I actually got the chance to see it a good few months ago and thought it was excellent. Let's hope that it's repeated for y'all.

I'll delete this thread soon (if that is the custom for something out of date) but I want to encourage the younger guys who didn't grow up watching black and white movies on TV to watch some of those old Bogart,Cagney, Raft,
Edward G.,East Side Kids, Bowery boys etc flix. I'm not being condescending because B and W movies can seem boring to someone that only watches color. Give the movies a half hour chance, I'm sure you'll get into them. Go for some mentioned on this board previously.

If this is the same Last Don, that had Cross and Dante in it, then I saw it on USA as a two part mini series a year ago, and it was pretty good. I thought it was just some sort of made for tv movie though, but Id buy it if I saw it

"White Heat" is a must see for any fan of films! Cagney is superb as Cody Jarrett, and the end of the movie ("top of the world, Ma!") is a blast

If you haven't already seen it, GO GET IT!!

"White Heat" is right in the top tier of gangster movies. One of Cagney's most forceful and dynamic performances, at a time when he was in his 50's, and was reluctant to play another gangster role. Plus you can see Steve Cochran in his Elvis Predecessor role.

Right on! Public Enemy wasn't bad either. And E.G. Robinson's Little Caesar. All classics!

Yes, indeed, Snake! But if you want to see Robinson at his absolute nastiest, try "Key Largo." Robinson makes his Little Caeser character look like a choirboy compared with his Johnny Rocco character in "Largo." Fine cast, too, including Bogie, Bacall and Lionel Barrymore.

I've often wondered what Johnny Rocco whispered in Bacall's ear that cost him that slap in the face.

No need to delete the topic in my eyes Bronx King. We may have diverted from the original topic at hand but this is a good film and this thread may give awareness to people who have never seen the film.

Love all those dudes (and Bacall, of course)! Thanks, Turnbull! I'll check it out!

What makes the Bacall/Robinson slap scene memorable to you and me, and keeps us wondering, is that we don't know what he said--but we can imagine the worst. It's made even more dramatic because the Johnny Rocco character is relatively well-spoken and has a patina of sophistication, but always has that crude violence lurking in the background. Nice touch! If it were a contemporary movie, someone like Joe Pesci would have spat out a string of vicious obscenities in her ear, and she would have told him to go f**k himself (and have gotten shot ?)

Well, that's one of the great things about those older movies, Fanucci--they leave some things to our imagination. [/b][/quote]That's the beauty of the older movies--perfect example--The Postman Always Rings Twice with John Garfield and Lana Turner. There was very little physical contact and almost no explicit violence, yet the sexual tension and nerve wracking suspense was extremely high. The Jack Nicholson/Jessica Lange version was very explicit but not 1/2 as good although Jack and Lange did well.
