is real LCN in my opinion. Also, that rat Stefanelli tried getting Merlino to take the bait on potential money making schemes which Merlino stated he was not interested shows he's really not as stupid as most think. If he was he would've incriminated himself on tape but he didn't. Later he finds out after reporting the Stefanelli meeting to the FBI he's covering his steps not a "stupid" person would do. I'm curious if he really is going to do a reality TV or book deal this shows he is officially done with the LCN. Does any one have any current news on this book deal? Side note I hope that fat pig Ron Previte eats himself to death soon. I couldn't stand hearing that fat rat talking and acting so smug calling those philly guys who accepted him dumb for taking a chance on him being an ex-cop. He's the biggest greedy unloyal half siggy yet.... Merlino was right in saying "too many rats I don't want any part of that".

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/26/13 07:23 PM

Previte is a piece of S&%t, no doubt..

I wonder who Merlino has been seen with in south Florida, he's got to be heavily watched.
Posted By: Caramela77

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/26/13 07:31 PM

I'm not sure exactly just from the news they were making the impression Merlino was bringing unnecessary attention to them for being in Florida. I think he is realizing there is nothing for him in Philly with him being stand up and doing 12 yrs would Ligambi or anyone agree he should get back his old money making operations or a piece of the action which he would be entitled to. I don't think so too much heat is on Merlino and them. It's wise for him to go legit or at least for now.

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/27/13 07:08 AM

Merlino's other nickname is lucifer, and they say he's the father of lies, so I don't believe a word he says, prison made him wiser and for someone that has his balls all of a sudden get a brain to match??? It can be very dangerous!
Posted By: Thaddeus

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/27/13 07:20 AM

Caramella you hit the nail on the head. Hearing that slobbone Previte talking shit about Stanfa, how he was stupid for trusting him cuz he was an ex-cop, was enough to make me wanna puke as well. The dude is a scum bag. Scum of the earth that guy.
Posted By: 22

Re: Joey Merlino - 07/27/13 12:50 PM

You know the thing about Previte he acted like making money was simple. He acted like he could walk in to a casino and just pull any scam he wanted.Like in the book the ''Last Gangster'' he just would open his mouth and cash would come out, according to him.Always thought he was full of it.The thing about Joey was don't really know what kind of earner he was but it just seemed liked everyone paid for him just to get close to him.Like GA said going somewhere and saying I'm with Joey made the person feel untouchable.Like they always said Joey didn't care where the money came from or how you earned it.As far as doing time he is a true stand-up guy but then again on the other hand they say he never paid his gambling debts.

the min this guys of off supervised release he boss again taking back phiilly and probably have a strong hold of south florida, young guys. he can be boss and have a bunch of legitiment steak and cheese shops. how man capo's in the Gambino and Genovese families own outright companies. top tomato guy, keys food. it goes on and on frank cali worth 25 mill he's probably a boss. I don't believe he quit one second. none of his south philly guys are rats. those were all stanfas guy or scarfo guys read between the lines when merlino gives these quotes to newspapers.

I could predict that if Scarfo was out on the street for another year he would of killed Joey. He probably was hesitant just because of his Chuckie but Chuckie went to jail in early '86 and less than a year later the house came down, but if they got indicted in say '88 or so I think it would of been done.

ALJ Excuses Taxes
A New York administrative law judge has ruled that "the estate of a businessman held to be responsible for taxes on a once-prosperous Manhattan strip club does not have to pay more than $4 million in back taxes because the club became so thoroughly infested by organized crime that it was unmanageable" as reported by Joel Stashenko for the New York Law Journal:

While the late Frank A. Marchello was properly held by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance as being a responsible officer for the V.I.P. Club, Administrative Law Judge Winifred M. Maloney concluded that Marchello was thwarted, through no fault of his own, in carrying out his corporate duties by mob influence that one federal prosecutor said had "bled the club dry" financially. The same was true of Steve Aslan, a man Marchello hired to manage the club at 20 West 20th St.

Both the Gambino and Genovese crime families allegedly had their hands in the pot during the time period at issue:

Gambino crime family figures Salvatore "Fat Sal" Scala and Thomas "Monk" Sassano muscled their way into club operations and began collecting "protection payments" ranging from $2,500 to $15,000 every two weeks from Aslan and co-manager Jon Vargo, the decision said. * * * To compound matters, Judge Maloney's determination indicated that Vargo was also making payments of about $5,000 a week to the Genovese crime family and that, over time, Vargo took more than $1 million out of the club to pay gambling debts he had incurred with Genovese bookies. * * * In all, Judge Maloney calculated that at least $4 million was siphoned from the club through extortion and other payments related to organized crime between the club's opening in 1996 and 2002, when it collapsed financially.

During that meeting Licata and Fazzini discussed the structure of the Philadelphia mob and Licata quoted Ligambi about Merlino initiating members when he gets out of jail.“Licata explained that Merlino is calling the shots from jail,” the memo reads in part.Read more: http://www.gangsonny.com/archives/1247#ixzz2bCZXdeR0

Isnt it a parole violation for joey to be so public with known members and associates of the mob? The only reason I can think why they havent violate him yet is because they must have another snitch around him and thier looking for bigger charges

Could be, I couldn't find anything on him.

"Supposedly" Merlino has been seen with restricted people especially at his 50th birthday part in Fla. I'm not sure why they didn't haul him in after that...??

the luisis in boston were under skinny joey merlino and phillys guys umbrella, cause the new england guys are somewhat of a joke and none of them are 100% italian. the luisis and his crew operated in boston tax free cause they were with philly. Re: Joey Merlino - 08/10/13 11:11 PM

I really have no idea who's running things in philly these days. But we do know up to the date of that meeting between the Gambinos and Ligambi that was taped by Stefanelli, that Merlino was the official boss of the family and Ligambi at that time was the acting boss.

I think the current acting boss is Mazzone and if for any reason Merlino doesn't come back when all of the restrictions are off of him, then i would think Mazzone will become the official boss and John Chang the UB. But those Scarfo guys are a real wildcard. They could cause problems.

Ligambi won't be around for at least a couple more years. I think he's going down at the upcoming trial even if it's considered a bullshit case.

Just the way it looks to me. Could be completely wrong. lol

I do think Merlino is still officially the Boss and currently Mazzone is the acting.

When Merlino gets off all his restrictions then we'll know what the deal is. They're not pulling in enough money to keep sending him envelopes so he either comes back and runs things or he stays south and decisions will have to be made. If Joey stays in Boca then i think Mazzone will become the official boss.

Once again, just the way it looks to me.

Re: Joey Merlino - 08/11/13 12:27 AM

in the old days the Genovese or Gambino put the boss up for philly. I still think merlinos just waiting for his parole to be over. what less then 12 months. he can be 100 percent legit and still be the boss/leader. other familes are. he wants to own steak shops go for it, he's been out 2 summers he could have ssold his life story by now. didn't the buffalo boss own a pizza chain. 3 summers ago there having dinner with the Gambino and acknowledge joes the boss. im like ivey when the fbi says other wise i'l believe. and if merlino is not boss mazzone got more clout then the scarfo guys who are the same age. scoops should be boss, and when ligambi and all where being recorded never heard them trash merlino. or bent finger never said shit. there hasn't been a story about merlino in a couple months.

You always hear how killing a boss is one of those sacred mob rules you can never break. Well how come for all that time Merlino was trying daily to kill a boss that NY picked, nobody came down from NY and either read him the riot act or killed him?

Funny how that works.

Well there was that tapped phone call recording between stanfa and one of the sicilian gambinos. And stanfa was complaining about merlino and how he just wanted new york to send some guys down to help take him out, and the gambino said that they were"at his disposal" but then they mever sent anybody.

Exactly. So where were those Genovese guys that consider themselves to be the enforcers of the rules then? Merlino should of been killed after his first attempt to kill Stanfa if we are to believe those rules.

The zips had their own major problems in the 1990's. I'm talking about the commission. Why didn't they get involved when Merlino was trying to kill a sitting boss? He should of been dealt with. If he didn't back off, he should of been killed. Right?
Posted By: Dellacroce

Re: Joey Merlino - 08/11/13 01:05 AM

Ya i gotta think pre commision trial they they wouldve gotten involved. But during the 90s who wouldve gotten involved? Gotti who did the same exact thing(or was he already in prison when this was happening?), vic and gas psycho asses, and the both the bonnanos and the columbos didnt really have enough influence to do anything. And the only reason i can think about the chin not getting involved is maybe the geneveses were somehow profiting from all the chaos like they did after the bruno hit.

Re: Joey Merlino - 08/11/13 01:12 AM

Dont mean jump in 5 cars and start making moves,There are feelers out there more then norm ,Stanfa was a joke to new york look at the guys he had around ,the boys were belly laughing at his guys look like little rascals ,and when he called he was led on talk in circles to him they did.. it is the right time when these guys get out they have history and knowlege.and philly has some older guys ,its the right time..If they dont kill each other

Rules are rules...right?

It was NY who picked Stanfa and it was NY that installed him as the boss. He might of been the biggest moron in the world but when a soldier can just start going after the boss and trying daily to kill him, well isn't that a big no no?

According to your pal Phill it was the commission that gave Stanfa the job so Merlino going after him is really a big fuck you to the NY bosses. Wouldn't you agree on that?

Rita was always my favorite Merlino. I always joke she's probably the toughest Merlino out of all of them.

Here's a decent picture of Natalie with Ligambi and Staino from at least 10 years ago. I think it's from when Joey was on trial like 13 or 14 years ago but i'm not positive. She's alot younger then her brother and sister.

Yes Borgesi is another wildcard. I think theres a real good chance he beats the case and is soon back in philly. He beat the 13 charges that i think this case is based on but for some reason the jury didn't come to a decision on the racketeering charge. I really thought they should of made it 14 out of 14 instead of not guilty on 13 out of 14 with the big charge left unsettled. But thats just my opinion on the case. They might have more evidence now at the second trial but i'm really not sure.

I also think its not very smart that joey has a instagram... Not that its illegal or anything but it sure is a good way for the feds to keep tabs on everything he does/posts.

If he was with friends and family he could be showing them (feds) that he is just a normal guy living life...
sometimes hiding in plain site is best.

ewwww.... bobbytran! If you have access to molly's I would hate to see you when you come down... not a pretty site i'm sure. those are most likely implants but they look good not too big so she can play golf and tennis and not have it look overwhelming or begging for attention. That is how they should look these days, no more oversized balloons that can pop at any second. There isn't anything wrong with someone having instagram it sounds like you people on this forum would like to see Joe and the family all huddled up and hiding out so you can make yourselves feel better. as far as everyone else thanks for not posting pics of any kids or family that isn't fair and its very violating.

I disagree with you azguy, for the most part mob bosses are smarter today then they were in the eighties and nineties, the only way merlino gets lockedup again is if they can connect him to a crime that he committed in the past, theres no way they will catch him for doing something now or in the future, he will be so insulated they will not be able to touch him

Probably a question that has been asked but when does joey get off probation or allowed to return to philly...Depending on borgesi outcome the crew could get back together with Stevie joey and Georgie ... Some of the others who plead out early are out in a couple years too...things could get real interesting off passyunk

Re: Joey Merlino - 08/31/13 08:00 PM

if he got 3 yrs supervised release he probably only got 6 or so months left till he can run the show or prove to us the public he left philly and the mob. me. I think he still the boss. he is the future of lcn. like vinny gorg or allie boy if they didn't get life. or maybe he steps down for 1 of the scarfo guys and goes underboss or consig. he seems like a charming leader people love him, he could have a reality tv show 2 yrs ago or book deal movie deal. hes lcn. he wants to be lowkey cause he loves the life. this guys crew killd for him. they did the hit at the courthouse, veasey brother. that whole gang is gonna all be out with the young scarfo guys who he hung around with. hes lucky he didn't get made in 85/86 or he be in jail with all those other guys narduchis Milano pungs, grandes. his dad got taken down was a his blessing. seems like joey was around all the guys in scarfo era. he been in jail with other bosses maybe he learned a few things.

Re: Joey Merlino - 08/31/13 10:18 PM

Joey's never coming back.

Get over it.

There is ZERO evidence he will. From his actions and what he's stated repeatedly.

The only talk of him returning is by people who WANT him back.

And regards Joey being 'complete LCN' is crap. He was young, brash, loud, showy and obnoxious. Gotti mould. A TV gangster. Ligambi's reign was twice the 'true LCN' than Merlino's ever was.

all merlino will do is get people indicted

not too mention it ain't good to have the boss playing softball for the paparazzi

He could stay in FL and come down for the occassional meeting without drawing too much heat. Still recieve kicks and what not. He made guys in Boston and had a crew there. Its very possible he will or has made guys in Florida who will run his crew there.

Re: Joey Merlino - 09/01/13 05:24 PM

Joey is over 50 now. His kid's are growing up, he's lucky his wife has put up with his crap over the years. I don't think a lot of people realize when your locked down for that long, you need a breath of fresh air. He's cozy right now, because he's new on the scene. I know he's been out for the past 2 years but with restrictions and even when those restrictions run out he could easily take the bait from someone depending on how his cash situation is looking like. When he starts to run low on cash, he'll become desperate and that's when he'll slip up. I hope he does go legit because he does have that outlet, he is marketable. He knows it, he has legitimate friends, and people who want to get close to him he just has to be very very careful.
Posted By: azguy

Re: Joey Merlino - 09/01/13 11:43 PM

He's the Boss, uncle Joe basically said so, why is that so hard to understand. he's lying low until his restrictions are up and then he can basically do whatever he wants with who ever he wants.

I'm not arguing about what title he carries, all I'm saying is if I were him I would try to go legit given his age and the fact that feds have a hard-on for the guy.

Re: Joey Merlino - 09/02/13 02:01 PM

AZ, I don't know when he gets off but is six months a dead on date or a aprox. Because he was booted out of boca raton condo . Now he is said to be looking into a book and or movie deal,if not already done. Now this is not something i know this is something i herd.So if that is true then no way he is going back to the top spot Philly is to close of a community , they will take that as a sell out. Now if he did not get any money for a book or anything he is going to need to make a move soon.If it is a legitimate move or getting back to the street. Now feds have tried to get him hard once already so six months may be a problem.

Yeah, I'd like to know what happened with the posh condo situation, I thought that was a close pal of his...?

Maybe the association board found out and they don't allow sub lets or rentals in that building. Some association require the owner to live there.

I agree, if he writes a book or consults on a movie he's done with the life but I bet that's just a piss poor rumor. He needs the life...

Re: Joey Merlino - 09/02/13 08:14 PM

reason I don't by the movie or book deal is he would have already did it its been 2+yrs and books arnt paying nomore. in whiteys trial john hitman martorano only got like 50gs for his book he did get 200k for his movie rights but that was 10yrs ago and no movie made. how many of the philly guys can tell there story crow, crazyphil, tommydell.his kids, ron private, ralph natale you really think joey merlino wants to right a book your a sucker if you been out of jail 2 yrs and havnt started 1 legit company you probably cant and never will. it was primetime to put out his book during ligambi trial. john gotti jr movie is never getting made and who cares about his book/life. joeys got 1 play, mooch of his gangster wannabe friends.

You think maybe chuckie merlino had a personal beef with long john and told joe do it or did uncle joe have authority as acting boss to call for his head.

Re: Joey Merlino - 09/03/13 02:04 AM

from what i understand(which maybe wrong) was that long john wanted to take over the family when he came out of prison, so uncle joe being acting boss definatly had the authority to take him out if he thought long john was a threat to him.

That stuff i know , My backdoor came out to scarfos courtyard.I have known them since 1970 .What i was asking is Joey he would come down each summer and him and jr. were the best of buds . But after like 86 he never came around. I know why but i am talking about him as an adult. As a kid he was an complete idiot. He would steel start fights with kids that nicky hung with everyday,He was just one of them jerkoffs. But like i said he was gone because of his dad and sr but when they all got pinched it was over there. You did not see hardly anyone but blood family .

Tommy dell fipped before crow. Dell was a capo. Noway
Did long john die in this century over nick crow that would just be dumb. T. Dell did the damage. Arnt the pungs good. South philly could have a strong fam there alot of money to be made I believe joeys the real deal but some of the young executioners can have the top spot and he probaly dont care, they loved his dad right.

The hell with the condo. Scarfo had the right idea, a nice house right on the water with a beautiful boat in the back yard. Hell if i had that i'd never go back to philly. But unfortunately for Merlino he doesn't have the money that Scarfo was reeling in.

Well he'll have to wait and earn that or mooch off some guy that's half-a-fag to buy him another car or house. Look what happen to Scarfo Jr. is really worth to live it up like that for what 3-4 years then times that amount of time by 10 ...he'll be sitting in prison for at least 20-25 years with this case coming up.

Actually Scarfo Jr is looking at 2 big cases. The bust with the Lucchese guys and that bank fraud or whatever it was case. With his priors he's going to come out of prison an old man if he goes down on both cases which i think he will.

No, i agree with you. It's most definitely not worth it. I've mentioned that in past threads. How guys sitting in a cell for 20+ years can think it was worth it no matter how much they made is beyond me.

I was sent an E-mail said Joey is still Joey,He said in Veaseys book Joey took a fox crew out to a bar gets drunk and drives like a freek. He then takes them to a pool hall as a producer came out of the men"s room Joey grabbed a pool cue and hurled it like a javelin at the producer"s head .goes on to say more stupid stuff. That is the stuff he would do as a kid.Now this was when he was running a family.

Island : I did not read all of that book but i think that Phil said that they sneek out an ally to Florida ave.And he would to park Nickys caddy most of the time.....But i don"t think he said that 26 and 28 Goriga ave. at the front {is east}to the sides and rear of the two property"s had a block concrete wall 8ft tall{that would be south west and north } but that was put in around 1979 . Before that had a regular wood fence .You could jump the fence and go {south}to atlantic ave {north to artic ave.} or {west} out the back to Florida ave. or you could go {north} to half street and go in the back door at {club Madrid}then in 1978 Allen Angeloni bought it and remodeled it and named it Angeloni"s....did he say that ? I did read my name in his book but he was nice...more?

Re: Joey Merlino - 09/04/13 10:25 AM

Serpiente : was down in your old area earlier this year - doesn't look like much has changed at all in the housing development recently - run down and in need of some serious work or a bulldozer! Not much Italy left in the area either - I'm sure you know all of this though. I have pics but can't figure out how to post or maybe just laziness!
Question for you though : I've heard Phil's mom went into Scarfos place and looted the walls for all the cash- what are the chances there is still some cash stocked away in walls floors trap areas .. I'm sure the Feds cleaned it out but you never know I guess. Could be a windfall for another tenant or landlord...

Jose :Gone all of us are gone.Out of thousands maybe 25 property's owned by Italians. And yes it is close to the bulldozer time.No way on the CASH his wife has gone through little Nicky has gone thru .Now there must have been 10 differnt people that rented the last 15 years.I did watch Phil's girl go in the grandma's apt. building and come out with 3 shoe boxes of cash the evening he flipped."Then went in Angeloni's put the boxes on the bar showed mary her sister what was in one kissed her went over to her other sister and kissed her . Conchata is her name and i never seen her or Phil again."Untill i was standing between the Whitehouse subs and Mucks poolhall and Phil rounded the corner onto artic.ave from gorgia ave. shot me a look a smerk i gave him a head bob like whatsup and gone never seen again. And i don't know if this is out there but his wife did spend a lot of money after the pinch..I think Phil tells that somewhere ,But i know it from two other people that were around her.

Serpiente- Yeah I was driving past and it just seemed like a real quiet street now , I'm not sure what I expected ... I definitely saw what you guys mean about the back alleys and all that - this day and age the Feds would have that figured out but its kind of a maze back there for sure and during the early morning hours I can see what Phil meant ...
It's just different times I guess but the heat that neighborhood would bring down with all the Merlinos and Blades and Young Sal and the capos coming around all the time would be a huge red flag these days ... You must have seen a lot living around those guys back in the day ... Interesting times

Jose - Yea small city..and ducktown was like 5 by 6 block area that was Italians. And it is a maze back there. Between the two 26-28 N Georgia ave. was a large rolling steel gate and when that went down it looked like something. Yes it was a blast "I was born in ducktown raised there and in my late teens and into my twentys lived right behind the bar lots of action 5 houses from Nicky OOOO my yep it was fun.Not just for me but the hole area.Dam shame it was what it was you know the deaths and all.

I hope that doesn't get me in trouble on forum but its true . I bet when my fam was walking the boardwalk nicky was making sure it was okay ... Now he's not there and it's screwed ... Re: Joey Merlino - 09/05/13 08:42 PM

No offense Serp but AC is a dump. Only reason to go there is for the casinos. I like the Borgata myself.

I'm hoping Steve Wynn opens that casino in philly. Looked pretty nice to me in the renderings he showed the other day. Just north of the Sugar House which i don't really like too much. But Wynn knows how to build a nice place and i'm hoping he gets the ok to put his new joint in philly.

Stockton? I can't speak for it today but years ago when me and my friends were in our college years it was known as a total party school. But it could be totally different today, i really don't know.
Posted By: Serpiente

Re: Joey Merlino - 09/05/13 09:11 PM

G carlo : Stockton i don't know how that came in,but it is the size of a high school these days..And just like i explained , AC is a small ghetto they made all the large nice houses into 5 apts. around 25 years ago and the renters ruined them, and the people that own them did nothing to stop it ....it is falling apart. And yes we go to Borgata and Revel and a couple beach bars are ok..But the rest of the city is done.I live down beach in a small town longport but my taxis are when i say CRAZY i mean it,but it is sweet place to live,if you like the beach.

Steve Wynn can't tell you what a great man he is ,we made a small fortune with him, his stock that is ,we put a load in as soon as he built and it split so many times...my mother was in with him before he came here so we had a little advantage, and the years that followed we we b allowed to stay in Frank Sinatra suite man a 5 bedroom nice set up private elevator ,it's own security guard, he kept it open 24/7 i just had to check in with shift boss and we were in..

Re: Joey Merlino - 09/17/13 06:05 PM

I couldn't find anything on them being connected. I found the article on him making the ID's and threatening the president. I also found the article on him getting drunk and having a standoff with the cops saying he was going to kill himself. Everything he's done bad seems to be situated in Florida. Maybe hes with the Florida crew?

Secondly, I may be wrong but he says that his brother was on the side of Merlino for the last 4 years...wasn't he in jail for 2-3 of those? I may be wrong but I thought Joey just got out....

Sounds like someone made an account on here to try and bolster their reputation.

Re: Joey Merlino - 09/30/13 10:58 PM

Peter does seem to have issues. does sounds like either schizophrenia or drug induced psychosis usually caused by a lack of serotonin in the brain (too much weed and alcohol and other depressants which bring out paranoia and anger. split personality most likely not, more like anti- social disorder or very mild form of autism. He probably stresses over unnecessary things and hides out a lot. Either way if Joe B and Peter B are twins they have done studies in which one twin is certainly more adjusted than the other. Joe B isn't the most approachable type person but prob not as bad as Peter. either way... the shot in the stomach should have been a wakeup call and from what is looks like he doesn't seem to have steady employment. I say the boy needs to pop a few 5 htp, shave his head and spend more time at the gym and do something productive and nice.

There are different strains of marijuana, some strains depress the nervous system and when mixed with alcohol causes paranoia and depression. It is true that marijuana does make people with anger issues more relaxed but that is just temporary. And too much weed does make some people manic and unable to shut up

Law states a person with a medical marijuana card could grown 10 plants and harvest three at a time until the first dispensary opens which is supposed to be in the Spring of 2014. Once you get your card, the doctor gives a list of 8 certified growers/caretenders and you get patient rates. $125 per half an ounce, $200 per ounce. All indoor grown and they have so many different strands of THC and are now making "tincture drinks." The drink is a 4 ounce bottle and it feels like you've just hit a vaporizer, great buzz, legal:)

That's funny Joey does G. I'm guessing GBL not GHB that helps your muscles recover if you lift a lot. But to drink that shit and party your vision goes like some girl that's been drugged on CSI

Re: Joey Merlino - 10/10/13 06:03 PM

It was the NBA playoffs in June and the sizzling Miami Heat was on its way to another win at AmericanAirlines Arena. But the real scorcher was the red-hot staredown that turncoat gangster and nightclub heart-throb Chris Paciello was having with Philadelphia mob boss Joseph (Skinny Joey) Merlino. The two tough guys exchanged looks-that-could-kill across their court-side seats.

The eyeball-attack began after Merlino spotted Paciello, who became a government cooperator in 2001, seated near him at the game, according to a reliable Gang Land Florida source. Skinny Joey, the source said, threw Paciello "dirty looks" and wouldn't stop even after "Chris stared right back at Joe."

Like Merlino, the Brooklyn-born Paciello was with a few friends when they locked eyes, said the source. Paciello, 41, whose run as a South Miami Beach impresario was interrupted by a seven year sentence for a 1993 Staten Island robbery-murder, has lived in Miami since his release in 2006. Merlino, 51, has lived in Boca Raton since his prison release in 2011.

After the stare down, with Skinny Joey shaking his head in disgust, continued for a few minutes, Paciello and his entourage walked over to Merlino and his buddies. "Chis put his face right in Joe's, they were almost nose-to-nose," said one source.

Joseph Merlino"That's right, I'm a rat, and I'm here, at the same game as you" said Paciello. "And if you got anything to say, I'll crack you in the fucking head and knock your teeth out," he added, according to Gang Land's source, who spoke only after being assured of anonymity.

Merlino was stunned into silence by Paciello's bravado, the source said, and the South Miami Beach club owner and his group returned to their seats following the brief exchange.

Paciello became a South Beach icon and frequent companion of high-powered women celebrities including Madonna and Ingrid Casares in the early 1990s when he fled New York and opened a nightclub in the wake of a botched home invasion robbery in which a housewife was killed. Casares, his business partner for a while, accompanied Paciello to Florida meetings with acting Colombo boss Alphonse (Allie) Persico, and one he had in Brooklyn with the family underboss Persico was convicted of killing, William (Wild Bill) Cutolo, according to FBI reports.

Madonna, Lourdes and Chris Paciello in John Roca PhotoGang Land was unable to reach Merlino. Skinny Joey, as Gang Land reported in July, is trying to open a business — a restaurant and cigar bar are his top choices and is very conscious of the strict post-prison restrictions that he will be under until next year. So much so, that his meetings with Daniel (Danny Pro) Provenzano regarding a possible movie deal are always attended by lawyers, Merlino told guest columnist George Anastasia.

Paciello did not respond to a message, but Keith Fink, his Los Angeles attorney did. Fink acknowledged that the two men ran into each other at a Miami Heat game "months ago." There was a brief exchange after Merlino initiated the conversation, the lawyer said, but his client never said he was "a rat."

"He's a businessman, not a gangster," said Fink. "He said, 'You're a tough guy?' and Chris said, 'Yeah, I'm a tough guy.' That was it," said Fink. "Chris doesn't know Merlino, or who his friends were, but he knows who he is."

Sofia Vergara in John Roca PhotoMerlino wasn't the only one throwing barbs at Paciello this year. In January, he was blasted as a "dangerous thug" by ex-flame Sofia Vergara after he had a widely reported dustup with the Modern Family bombshell and her fiancé during a wild New Year's Eve brawl at Story, a nightclub he owned at the time.

Sources say that Paciello, a former associate of the Bonanno and Colombo families, according to his own testimony, is friendly with several other former New York-based gangsters who became cooperating witnesses and are currently enjoying their own My Blue Heaven in sunny Florida.

One of them, sources say, is Fabio Bartolotta, the former leader of the violent Queens-based Giannini crew that operated out of the Giannini Caffe in Ridgewood in the 1980s. Bartolotta, who was released from prison in 2004 after spending about nine years behind bars for several murders, served some of his prison term in the same Witness Security Program facility with Paciello.

Fabio BartolottaBartolotta, 40, owns and operates a pizzeria restaurant business in South Florida, and is partners in a second eatery with a brother-in-law, Giuseppe (Joe) Sciulara, a former Bartolotta co-defendant who also cooperated with the feds and is living in the Sunshine State.

Paciello, who also owns pizzeria restaurants in Los Angeles, recently sold his South Beach nightclub Story for a reported $600,000. Sources say he also has a financial interest in a Miami Beach hotel. "He's a businessman and he has several business ventures," said attorney Fink, who declined to elaborate.

Re: Joey Merlino - 10/10/13 06:18 PM

Yeah Paciello's tough. Thats why he ratted.

And Joey's still on Probation, getting into a fight sends his arse back inside so he cant slap Paciello. And Paciello knows this.

So Paciello's a REAL tough guy.

Pathetic.

Chris better watch it, Merlino's buddy Bonfiglio is a "charasmatic hitman" as reported by CAPPONY earlier in this thread....I still give Chris the upper hand.

I'm scared of Bonfiglio, those are a MEAN set of ojos.. even a fuck off glance in my direction would send me running home to my mom!! I'd VOLUNTEER to give them my purse even before they had a chance to rob me!

RE: Joey M. I read that he "made" Ralph N at soldier level and then promoted him to boss. Is that legitimate? Who made joey M? Stanfa?

If so, was Stanfa recognized by the NYC 5? I know little Nicky was, and I thought that Stanfa was told to go back to Sicily after jail bit, as a penalty for being present at Bruno shooting? And I thought that NYC recognizing you makes you legitimate LCN.

Point is; aside from his dad and uncle being made, is Joey M for real, made LCN? Or is he part of a gang? Would anyone outside of Philly introduce him as a "friend of theirs" ?

It was rather unorthodox but yes.

Yes.

Yes. And he had the backing of the Gambinos to assume the boss position in Philadelphia.

Merlino is a legit made (LCN) guy.

If by "friend of their's," you mean they'd say "He's a friend of ours," yes. Because, as said above, he is a made guy.

Do anyone know how Joey was made boss after the war,any did Ny ok it?
Posted By: NickyWhip

Re: Joey Merlino - 10/15/13 03:00 PM

Thanks IvyLeague. It's not totally clear (from books/internet reading at least) whether Stanfa had the Gambinos backing because G. Anastasias "Last Gansgster" book says when Ralph Natale says he reached out to Gotti when they were both in prison about Stanfa, Gotti said something to the effect of "Who's knows him?". But, other internet sources say Gambinos had his back.

Internet and books say that RN has embellished a bit regarding his stature in LCN. No doubt the guy is a stone killer; but was he well-respected in LCN? Doesn't appear so. Looks more like a a good "potential" puppet for Genovese's bidding in the Philly territories?

Scarfo SR. wanted to whack out Joey M. And Nicky SR definitely was aligned with Genoveses; Bobby Manna in particular. When Nicky SR was jailed, the Gambinos backed Stanfa in an effort to get some control in the Philly territory. Once Stanfa was jailed, did the Genovese's back Natale? If so, who from Genovese exactly backed RN? The Chin? Bobby Manna?

If this is the case, Did the Genovese's also back Joey M, directly or indirectly, either during the stanfa/merlino war, while Natale was in jail? OR after Natale went away for the final time, because of Natale's connections to them? If so, this leads to an interesting twist with Scarfo Sr. Scarfo would not be happy if his Genovese friends backed a guy who he wanted dead; especially Joey Merlino. But, it's always about the money.

Or...Did Joey M NOT have any backing from anyone in NYC? Did they decide Joey M and Philly had nothing going on? Or did they simply move around and beyond Joey M to get what they wanted down in the philly territories? Thus, Joey M was the leader of a Philly version of the LCN which appeared to struggle getting anything started; only some gambling, drugs, and internal strife?

If bookmaking/loan sharking /illegal gambling is the hub of LCN money, it seems that the reports of Joey M and his friends betting bigtime into LCN-controlled books in Philly may have contributed to the current state of Philly. Under Joey, did Philly LCN have any other rackets going? Do/did they control any unions?

Local news reports claim that Joe Ligambi has focused primarily on gambling in an effort to rebuild and that Joey M is still a gambler. They could clash if/when Joey M comes back to town and starts dicking the Bookies again Is Ligambi recognized by any family in NYC? If so, he's gotta know that Joey M's gambling philosophies are not gonna jive well and NYC LCN is gonna want it taken care of.

If NYC doesnt recognize Philly, where does that leave Philly in terms of how to classify the current organization? LCN or something less savy, like a gang from south philly who have similar initiation rigths as LCN, but plays by different rules?

thanks to any/all who can answer

I think we are both wondering the same things; what is/was the state of Philly LCN, in terms of backing by NYC and legitimacy, between the end of Scarfo (1989) and current day.

But to answer your question, Ralph Natale was made boss immediately upon release from prison in like 1994. It was right after the Stanfa/merlino war. It was in name only though. Joey M and his people kept natale in the dark about a lot of things. But, exactly who from the NYC LCN backed Natale, I don't know..

Re: Joey Merlino - 10/15/13 03:22 PM

Stanfa was backed by the Gambino's. He was very close to the sicilian faction of the Gambino's. Leonetti said it was Gotti that pulled the plug on Scarfo being the boss and as a favor to the sicilian faction of his family backed Stanfa.

Stanfa was extremely close to the Cherry Hill Gambino's. They're the ones who protected him after the Bruno hit. He was hiding in Maryland and working at one of their pizza shops until the cops finally caught up to him. The Gambino's were also the ones that got Stanfa a pass for any possible involvement in the Bruno murder.

According to Leonetti ..Stanfa was almost hit in NY the same day Caponigro and Simone were. Stanfa was waiting for them to return to the bar he was at in NYC. When Chins guys went to get him they didn't know who he was, one of them thought he was Scarfo so they told Chin it was Nicky but Chin knew it wasn't because he knew where nicky was so when the guys went back to get Stanfa he was already gone. I think Frank Sindone was with Stanfa in NY too.

After Stanfa completed his sentence Gotti asked Scarfo if it was ok for Stanfa to come back to philly and Scarfo said yes as long as he doesn't cause problems.

After Scarfo got locked up i'm pretty sure Gotti got the ok from the commission to have Stanfa replace Scarfo and that was that...Stanfa was the new boss in philly.

Most of this is in Leonetti's book.

You have to remember it was Carlo Gambino himself who asked Angelo Bruno to make Stanfa. He did it as a favor to Stanfa's family back in sicily. Stanfa has been close to the Gambino's from day 1.

Re: Joey Merlino - 10/15/13 07:49 PM

thanks. I did read all of that in Leonetti's book and internet. EXCEPT for the part about Bruno making Stanfa as a favor to Gambino. That part, I did not know. And knowing that, now makes me understand how Stanfa came to run Philly.

Ligambi has been made since 1986; being convicted/overturned for the Flowers hit. Does he have any pull/support in NYC? even more so, Does Philly need the approval of NYC at this point? Based on the charges, Philly is playing safe, gambling/sharking ops. With the exception of a few who are involved in drugs.

I am really curious as to how Joey Merlino is viewed by NYC? He's proven that he can do time; at least on racketeering. 12 years in Fed is no stroll. But, when all is said and done, are they gonna want him back in Philly? Do they have a say in it?

I think NY has enough issues that they could care less about Philly, any of the 5 families probably can do virtually anything they want in and around Philly without much fallout with the family in such disarray.

nickywhip- if your asking what ligambis relationship with new york is, are you aware of the Stafenelli tapes? where there was the meeting between john gambino, nicky stafenelli, ligambi, licata, and i forget who else, where they were basically just bullshiting about mob history and stuff. that was just about the extent of ligambis relationship with new york. im pretty sure the meeting was arranged through licata who probably has the most contact with new york guys just because of the location of his crew, and i think he might be partnered with the perna crew with bookmaking.

There was sort of a "cold war" between the Gambinos and Genovese, with the former backing the Stanfa faction and the latter backing the Merlino faction. There was something a littler similar previously where the Genovese supported Scarfo, while Bruno had been closer to the Gambinos. It seems each of the two larger NY families wanted their guy running the show there. I don't think the Genovese had any love for Merlino or Natale necessarily but it was more a case of keeping the Gambinos from gaining more influence. Of course, alliances constantly shift in that world, and sometime later you had members of the Gambino and Genovese families plotting with Philadelphia family members to kill Ligambi, Mazzone, and Borgesi. Later on it seems Ligambi was recognized by New York. I would assume Merlino is now too.

The Philadelphia family had influence with the Roofers Union years ago. And with the HEREU Local 54 in Atlantic City up to the early 1990's. But they've basically been a street operation for the last 20 years. They're similar to the few other remaining small families outside New York. There's still some semblance of a hierarchy, but it's breaking down, and they're just making a living on mostly the bread and butter rackets.

Re: Joey Merlino - 10/16/13 01:19 PM

Thanks. These responses confirm what I was thinking. I did read the small parts of the Stefanelli tapes which Anastasio and the web had posted, but I couldn't find the whole transcripts. I am not sure if they are available.

I agree with the Genovese/Gambino alliances changing in Philly with blowing winds. But, if anyone from those families are involved with Philly, they better watch out when/if Joe M comes back. Because, if Joey M hasn't curbed his guzzling habits, I wonder how the guys are gonna feel if he starts his antics again. Anastasia's book said he would bet 10 reverses a day; that's nutty.

Re: Joey Merlino - 10/16/13 03:36 PM

Just curious...if Ligambi is or was backed by the Genovese why did he run to the Gambino's about phillys beef with the Luccheses? You know the meeting in North Jersey that Stefanelli taped. I would think a guy like Barney or whoever was in charge of the Genovese at the time could of been more help to them then the guys Ligambi met with from the Gambino's.

Do the Genovese still have guys (sports book) working in philly and south jersey?

Question: In all seriousness, how likely is it that if Ligambi gets convicted, Joey comes riding back on a white horse to claim the throne? Wouldn't other guys who have been earning in the city feel it was their turn to step up?

I'm just curious because it would seem if I was out there busting my chops on the street and all of a sudden a guy came back who was put in the can for not doing quite a great job in the first place, I wouldn't necessarily want that guy to hop back on top given his tendencies to screw it up in the past. I don't know all the facts or inside info in Philly, just wondering what the other soldiers felt like with his alleged return to the city.

Now if he was just laying low and came back be different.

I know people in NY and anyone i ever talked to about this Joey thing and NY ,have no clue ,who why where .

I think feds were coming down so hard on all the family's that they let it all slip by,From Stanfa on down.

Re: Joey Merlino - 10/17/13 02:17 PM

Reading the internet, local papers, etc., The Feds have a real hard on for George Borgesi (hairline) & Joey Merlino. Joey would be nuts to come back.

The Ligambi and borgesi trial should have started this week. News says Ligambi is gonna get 15+ years if convicted. It didn't say about Borgesi's potential sentence, if convicted. But, the retrial is a regurgitation of previously presented evidence, which backfired on the government, so who knows how it will play out for them.

IF BOTH CONVICTED:
Mousie got busted on a drug rap, so he's out . Handsome Stevie, is temp boss, so maybe takes the throne permanently? Or Mikey Lance steps up?

IF BORGESI NOT CONVICTED: He and Joey are boys. Even though he is Ligambi's nephew, they despise each other. So, if ligambi goes but borgesi doesn't he may take over.

IF NEITHER ARE CONVICTED

I don't know how much Ligambi bows to Joey Merlino. He is not a flash guy, so he's gotta clash with Merlino on this aspect of their ruling personalities. He's smart enough to maintain distance from Merlino, who is a giant Elephant in the room for the Law, no matter where his is.

I know the media/tapes, etc, all have joey as boss from jail, but Joe Ligambi's comment about letting Joey Merlino make soldiers when he gets out, can very easily be taken in the context of Joe Ligambi just saying "hey, I'm not worried about what Joey Merlino wants. If he wants to make guys under him, let him deal with it". OR the comment could mean that he didn't have the authority to make those other 2-3 guys and he needed Merlino to do it. But, isn't it also true that Joe Ligambi didn't make the 2-3 guys because he didn't know them? If so, that supports Ligambi doing his thing; not what Merlino wants.

It's reasonable to think that Merlino now has his gambling issues under wraps now and that he got a good criminal education in jail; Maybe he can become a good earner. And, with that, he may be a different boss the second time around. But, Philly LCN is definitely on the ropes right now, due to the current cases. They couldn't handle any more turmoil. If he comes back and Ligambi is on the street, it could create problems; regardless if they play nice. But hell, I don't know these guys personally, so it's all conjecture at this point.

When Joey come back to South Philly, he is and will still be boss. Any of the guys try to tell Joey that he is no longer boss, Joey will put on a Halloween mask and dust off the mac10 he used on Nicky, Jr.

El Fiore is a hidden treasure in collingswood I told everyone I know about this place for years, now a lot of people know and it's crowded. Bistro di. Marino is amazing, as is Nunzios which is a bit pricey but very nice ambiance.

I'm sure you already know this Giancarlo the Genovese Family looks out for the Genovese Family that's why Ligambi went to John Gambino. Plus after Lenoetti went bad and then Natale. Stanfa and Merlino goign at it; it's all bad for business why get involved??? If the Genovese Family wants something they're going to take it/get it on the other hand the gambino's have always had a solid alliance with Philadelphia

The Genovese never "backed" Ligambi in the sense of backing him in a conflict. They, and the rest of NY, apparently accepted him as boss (acting anyway) eventually.

Definitely in South Jersey. Not sure about Philly.

Re: Joey Merlino - 10/18/13 12:51 PM

If ligambi is found guilty i think the hierarchy in philly will stay the same as it is now... Merlino top guy in the shadows, with mazzone as acting boss and chang either #2 or #3.. Lance will probably stay a capo.. and if Georgie gets out maybe they will give him his #3 spot back. Georgie just dont seem like boss material and even if he beats this case, he will end up back in the slammer soon enough... Merlino and Ligambi are like family. Merlinos dad is the one who brought him into the mob basically. So i dont see the Joey's fighting with each other. I also dont see Merlino coming back to South philly anytime soon, but thats just my opinion and I may be wrong.

And also with all the Scarfo guys getting out of jail, they just did about 25 years so i doubt there gonna come home and be street soldiers and collect debts and stuff like that.. theyre gonna want bigger action with less heat.

Re: Joey Merlino - 10/18/13 04:55 PM

@VEGAS el Fiore is awesome. And so is bistro di marino. I haven't been to nunzio's in years. When I lived in Collingswood, we hit all of those places. I never like villa barone though. I thought it was...meh. We really liked Cucina Forte in Philly. 8th and Catherine.

@Mazzone: I agree with you wrt heirachy. And, I don't know if anyone can speak to the presence/absence of the Genovese in South Jersey, unless someone on this forum REALLY KNOWS someone in the Genovese, or if it's been made public knowledge from law enforcement reports. It is very easy to (correctly) assume that all of the NYC families have some action going on in SJ; shore areas, etc., because Philly Mob hasn't been strong enough or savvy enough in the past 10-15 years to keep the other families out.

It's common knowledge in this area that it's a free-for-all when it comes to crime. There are lot's of biker gangs; warlocks, pagans, etc.,and also th ethnic gangs on the rise. Every small town in SJ has threats of bloods, crips, MS-13, russians, etc. I know that NYC also has these threats, but the LCN can at least hold their territories there. Go to South Philly and count how many italians vs. vietnamese, russians, camboians, blacks, etc. Packer Park & a few other areas are holding their own, but other areas are over-run.

Scarfo's guys served a lot of time. It would take all of them to band together once they got out, to right the ship here. Faffy, Pung's, Narducci's, etc., would have to come in and help these young guys out. Not sure if it would work or not. For a time, Chuckie Merlino was the biggest PHILLY guy; Scarfo spent a lot of time in AC. Who knows what he told his son at breakfast about Faffy, Narducci's, etc. For all we know, Joey Merlino may love these guys; or he may want them all dead. But, if they are smart, they all stay away.

What happens if Ligambi and Borgesi are convicted? The law knows the hierarchy; It's easy for them to just shift attention to the next guy. Bust him, and then repeat. Pretty soon, guys are gonna realize crime in philly LCN will be a guaranteed sentence. Or, they won't. What do I know; armchair LCN clown that I am.

In October 2000, 6 people including Thomas Floriani, Richard Crossan, and Frank Grabon were indicted in Philadelphia on charges of running a bookmaking operation tied to the Genovese family. The operation stretched from Philadelphia into New Jersey.

In June 2003, 19 people including Genovese captain Ludwig "Ninny" Bruschi and soldiers Rocco Petrozza and John "Blue" DeFroscia were indicted for running a sports bookmaking operation that stretched throughout New Jersey.

In August 2005, 16 people including Genovese captains Larry Dentico and Ninny Bruschi, and soldiers Michael Borelli and Michael Crincoli were indicted for running a sports bookmaking operation that stretched from New York, throughout New Jersey, and into Philadelphia.

In February 2008, 37 people including Joseph Pasquale, Richard Crossan, Thomas Floriani, and Michael Pesin were indicted for running a Genovese connected bookmaking operation that stretched into South Jersey.

In April 2009, 34 people including Genovese soldier John "Blue" DeFroscia and associate Thomas Conforti, were indicted for running a bookmaking operation that stretched from North Jersey down to Atlantic City.

In June 2013, 22 people including Richard Crossan, Thomas Floriani, and Louis Carlesimo Jr., were indicted for running a bookmaking operation tied to the Genovese family that stretched from North Jersey to South Jersey as well as New York.

Feel free to Google any of these cases.

Incidentally, in February 2008, there was another bookmaking bust in Philadelphia where 9 people including a guy by the name of Brad Pesin were indicted for running a sports bookmaking operation. I've wondered if he is related to the Michael Pesin that was involved in the New Jersey bust that same month and year.

People should also remember that the 2004 New Jersey OC report talked about how the Genovese family had been expanding into Middlesex, Monmouth, and Ocean Counties. Talking too loudly about this expansion was reportedly one of the reasons Larry Ricci was killed.
http://www.state.nj.us/sci/pdf/ocreport.pdf

I've posted this 2005 article before...

A Genovese crew in New Jersey allegedly headed by reputed capo Lawrence "Little Larry" Dentico is charged with running a major sports book out of social clubs, bars and delicatessens in North Jersey and Staten Island. The illegal betting operation got bigger each fall as more and more bettors, eager to wager on the NFL and college football games, found their way to the mob bookies. There were so many gamblers looking for action that the Genovese family expanded into South Jersey and Philadelphia — traditionally the turf of the Philly Cosa Nostra.

Lol if by illegal earning you mean selling drugs where they grew up and shooting tourists over a backpack. Ohh wait I think "the blacks" been doing that for awhile. The decimation of LCN is due to Rico statutes, informants, advances in gambling technology and access to offshore betting.

Online gambling in NJ starts on Nov. 26.

So far the Borgata, the Golden Nugget, Trump Plaza, the Trump Taj Mahal and the Tropicana have permits for online gambling. Should be interesting to see how they do. AC has really been hurting with all the new competition from neighboring states.

If I'm not mistaken, the legalized online gambling involves poker and such. Not sports betting. And even if that were to become legal, which I'll believe when I see it, there are many players who don't want to put their money in some online account but deal face to face with someone they know. They can also bet on credit and don't have to put up the money beforehand, like in a casino.
Posted By: Wilson101

Re: Joey Merlino - 11/04/13 02:23 PM

Betting on credit is the only advantage, a lot of young gamblers nowadays use five dimes or bovada with no problems.

In this weeks Gang Land..Merlino says Paciello never said a word to him.

"He never got out of his seat," said Merlino. "He never came up to me, he was scared to death. He never even looked my way. It never happened."

Merlino also told Capice that:

"Whoever told you that story is a lying motherfucker," said Merlino. "Trying to make these fucking rats look like tough guys. He thinks he's a tough guy because he killed an innocent lady in front of her kids. If that was me I wouldn't be allowed in the place. The cocksucker didn't look at me. He never got out of his chair. It's a joke.

And personally i believe Merlino's version of it more then i do Paciello's. Just my opinion though.

I hear you about Paciello, and Merlino is in good shape, but have you ever seen him in person? He's about 5'3 tops, and has prob never been in a fair fight in his life. His reputation makes him tough, but one on one I guarentee he's a gnat at best.

Lol. He's feared bc of his reputation, not bc of his physical prowess. 14 years in prison may have toughened him up mentally but you're kidding yourself if you think he scares anyone physically.

Maybe he's feared because he was a mafia boss who has done 14 years in prison, opened fire on someone in a restaurant with a machine gun, killed people and ordered others murders. Lol sorry his biceps aren't big enough for you to view him as a tough guy.
