Sylvester Stallone Set To Star In Taylor Sheridan & Terence Winter Drama Series ‘Kansas City’

EXCLUSIVE: Sylvester Stallone is moving into scripted television.

Deadline understands that the actor, whose Rocky won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1977, is in negotiations to star in and exec produce Kansas City, a drama series from Taylor Sheridan and Terence Winter for Paramount+.

It marks Stallone’s first major lead television series, having guested on a number of classic shows such as Police Story and Kojak back in the ’70s and more recently in series such as This Is Us.

Kansas City brings together Sheridan, who is fast becoming one of the most significant television creators in the business with series such as Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown and 1883, and Winter, The Sopranos writer and Boardwalk Empire creator.

Kansas City follows a New York City Italian mobster, played by Stallone, forced to relocate to the most unlikely of places—Kansas City, Missouri. Set in present day, legendary mobster Sal (Stallone) is faced with the startling task of reestablishing his Italian mafia family to the modernized, straight-shooting town of Kansas City. There, Sal encounters surprising and unsuspecting characters who follow him along his unconventional path to power.

Winter, Sheridan, Stallone and his Balboa Productions partner Braden Aftergood will serve as executive producers along with David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari of 101 Studios. Winter will also serve as showrunner, and a writers room is up and running.

Stallone remains one of the biggest Hollywood stars, having written and starred in Rocky and its sequels as well as the Rambo and Expendables franchises. The Expendables 4, which is due out next year, will be Stallone’s last in the franchise and in addition to The Suicide Squad, in which he played Nanaue/King Shark, he stars in superhero film Samaritan and Guardians of the Galaxy 3, which is set for a 2023 release.

Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios, said, “Taylor is a prolific creator because of the multi-dimensional characters he creates and the complex worlds he builds. To be able to have the legendary, transcendent Sylvester playing one of these characters is truly a privilege. And on top of that, we have Terence producing the project with us, who is responsible for some of the most captivating, deeply respected television shows in history. We are thrilled that ViacomCBS has partnered with us to help tell this story.”

Not sure how I feel about this. Two great writers setting up a somewhat unrealistic story in modern time with an actor who I can't really see portraying a wiseguy (I might be wrong, but he'll always be Rocky/Rambo for me).

We'll see!

Maybe he will be better then Frankie planting and then finding the bomb and presenting it to his boss.

Unlikely? Kansas City always had a strong Italian underworld !!

Kind of reminds me of Fargo season 4, but they just brought in more muscle form New York.

To those who would doubt the wisdom of casting Stallone as a Mob guy. I can only refer you to his brilliant, Academy Award caliber performance as Anthony "Snaps" Provolone in the groundbreaking.definitive, Mafia chronicle "Oscar" In fact, he played a bad guy so well,he was almost arrested for loitering in front of a camera.

If it is modern day it has to be surreal. I mean, any well known Mafia boss going anywhere would draw a ton of attention today. Bringing his crew to Kansas would be worse. On top of that, modernized Kansas is meant to mean what? Gay marriages, Starbucks every few blocks, hipsters everywhere, and everyone being filmed by surveillance cameras everywhere they go.

Stallone is always great as an underdog being pushed around or being outnumbered and fighting back. I don't think he can pull off a mob boss. I like him though, so I hope it does well.

they should have picked a western city with no mob history

this sounds like a serious version of "lilyhammer"

but at least van zandt settled in norway, where there is zero italian mob presence

News about the series, now titled “Tulsa King” with cast and more info on the plot:

https://deadline.com/2022/03/tulsa-...-stallone-paramount-plus-1234985490/amp/

EXCLUSIVE: Max Casella (The Tender Bar), Domenick Lombardozzi (The Irishman), Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire), and newcomer Jay Will (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) have been cast opposite lead Sylvester Stallone in Tulsa King (working title), Paramount+’s new series created by Yellowstone‘s Taylor Sheridan, with The Sopranos alum Terence Winter at the helm as executive producer, writer and showrunner.

Produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, Tulsa King follows New York mafia capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi (Stallone), who, as he’s released from prison after 25 years, is unceremoniously exiled by his boss to set up shop in Tulsa, OK. Realizing that his mob family might not have his best interests in mind, Dwight slowly builds a “crew” from a group of unlikely characters to help him establish a new criminal empire in a place that to him might as well be another planet.

Casella will play Armand Truisi, an ambitious criminal operating under the patronage of the Invernizzi family. Lombardozzi will play Charles “Chickie” Invernizzi, the underboss and de facto head of the Invernizzi crime family. Piazza will play Vince Antonacci, Chickie’s henchman. Will will play Tyson, a quick-witted and eagle-eyed college graduate who acts tougher than he actually is and longs for a life far from his roots.

Sounds interesting. Great cast.

But I 've never heard of any italian, let alone mob guy named "Dwight"...

Re: "Kansas City" mob series with Stallone coming soon - 05/22/22 03:31 PM

^ My thoughts exactly.
Most likely “Dwight” was born right after or during WW2 to a veteran father.
Stallone was born in 1946 so that makes sense. Also Taylor Sheridan commonly puts military references in his plots and characters.

You know what's funny is that I actually saw this movie, as a 14 year old at the theater. I have no clue why I would have. But I remember seeing it in a place that has long since been demolished and replaced by a parking lot and a giant grocery store. Hard to believe Stallone has magically a fuller head of hair than he did in 1991, lol.

At least this show sounds promising and they got some good Boardwalk Empire/Sopranos alums to co-star. Kind of weird how those guys get around. Only Lombardozzi wasn't in Sopranos, but the other two were in both.

Pilot episode reviewed by Michael Franzese

I agree with him. It feels more like a crime comedy by how ridiculous it is. I wasn't expecting The Sopranos 2.0 (although there were comedic elements in that serie too) but I wasn’t expecting Get Shorty either. Even the early meeting with his borgata was a bit off and over the top. I torrented it so at least I’m glad I didn’t spend money or start a subscription for it.

Same thing. i watched 6 episodes and i enjoyd it. You can feel the touch of Terence Winter.

My only issue is Stallone's pronunciation. he can be hard to understand for a non native English speaker like me. It's a miracle the guy is a world famous actor because his elocution has always been so poor. It's getting worse as he gets older.

Also, I like the idea of a NY family sending a capo to the countryside but it is never explained why they send him to Tulsa. It's like they chose it randomly. They have no contacts there nor any businesses. You don't know why he settles in Tulsa and not somewhere else.

I think that is esile, because cant whack or shelve him because did 25 years and dont flipped despite the fbi tried 6 times,I think that send him in nowhere between cowes and cowboy was enought.
For the rules, the motherfucker that ends with broken jaw for his lack of respect to a veteran stand up guy,he deserve to die not the opposite.
But hey is a tv serie.

Re: "Kansas City" mob series with Stallone coming soon - 01/10/23 06:09 PM

They sent him to Tulsa specifically because there is absolutely no Family doing business there. They didn't want him cutting into their action or giving him back whatever rackets he was involved in in NY so they banished him to OK. Clearly none of those people had any loyalty to him or "This Thing of Ours". It was This Thing of Mine. Probably pretty accurate for today.

I thought the show was pretty good for what it was. If you're expecting Sopranos 2.0, you're going to be disappointed.

It's a good show, somewhat inspired by the Sopranos, Justified and Lillyhammer.

I feel like it received a good coverage and some decent critics so it could go on for a few seasons.

It’s something to watch. Not sure about its authenticity but I don’t expect tv shows to be documentaries…
