Brian De Palma - 06/23/04 08:28 PM

I don't think De Palma gets enough recognition
Scorsese get's a lot of recognition, but I think De Palma is better
He is great at suspense scenes
I find his movies more exciting and better story to it
Scarface, Untouchables, Carlito's Way, Dressed to Kill, Snake Eyes, Mission Impossible

I like Scorsese as well, Taxi Driver is great, but I think De Palma is better

err no

Scorcese will beat De Palma every time in terms of directing capabilities. I dont think anyone can possibly in terms of direction compare scarface, carlitos way,and the untouchables(although all superb movies) with the likes of mean streets, taxi driver, raging bull, goodfellas, gangs of new york, to name but a few.

That by itself puts scorcese ahead of de palma every time, in my opinion.

I think De Palma is immensely overrated. Scarface was awful--I do plan on rewatching it before the weekend, incidentally, though. His best film is Casualties of War, and the casual Mission: Impossible close after--although granted, I haven't seen Carrie, or any of his earlier work.

Scorsese, on the other hand, is personally my favourite director, and for directorial vision, is possibly ranked among the all time greats. Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Goodfellas. All share similar themes, but it has worked time and time again for him--as a certain type of genre works well for certain authors.

Incidentally, Tarantino, on the 2-disc DVD of Pulp Fiction, on the Charlie Rose show interview, ranks both of these, along with Howard Hawks, in his top three most inspirational directors in his career.

I love Scarface but I do agree with Capo that DePalma is overrated. The part that I've seen of Blowout--one of Tarantino's favorites--seemed like a ripoff of Blowup, just without the social criticisms. The Untouchables is good but ultimately missable. Mission: Impossible is just an average action films.

Scorsese on the other hand is the best director to emerge in or since the 1970s. I don't think I need to even elaborate any further on that.

I'd say Godard, Melville, and Peckinpah inspired him a whole lot too...not to mention the countless Asian directors he references in his films.

IMHO i don't see De Palma as an overrated Director. i love his Scarface and Carlitos Way plus Mission Impossible. but for me Martin Scorsese is better. Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Casino(you forgot this Mick)as Capo mentioned. These are or some of this are soon to be Classic De Niro movies. All of those i mentioned are in my collection.

I agree with you when you say that De Palma doesn't get enough recognition, but I disagree that he is a better director than Martin Scorsese. Marty in my opinion is a better director, but they both make great movies. I do however feel that De Palma gets left out a lot with Marty, and Quentin, and Speilberg, etc.
