Russian crime boss Ivankov dies in hospital

MOSCOW -- Vyacheslav Ivankov, a Russian crime boss who spent nearly 10 years in a U.S. prison, died Friday in a Moscow hospital, two months after being shot several times coming out of a restaurant. He was 69.

His death was announced by the main federal investigative agency, which said the cause had not yet been established.

Ivankov had undergone several operations since the shooting but was never well enough to leave the hospital, state news agency RIA Novosti said.

After spending 10 years in a Soviet prison for running a ring of thieves, Ivankov moved to the United States in 1992. He was arrested by the FBI in 1995 and convicted of trying to extort millions of dollars from an investment firm run by Russian emigres in New York.

Ivankov was extradited to Russia from the U.S. in 2004 to face murder charges, but he was acquitted.

He was shot in the abdomen on July 28 from a sniper rifle fired from inside a minivan parked across the street from a Thai restaurant. The gunmen has not been identified and the investigation was continuing, the investigative agency said Friday.

Police feared the death of Ivankov - known as Yaponchik, or Little Japanese - would set off gangland wars, Russian news agencies reported.

I always loved to read articles and books about Ivankov and the Russian mobsters. But no doubt another high ranking mobster will be in the spotlights now.

I remember that in some article they speculated at the time Ivankov's death that the killer already had been found and killed by rivals. Might been a speculation after all.

It seems he is a member of the "Kutaisi".
Oniani is now in prison in Spain, where it became known that the subdelegation of the Government in Catalonia protected the Georgian mafia run from Barcelona by Oniani and his lieutenant, Malchas Tetruashvili .The gangsters had created a true criminal industry thanks to the profits obtained from drug trafficking, white goods and weapons. The Oniani had bought dozens of restaurants in the center of the city and on Las Ramblas with which they were preparing to launder the crime money.

Seems like this is a conflict that has roots from the 1980's between Vory V Zakone Ilya "Maho" Simoniya vs Vyacheslav Ivankov and Aslan Usoyan. Simoniya had his title even taken away in 1993 by Ivankov and Usoyan, but has regained it back in 2019.
