Gotti: The Last Photo
Bureau of Prisons image taken months before Dapper Don's demise

FEBRUARY 26--Here's the last photo ever taken of John Gotti, the murderous degenerate who once headed the Gambino crime family. Gotti, the so-called Dapper Don, posed for the below Bureau of Prisons photo on October 17, 2001, less than eight months before he died, at age 61, at the federal prison hospital in Springfield, Missouri. The Gotti image was released this week in response to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by The Smoking Gun (we've enlarged the original 1" x 1" photo). According to a BoP letter, the color image was Gotti's "institution commissary photo." The once-robust Gotti appears frail in the prison photo, which was snapped more than two years after the convicted killer was operated on for head and neck cancer.

And his FAMILY IS FURIOUS over it being released? Imagine the nerve of these people? This was a guy who was responsible not only for so many murders, but for hurting so many people with what he did in his life. And now HIS family wants privacy? They feel that his dignity has been compromised? What nerve!

I love this line by his daughter : "It's sad, really, since my father's last wish was to not have his grandchildren see him ravaged by cancer," said the younger Victoria, a mother of three.

What about all the children and grandchildren having to see photos of their dead fathers or grandfathers on the front of the newspapers, killed by the hand of a John Gotti? What about the last wishes of all those that he murdered or ordered the murder of?

I never had anything against Victoria Gotti, but now I think that she's become somewhat of a hypocrite. It was ok that she exploited and used her Father's name by adding it to the last name of her Children ( whose real last name is Agnello) in order to promote and make money with her Growing Up Gotti Show. Now all of a sudden she's preaching dignity and privacy.

Right on all counts, DC. Plus: he was, next to Al Capone, the greatest Mob publicity hound of all times. Can't have it both ways.

I was living in Springfield when Gotti died. Used to drive past the prison hospital every day when he was still staying there. It looks like an Ivy League dormitory from the outside front (except with razor wire around it).

But the story at the time was, he actually died in an "undisclosed" civilian hospital in Springfield. The biggest was Cox South and is probably where it happened, if the story was true.

Well, talking about our Rights from the point of view of Civil Law and Constitutional Law, it is not fair breaking private life of a person, no matter if he is a killer or not. Despite he ordered the killing of many people, nobody have the right to break our privacy. I don´t know about USA Constitution, in Argentina Article 19 of our Constitution protects that matter. If I were a relative, I would sue the one who shows a private matter against my will. In Argentina there is a jurisprudence called "Ponzetti de Balbín", it was about a magazine which took some pictures of Ricardo Balbín, (a long time politician who lost against Juan Domingo Perón the chance to become the President)being in a critical condition, in coma and conected with so many machines you can imagine in a critical condition area. Those photos were published in a famous magazine, and his widow sued against the Magazine telling it broke the family privacy and SHE WON the trial. There is another case about a Former President, Carlos Saúl Menem. The magazine published a matter about an unknow son he has, Menem sued against the Magazine and HE WON. The fact is the same, the magazine borke his private life. On the matters you don´t hurt other people, you can do whatever you want in your private life. If someone get into your privacy against your will, you have the right to be protected by the Law.

If it is true then I believe I know what hospital it was, and no it wasn't Cox South.

And for the record he died in a federal prison, but was recieving cancer treatment at St Johns in Springfield. I know this because my girlfriend's uncle is a medflight pilot for St Johns and was the one to airlift Gotti from the federal prison to St Johns.
