I didn't like Casino

I didn't like Casino - 12/23/02 04:18 PM

To me, the film was like a caricature of mob movies. It was as if the studio had some sort of contract with Scorsese, De Niro, Pesci, etc. to make another mob movie to cash out. The narration was almost comical. Critically speaking, I don't think the movie was very good. I think the boys whored themselves out for a quick payday rehashing old times and familiar bits.

I thoought it was good, but didn't need to be so long. It did drag on at times.

I liked and it's one of my favorite movies. To each his own as always. I thought DeNiro gave a good performance and that the movie was good.

I liked Casino. I also read the book and found it interesting. The narration helped to explain many things in the novel. The book covered more than the movie and was different in some respects. Joe Pesci was excellent as Nicky Santoro.

It's one of my favourite films. Theres a strong cast and a strong script. From a female point of view it's nice to see 'Gingers' story, if you will. Not often in gangster movies do women have a strong part.
I think it's an excellent film, the fact it's based on true events is the icing

Oblong, I agree that "Casino" didn't have the intensity and pace of "Goodfellas" and "Mean Streets." But it offered something different--and good: a long, careful, detailed look at the casino industry and Mob involvement. It had a great cast (Pesci, Rickles, Smothers, Woods, Vincent), and DeNiro's best performance in years. And it had a great performance by Sharon Stone. All in all, I'd rate it somewhat, but not far, below "Mean Streets" and "Goodfellas."
"Quick payday?" At nearly 3 hours (too long, IMHO), it sure wasn't quick.

I love that movie, I saw it 16 times. It's based on a true story, just fictional characters. My Fav. scene is Joe Pesci's fate at the end.

Yes. I called a movie-fan pal after seeing "Casino" to alert him that, for once, Frank Vincent wound up on the right side of the baseball bat.

Re: I didn't like Casino - 12/25/02 08:54 PM

I just saw it a couple of days ago and I was really impressed. I expected a formula mob movie, basically a vehicle for Bobby and Pesci and Scorsese but I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was extremely origional. I loved the narration and the performances were out of this world. I expected it from De Niro and Pesci but Sharon Stone was really good, and added a nice twist to a familiar genre. The way they presented the interworkings of the casinos, and the mobs involvement was really fascinating, IMHO.

I also think it's a good movie. Plus like someone already said since it's based on a true story, that just makes it more interesting.

And I also preferred it over Goodfellas.

I liked Casino. Very good flick. Even though the 'Family' doesn't run Las Vegas today. The Kansas City 'Families' still has it's fingers in the Riverboat Casinos and dabbles in Reno and Atlantic City. We still make a fortune.

Casino was a great movie IMO. The only part that I did'nt like was the Ace's wife being with the pimp/boyfriend guy. It did'nt make to much sence to me..

In essence, I did not think Casino was truly a 'mob flick'. It was basically the life of Sam Rothstein, who was not a mafia figure, but who worked and hung around mafia guys. I truly enjoyed it.
I liked the parts where Sam constantly blamed Nicky (Tommy=Nicky, Pecsi, whats the difference?) and Ginger for all his problems. He had built-in escape goats.

Sam Rothstein isnt real. Hes based on Al Rothstein, who trained Frank Costello and Lucky Luciani in rackets. Rothstein is rumored to have fixed the World Series, which is dipicted in the movie "Eight Men Out".

Casino is a true story based on the Nicholas Pileggi book. The characters are real only the names have been changed. The real characters are:

1)Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal=Sam "Ace" Rothstein.
2)Anthony"Tony The Ant" Spilotro=Nicky Santoro.
3)Geri McGee=Ginger.

I enjoyed the film very much. It had everything everyone has said before me. I especially liked the theme that everyone has a weakness, no matter how slick or powerful a person is. Rothstein's weakness was Sharon Stone's character and her's, James Woods' guy, etc.
