Chicago Outfit Book Recommendations? - 07/18/13 10:44 PM

Thanks again for the great Philly book recommendations I got here. Now though I looking for some good books on the Chicago Outfit. Anything authoritative out there with an emphasis on Ricca and Accardo?

Accardo: The Genuine Godfather by William F. Roemer Jr is the best book I've read on The Outfit..

ACCARDO by Bill Roemer - Great book. Overloaded with facts and info especially on Tony Accardo obviously but also the Outfits early days with him being Capone's bodyguard and his rise up the ranks

Family Secrets by ? - Another really good Outfit book, about the Calabrese family. Murders and bodies all over the place in this one, which I love.

The Don - About Sam Giancana, yet another really good Outfit book.

I recommend all 3 of these

I just got around to getting the Accardo book and it is indeed excellent. Really had no idea of what a genius Accardo really was to able to put and keep something that big going.

To fill in the missing information from above...

"Operation Family Secrets" by Frank Calabrese, Jr. with Keith and Kent Zimmerman and Paul Pompian.

Also recommended, mostly because they'll give you excellent insight into the operations of the Chicago mob during the Accardo era...

"Captive City" by Ovid Demaris. Published in 1969, it is a great snapshot of the Chicago outfit and Chicago politics at that instant in time.

"When Corruption Was King: How I Helped the Mob Rule Chicago, Then Brought the Outfit Down" by Robert Cooley with Hillel Levin.

"Casino" by Nicholas Pileggi.

"The Outfit" by Guss Russo.

I know that Turnbull has recommended another Ovid Demaris book, "Green Felt Jungle," about the inner workings of the mob and Las Vegas...and that's on my reading list for my next trip to the Elmwood Park library.

"Pay, Quit, or Die" and "The Chicago Way" by Don Herion

"The Chicago Outfit" by John Binder has some great photographs

"A Mob of His Own" is a great read concerning Sam DeStefano and the juice rackets in Chicago

"Double Cross" about Sam Giancana, which has some good information in it but also contains some tall tales and wild conjectures. The book was written by Mooney's brother, Chuck.
