Is The French Connection considered to be a Mob movie? If so that is a really good show. I will try to think of some more.

Some great black and white classics
Public Enemy (Cagney)
White Heat "Top of the world,Ma"
Angels with Dirty Faces
Each Dawn I Die
Anything with Bogart and Cagney that involve crime are FABULOUS even in black and white

I dug Little Caesar , too, with Edward G. Robinson. A little cheesy and old, but a classic!

Once Upon A Time In America is really good... So is The Death Collector, if that's even considered a Mafia/Gangster/Mob movie. Hrmph...

There is a movie called "Witness to the Mob" that I really liked but I think the rest of the world hated. I think Robert DeNiro had something to do with the making of it.

I know the "ONLY GODFATHER, GOODFELLAS, and UNTOUCHABLES ARE MOB MOVIES!!!11" crowd might not agree with me but I recommend:

Boondock Saints
Brother

Rent/buy these two, you'll thank me for it.

Okay, I thought of 2 more (though neither were that great, in my opinion): Billy Bathgate (Dutch Schultz's mob) and Sugar Time (which was really more about Sam Giancana's relationship with one of the Andrews sisters). I suppose technically they're mob/gangster related.

I forgot to recommend Mobsters.

The Outsiders is a mafia movie?

Re: Mafia Films-Please List some of your recomendations - 07/03/02 05:31 PM

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Miller's Crossing and the comedy/parody that is Prizzi's Honor with Nicholson.

No, The Outsiders is NOT a mafia movie, not even a gangster movie. It's about growing-up, brother relationship and juvenile deliquency and following your dream. A very beautiful and touching movie by Coppola.

Re: Mafia Films-Please List some of your recomendations - 07/03/02 05:42 PM

And from across the pond comes............ The Long Good Friday.
It does have a Mafia family in it, although they don't mention their name.

What about Miller's Crossing, Billy Bathgate (sorry just noticed it was mentioned) , also Once Upon A Time In America, I know it has been mentioned but this is a Classic, so it deserves another.

You've got me thinking now.... The Last Capone, not 100% on the title but it's about an illegitimate son of Al. Really crap, my brother saw the title and bought me it a few years ago.

Cotton Club.... a semi musical Mafia film.. it's actually quite good.

To those already mentioned, I'd add "Key Largo," with Edward G. Robinson; "Al Capone," with Rod Steiger, and "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" with Jason Robards Jr. and George Segal (look fast for Jack Nicholson).

How about Midnight Run? Not really about the Mafia, although Dennis Farina makes a great mobster. The whole cast is great: DeNiro, Charles Grodin, Yaphet Kotto, John Astin.

Yes, I thought "State of Grace" was very good, with an over-the-top performance by Gary Oldman. One of those films that gets better with each viewing.

Two brilliant, though very different, films. Glad you liked them, Scarface. Was "Honor Thy Father" on broadcast TV in the UK? It was a made-for-TV film here, and I don't think it was ever released in theaters.

Your right on that one Carstonio, Dennis Farina did an excellent job as a mobster, especially the scene when he got into the limo to tell "The Duke" 2 things.

Love the ending too ( don't want to spoil it for everyone)

Norman Stansfield: Bring me everyone.
Benny: What do you mean "everyone"?
Norman Stansfield: EVERYONE!
