Harry "Sugar" Brown aka Bernstein aka Barlow

By any chance does anyone have any information on Harry "Sugar" Brown aka Harry Louis Bernstein, Harry Louis Barlow?

His criminal activities were curtailed sometime in the mid to late 1980's when he got in bad trouble with the IRS for tax evasion. I cannot find any information on the case though. Does anyone remember anything about it or know anyone who would or who would remember Harry?

Harry was the nephew of Jake the Barber Factor. Harry was deeply involved with Meyer Lansky and was best friends with his brother Jake. He was also friends with Jimmy Blue Eyes Alo , Bugsy Seigel, Lucky Lucciano, Stumpy Stompanato--those are all the names I can think of at the moment but there were lots more. Harry was active all over the country--New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, Kentucky, Los Angeles, Louisiana, Miami etc

Sadly Harry died a few years ago. But the good news is that he had reformed from his criminal ways and became a Born Again Christian (actually in his case a Messianic Jew).

Any information about Harry "Sugar" Brown would be appreciated.

I've never heard of him. There are entries for the following individuals in the Kefauver Report with these names.

Harold W. Brown - President of Hollywood State Bank (Part 10 - Nevada).

Harry Bernstein - who loaned some $ to an individual and is listed as being with Loew's Theatre's (Part 6 - Ohio & Kentucky)

He is not listed in the McClelland Hearings Index.

I find it difficult to see anyone becoming a Messianic Jew good news, no matter how big a thug he was. Others may very well have different theological positions.

That is interesting--thank you! Was it some type of crooked loan? Harry had been into a lot of loan sharking and bookmaking.

I forgot to say in my opening post that in the book "Little Man" by Robert Lacey there is a photograph of Paul Ricca, Salvatore Agoglia, Charles “Lucky” Luciano, Meyer Lansky, John Senna and Harry Brown when they all got arrested together. Maybe that will help lead to more information on Harry?
