All mob/gangster/mafia movies, to date... - 09/26/01 01:10 AM

I was working on a list of mob/gangster/mafia movies to date and this is what I came up with thus far:

The Godfather (1972)
The Godfather: Part II (1974)
The Godfather: Part III (1990)
Goodfellas (1990)
Casino (1995)
The Untouchables (1987)
Scarface (1983)
Analyze This (1999)
Carlito's Way (1993)
Once Upon a Time In America (1984)
Donnie Brasco (1997)
A Bronx Tale (1993)

I know those are just the good ones but I am wondering if I missed any noteworthy ones. It is really a pity that the only one without a DVD release date set or any plans for a DVD release is Once Upon A Time In America. I want to eventually get all those movies on DVD, but I have not seen Scarface, Once Upon A Time In America, and Carlito's Way (but I just got Carlito for my B-day on DVD, so i will be seeing it soon).

Also, I was thinking about making a possible webpage dedicated to all mob films in general, however the Godfather portion would not be able to compare to this site whatsoever

It's really a pity that Goodfellas has no special features, whatsoever. Casino doesn't have anythign good either. The Donnie Brasco special edition is very good though. Analyze This doesnt have anything good either to my recollection.

Anyway, I am sure you dont want to read all of my babbling so I will leave it at that.

OK Franky, here are a couple of Gangster-movies that I think are worth to be watched and are not on your list:

1] The Usual Suspects (Highly recommended)
2] Reservoir Dogs
3] Pulp Fiction
4] Bugsy
5] Hoffa
6] Bonnie and Clyde
7] Dick Tracy (I haven't seen it but it comes highly recommended starring Warren Beatty and Al Pacino)

8] Mobsters (1991) (I haven't seen it either)
9] Al (Scarface) Capone (this one was recommended to me but I never found it)
10] Things to do in Denver when you're dead.
11] The Conversation (not exactly mobster movie but very close)
12] Blow (new) (I really liked it)
13] Somebody mentioned Glengary Glenn Ross which I haven't seen.

I'll come back if I ever remember anything else.

Glengarry Glen Ross is an excellent film (I think i'm gonna watch it soon to help recover from hangover) but is not related to mob movies. Its a Real Estate film. Just a nitch Sonny, sorry.

Reservoir Dogs, I think of that as a heist/robbery film, same with Bonnie and Clyde, not much or anything to do with the mafia. Blow is drugs, not mafia or mob.

Ill give ya partial credit for Usual Suspects and Pulp Fiction... Hoffa too, but that one isnt very good from what I heard. Bugsy is a gangster type movie, but not very good in comparrison.

Yo Franky, check your subject before mocking my post, eh? You mentioned "GANGSTER" movies. That includes robbery, drugs, and anything where two criminals (or more) come together for a crime (depending on how one defines "gangster movies").

BTW, if Reservoir Dogs isn't a "Mafia" movie, how come Carlito's Way is? I agree the movie is a good "Gangster Movie", where does the "Mafia" come into it? Just because Big T was a member? The head of the gang in RGogs was supposedly a member too!!!!

As for your views on Hoffa and Bugsy, I can't argue with your taste. I found them good and respect your opinion of them. It's just that if someone asked me to make a list of some great movies, they pop to my mind.

As for your remark of "...give ya partial credit....", Jesus. Give me a fxxxxxx break.

Sorry, I suppose I should have been more specific and said something about Italian actors or characters in the films. All of the movies in my list with the exception of Carlito's Way and Scarface center around Italian characters. However, Carlito's Way and Scarface star Italian actors.

And Sonny, I didnt mean no disrespect, I was just saying the way I viewed those movies. I suppose you were looking more at gangster films whereas I was looking more particularly at mafia films.

When I get some time later on I will use the iMDB plot-keywords to further categorize the movies mentioned on this thread.

Well, "...Jesus he knows me, and he knows I'm right..." (Genesis). On a side note, how does it bother you? (not that I care or that I'd stop using it)
