London mob flims

Ive been wondering have any of the amricans on this board seen london gangster films such as "Snatch" and "lock, stock and two smoking barrels."

Ive only seen them recentlty and they are easily the best british films ive seen in ages!

Snatch was, I think probably because of Lock Stock's financial success in the States, co-produced by British and US backers. I've not seen Revolver, but Ritchie's newest gangster film seems an interesting one.

Many of the US members on this board have seen Lock Stock and Snatch, and as far as I'm aware, they like them.

I thought "The Krays" and "The Long Good Friday" were quite good.

I really enjoyed Snatch, Lock Stock, and Layer Cake, but the best of the British gangster films Ive seen has got to be Gangster No. 1.

As well as the other ones listed above, all of which are great, could I possibly recommend a little known movie called Hard Men? To be perfectly honest it's one of those you'll either love or hate (I loved it), and even if you're not a fan of London/British gangster films it's still worth a look.

Unfortunately, British gangster films seem to be associated by many with one Guy Ritchie, an ultraoverrated dolt with thought patterns similar to those of his lunatic Kaballah-driven wife and an egomania approaching the level of Dave "Court Jester" Courtney. However, some truly fine gangland pictures did come out of London in the last few years - "Gangster No 1", for instance. Of the ones I've seen recently, I'm also partial to "Essex Boys" - even if the only actual truth in this "based on a true story" picture was a car with four bodies inside.

As an update to Out of the Past (aka Build My Gallows High), a phenomenal film noir of the 40s with Kirk Douglas and Robert Mitchum, I also recommend Jonathan Glazer's debut Sexy Beast (2000), starring Ben Kinsgley, far from his role as Ghandi, as a vicious London gangster who arrives in the Costa Del Sol to bring back a retired ex-gangster, played, somewhat against type (he's the mild one), Ray Winstone.

I'm sure MMTH will corroborate this recommendation.

Would The original "The Italian Job" Be classed as an English mob film?

would you call films like "green street hooligans" and "football factory" gangster films or just an excuse to fight other gangs if you get my point?!

Those films are just violent based and not quite mob films in the sense we use mob around here. To get technical and pedantic though mob could simply refer to a collective of people.

Slightly going off topic but sticking the themes of British films and violence... Has anyone ever seen Scum? I caught it a few months ago and thought it was excellent.
