Taxi Driver or Raging Bull?

Taxi Driver or Raging Bull? - 12/31/02 08:49 AM

In which movie do you think De Niro gave a better performance? Everyone says Raging Bull was De Niro's best performance, and I always agreed... Until I saw Taxi Driver. As it says in the trailer, "You'll never see a more chilling performance." This is so true. His character is so pitiful, and knows very little about many things. Anyways, yeah, which do you think is his better performance? I went with Taxi Driver.

Oh, and I'm not asking about the better MOVIE, I'm asking which you think De Niro played his part better in, what his better performance was.

Re: Taxi Driver or Raging Bull? - 12/31/02 04:21 PM

I had to struggle with this one. I saw Taxi Driver first, so that performance has stuck with we a little more then Raging Bull. But his Jake La Motta is so incredible. I'm probably gonna regret it but I went with Taxi Driver, for the exact reason you mentioned, how pitiful he was. That one scene where he is trying to reach out to Wizard, "I got bad thoughts in my head." , is terrifying and pitiful at the same time. Truly amazing

Taxi Driver. Raging Bull was good and he had to gain 65 lbs. But Taxi Driver was a really phycotic performance and that was the first time he did one like that.

Also, the scene where Travis(De Niro) confronts Betsy... "Why don't you return my calls? You don't think I know you're here?" Sends chills up and down my spine. "You're in hell, and you're gonna die in hell... just like the rest of them." Seeing it makes me get tense... Such awesome acting.

"Raging Bull" for sure. The most intense performance by any American actor since Brando's in "Streetcar Named Desire."
Welcome back, Anthony!

Re: Taxi Driver or Raging Bull? - 12/31/02 10:33 PM

I had to go with Taxi Driver, De Niro did great in Raging Bull but how am I supposed to know if he did a great La Motta? I've seen a little bit of one of his fights on ESPN Classics fighting Sugar Ray but that's it. Taxi Driver he was a great psycho . But he gets shot in multiple places and still lives, I don't know about that one...

Re: Taxi Driver or Raging Bull? - 12/31/02 11:19 PM

It's not that unbelievable... Remember, the last half hour or so of the movie, he's training and getting all shaped up and everything. He does this to toughen himself up for the end, from the gun shot wounds, fights, ect.

Thanks for the welcome, Turnbull! I feel honored to be welcomed by you. :p *bows to the almighty Turnbull*

Don Vercetti, you are one of the "few lucky" ones who have found the Raging Bull DVD. Because they are releasing a new Special Edition Raging Bull DVD as part of a 5 movie dvd Scorsese Box set.

What others have been saying is that it is "out of print"...I see that you're taking it that they mean that there is no more to be found. What Turnbull and others are saying is that the studio has stopped printing that 1st edition DVD, and all the stores where I live have pulled it from their shelves (as a request from the movie studio) as they did with the Scarface DVDs. And most stores have also pulled it off. I say you are lucky because you found it recently. In fact, Scarface is unavailable but like you, Don Corpuzzi found one at a store a few months back.

I've searched mostly every website for Raging Bull and they're unavailable.

So for Raging Bull fans, don't worry as it will have the Special Edition treatment as will Goodfellas in the Scorsese Box set.

Re: Taxi Driver or Raging Bull? - 01/02/03 07:14 PM

I bought it a wile ago but i still see them in stores. I see them in several stores on DVD. I never saw it on VHS though.

Re: Taxi Driver or Raging Bull? - 01/02/03 07:16 PM

I voted for Raging Bull. From what I've read the valid reasons on why many of you choose Travis Bickle is also due to the terrific script by Paul Schrader. I know...I know...De Niro improvised many things...and he did give one hell of a performance.

The difference to me is that as Jake La Motta De Niro does a lot of it from him as the source, while what's most memorable about Travis is due to the character writing. Don't get me wrong, Raging Bull was also a great script. But, if you just look at it from an "acting" perspective such as Method acting, gestures, taking on the behavior and appearance of the character...Jake La Motta gets the edge by a tiny bit. And as Turnbull said, and I believe also, Brando in "Streetcar..." and De Niro in "Raging.." are the 2 most intense and best performances in film.

This is all moot anyway. It's just my opinion, and I highly respect all of your opinions also! No one is wrong here.

Thanks Puppeteer, thats exactly what I meant when I said I couldn't find it anywhere.

They are probably just being sold in your area by stores that are too stubborn to take them off the shelves.

Being that there is no real indication that a new version of Taxi Driver is coming out yet and since the current Taxi Driver DVD is actually pretty good, you many want to think that over.

Re: Taxi Driver or Raging Bull? - 01/04/03 09:44 PM

Yeah the DVD is great. There is a really nice Making Of piece and a lot of cool extras. It's very well done and the quality of the picture and sound isn't phenomenal but it is by no means sub-par. I rented the movie on VHS at my local video store and bought it. Fell in love, and rushed to Best Buy the next day. I was pleasantly surprised with the DVD quality. I'd recommend it.
Posted By: Anthony Lombardi

Re: Taxi Driver or Raging Bull? - 01/05/03 01:47 AM

The picture and sound isn't that great because it was a very low budget film. They didn't have much cash to work on. And, it's amazing how great it turned out because of that.

From DvdFile.com

In other Warner news, the studio has also begun work on extensive box sets celebrating the works of two of today's most critically and commercially successful filmmakers, Martin Scorsese and Barbra Streisand. The Scorsese collection will include five of the director's top Warner titles, including new special editions of Mean Streets, Goodfellas, After Hours and Who's Knocking at My Door?, while the Streisand set is slated to include such classics as Peter Bogdonavich's What's Up, Doc?, Up the Sandbox and the 1976 remake of Main Event. Both talents will be involved in their respective collections, and with production already underway, watch for more details to emerge next year. As always, stay tuned!

I know better than to start rumors. I read a link a few months ago about a Scorsese box set, but couldn't find it, and MobbingForMoney has just posted a link to the Scorsese news. Back then Raging Bull was slated to be in the box set, but news and plans do change. Sorry if I come off as defensive, but on a board w/ many Scorsese fans...I wouldn't be trying to mess with people, I thought that it wold be nice to spread the joy.
