Does anyone know how that works? How come we don't see this kind of hearing anymore? Can the mobsters refuse to show up since it's not like a court summon?

There's not as much of a need today for this kind of stuff since the RICO statutes are being better enforced.

I'm no lawyer but I suspect if you were subpoenaed to appear before Congress you'd better go.

Right on the money, SC. Plus, the subcommittees don't get much from mobsters who "take the Fifth" after each question.

Yes, if you're subpoenaed. Congressional committees and subcommittees don't have standing power to issue subpoenas--the full Congress must pass a bill specifically authorizing a committee or subcommittee to issue subpoenas.
