Meaning of Dago? - 09/28/02 03:08 AM

Any of you guys know what Dago means? I've been reading a book called My Years with Capone (reference used by Deniro for The Untouchables). he gets pissed of when somebody says that (yup one incident he killed a guy in a bar for saying that in his face) . Thanks.

I think it's spelled dego... It's an Italian racial slur... Similar to guinea, wop, goombah, greaseball, and guido.

Me and my homeboy Joe started a crew called the Daygos (spelled creativly) I think its just a sort of deragatory name for Italians like Guinee )mispelled) and Wop.

actually the term is spelled Dago Anthony it can also apply to Portuguese or hispanic and even French people to an extent, it applies to anyone with dark hair and tan skin but if you have the dark hair i think it would still aply to you.It got to be mainly an Italian slur because of the large of exodus from Italy to America which at the time was mainly ran and full w/ lighter skinned and haired people.

I wonder about the actual origens if the words. For exaple, Wop means With Out Papers, when many Italians were undocumented immigrants. **** comes from people who are Latino saying "Yoo **** inglich".
Is Guinea a reference to Sicilians supposedly having African blood or where does Dago come from?

Edited by administration.

Re: Meaning of Dago? - 09/29/02 02:30 AM

It's funny how most people assume that Sicilians have African blood because they assume Hannibal was black but he was sub-Saharan African which some people wouldn't even Consider african, Hannibal was most likely olive-skined and no where near black, not to mention that the original egyptians were white.

I just now noticed that slurs applying to Italians aren't censored on this board but words applying to blacks, and Hispanic people are.

The origin of "dago" is "Diego," a common Hispanic or Latin first name. Therefore, to refer to all persons of Italian or other Latin origin as "dagos" is to disparage them by denying them any individuality. The same kind of bigotry motivates calling Irish "micks," which derives from the fact that so many Irish last names begin with "Mc".

Where does the word guinea come from? I hope not to offend anyone, but i would like to know where ignorant people like to get their racial terms from. I never knew a wop was without papers..in that case everybody who came to America must be a wop.

Many places in Africa are named Guinea... but i'm not sure i know it's used for Sicilians who supposedly have African blood in them.

Way back in NYC history the NYPD began to be comprised of a majority of Irishmen, or men of Irish extraction.

Having been brutally oppressed themselves upon their arrival, the Irish slowly were climbing up the socio-economic ladder and fell into what sadly seems to be human nature...finding a newer, poorer group of people under them to abuse and the Irish cops were very brutal to the newer immigrants especially Italians and Sicilians.
The NYPD then coined the phrase W.O.P.

This is not an indictment of the Irish, it's just a small illustration of what has been going on for millennia--people putting down others to feel good about themselves, for cheap labor and to use as scapegoats for everything.

Oh yeah...one group of people had papers always...the Africans who were kidnapped in Africa (Yes I know, sometimes by their own people) and sold to slavetraders who in turn sold them in the USA had papers that said they were the property of other human beings.

Damn, you are good turnbull!

I always wondered about those origins, especially since Woltz calls Tom "KrautMick..."

So what is Kraut from? Obviously German origin, but I'm not sure what Kraut translates to.

Any ideas anyone?

It means cabbage, shredded cabbage, sauerkraut.
The German people make it wonderfully. In WWI and WWII American soldiers began to call Germans Krauts.

That's what happens to intelligent people like you, you miss the obvious because it looks too simple. I've read many of your posts and you are definitely an articulate and informed woman.

You are also a beautiful lady, along with LDV, PastaPunk and others. You all prove that it is not impossible to have brains and beauty. I say these things with the utmost respect to you and your family.
