New Jersey Mafia?

New Jersey Mafia? - 03/02/03 02:34 AM

Just to get a little information about the Mafia in my own backyard, I'd like to know about the current New Jersey Mafia. Hunterdon County has been affected by the Mafia by way of a couple of murders in the past year. I'd like to know if there are bosses of each county or if there is a boss that controls more than one county and has sub bosses or something. Since Jersey is one of those weird states that is divided into counties, I'm interested in how the Mafia works here.

You'll get the definitive answer from Turnbull, but I'll tell ya that the DeCavalcante Family was (recently) the only major Family actually based in Jersey. The five Families from NY have connections in Jersey, as does the Philadelphia based Family.

The spheres of operation sometime overlap, and I don't know of any one group solely responsible for each county.

The most-often-mentioned NJ Mafia family is the DeCavalcante Family, named after Sam (the Plumber) DeCavalcante, so-called because his legit cover was a plumbing business in Kenilworth, NJ. After he was convicted of racketeering, he retired to Florida and turned the reins over to John Riggi, who's now in jail. The current head of the DeCavalcante Family is said to be John "Jackie Nose" D'Amico, a big pal of John Gotti. Labor rackets are the family's specialty.
However, a big faction grew up around the Atlantic City casinos in the late Seventies and early Eighties, under Nicodemo (Little Nicky) Scarfo. AC used to be under the thumb of Angelo Bruno, the boss of Philadelphia, but he was murdered, and Little Nicky rode high until the feds sent him away forever. Hard to say who's in charge in AC now.
Yeah, you're right: NJ is one of those weird states all divided up into counties. I guess we should be like normal Louisiana and be divided into parishes.

OK, we're splitting hairs now, but I think Alaska is divided into something other than counties (I don't know the geographic or political term). Louisiana is cut up into "parishes".

I'm not talking, literally, "counties" -- "counties" is just a word. I consider Louisiana's "parishes" the same thing. I mean, basically, "regions" of a state. It all boils down to the same idea - and I don't know of any U.S. state that isn't divided in such a way.

When someone says "NJ is weird" cuz the state is divided up, I have to say "what?!" cuz EVERY state (as far as I know, unless otherwise proven wrong) is also...

eah, I came from Florida, and I just find this "county" stuff funny. But ha, at least it's not divided into parishes
I guess it was just wishful thinking that there was a boss for each county. That wouldve been cool.

Well if you want to see the true destruction by the Mafia in New Jersey, just look at Newark. Once a prosperous city 50 odd years ago but because of a Mayor with huge ties to the Genovese Family (I think) it turned to ruins and slums. The Mafia bled it dry. The Mafia owned that city

Nobody got South Jersey so im gonna claim it for myself and my amico's. I think i'll start my wacking the president of my school cause he's a dick. Then start some extortion rackets, i can use cape may county as my dumping ground.
