gangs of new york - 11/19/02 06:33 AM

How excited is everyone about seeing Scorsese's new opus Gangs of New York? Personally, its my most anticipated movie ever, i'm expecting a great deal from this movie and am not in the least bit concerned about all the release delays. i think he his just fine tuning his little masterpiece with some reshoots and careful editing. apparently he has done it all before with Goodfellas, etc. & look how that turned out. Anyway, i can't wait.

I saw the trailer clip couple of days ago. It does not seem very exciting, that's maybe because they didn't make it exciting as the movie will be.

We will have to wait and see

ps. If u haven't seen the trailer, you can download it here;

Definately, that's why I'm gonna see it! When I 1st saw it, I didn't think it was gonna be all that, but when I saw that it was from the same guy who did Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino, I changed my mind pretty quickly & said the guy has paid his dues & knows what he's doing!

Martin Scorsese, is IMO the best Mob director ever and in Roger Ebert's opinion, the finest American filmmaker ever.

Lenardo DiCaprio is also the lead actor and unlike others, I am not automatically biased against him for his work on Titanic (very good movie btw). I have a strange feeling he'll give us an Oscar worthy performance.

Has anyone seen Scorsese's "King of Comedy"? It was a different side of Scorsese. I see where Ben Stiller got inspiration for "The Cable Guy".

King of Comedy is a great film. Another great Scorsese film is After Hours. No Mafia in either film but both are great film's.

Another great Scorsese film is The Color of Money. It wasn't too long ago when i found out that Martin Scorsese directed this film. Paul Newman won an Oscar for this film, and i think he deserved it. But Scorsese did a great job with this one. There's one scene that i like, where they're playing pool, and Scorsese is using different camera angles to get those several close-up shots of the cue ball and the rest of the nine balls. Excellent stuff. Do you all know which scene i'm talking about?

The Colour of Money is a fantastic film and I too had no idea Scorsese directed it - thanks Mardini. Yes I know what scene you mean. Another scene with unique and pioneering camera work by Scorsese would be in Mean Streets where the camera is fixed to Kietel (or could have been De Niro) as he walks around the club. I first saw this type of work a few years ago on some music video and was pleasantly surprised to see it used nearly 30 years ago.

Very looking forward to Gangs of New York for over a year now but I fear a let down and huge critical abuse. Prove me wrong Scorsese.

Have you ever seen "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore"?

Re: gangs of new york - 11/24/02 04:43 PM

Didn't see "Alice," but "Last Waltz" was another great film. "King of Comedy" was another fine effort. I'm surprised no one mentioned "Mean Streets," which is even better than "Goodfellas," imhop. The guy's a genius--look at the range of projects he tackles, with such success!

I can't wait. If it lives up to expectations, it should be one of the best American films of recent years.

The biggest release delay was because the original date would have put it up against The Road to Perdition, another similair movie. So instead they decided to stick it in the winter season, which in turn also gives it a better chance for an Oscar run. Scorcose also asked for a 100,000 dollar church to be made specifically for the movie and that slowed things down a bit as well. Your theory should be correct, none of the delays show that the movie has been delayed because of it's poor quality.

This is the reason I won't be seeing Gangs of new York. I can't stand Leonardo DiCaprio.

Just an FYI: I just saw Leo on an interview about Gangs of New York. He said that it was filmed entirely on location in Italy! I didn't know that. He said they had a set made to look like 1863 N.Y. He went on to say that the film is about the "origin" of gangs.

Been looking forward for this film for 2 odd years De Niro was supposed to do the Daniel Day Lewis part but didn't wanna be away from his family or summat, filming in Italy.

I seen the trailer and read shit about it. They say the fight scenes are class.
