Greatest Gangster Film in 2000s - 01/07/09 03:02 PM

What do you think has been the greatest gangster film since the new millennium?

Mine is probably The Departed. It had it all - great storyline, great director and the best actor in the past 10-15 years in Leonardo Di Caprio.

The Departed, who has seen "This Thing of Ours"???
Was that any good?

Re: Greatest Gangster Film in 2000s - 02/25/09 03:48 AM

This Thing of Ours is another one of those modern made mob movies - not too good. They don't make them like Goodfellas anyone.

The Departed or American Gangster. Both good flicks, gotta agree with lompac tho, nothing close to a goodfellas type movie.

I need to see Eastern Promises. But my vote would be a toss up between Road to Perdition and City of God.

It's a very good film. Violent.

Heard Vigo talk about how he left his Russian tattoos on after a day of shooting and he scared some people at a bar when they saw his hands and stuff.

I'd have to agree with the Departed. Road to perdition is a very stylish and well shot film too. Out of all these films mentioned, City of God is probably the best, in my opinion, but I'm not sure that I would classify it as a gangster film?

Hopefully Public Enemies will be good enough to put itself amongst these films soon!

Unfortunately theres been nothing to touch Goodfellas, Mean Streets, Godfather etc in my opinion. I would probably pick The Departed though.

I've not heard of this until now, thanks for the suggestion Capo. I'm adding it to NetFlix*.

I know the topic is greatest "film", but maybe the telvision series The Wire should be in this discussion?

As far as The Departed. I know I'll step on some toes here, but I thought it was horrible. I love what Scorsese has done with his career, but The Departed and Gangs of New York make me think he has lost his touch and now falls into the typical Hollywood garbage genre.

*EDIT: Just saw it's not on DVD yet, but I saved it and will watch it when it's available.
