A Bugsy (the movie) question - 01/05/09 04:50 PM

I haven't seen the flick for a long time, but a scene has me wondering...correct me if my memory of it is faulty...at one point in the movie Siegel is in a meeting in New York, and Joe Adonis (who I believe was Virginia Hill's previous lover) makes disparaging remarks about her. In a rage, Siegel beats the crap out of him.
If I've accurately described this scene in the movie, I have to ask: was this based on anything that actually happened? I mean, Doto wasn't just some punk. Unless Siegel was well protected as a potentially big money maker out west, it seem like beating up Adonis would be a good way to get hurt yourself.

They both "dated" Virginia Hill in real life, but I'm not sure that Siegel actually punched out Adonis.

And Dean Jennings, author of the Siegel bio, "We Only Kill Each Other," makes no mention of fisticuffs twixt Bugsy and Adonis. It's one of the many, many embellishments the producers of "Bugsy" added to make the film more entertaining (and it is--it's one of those films that gets better each time I see it).

Everybody who was anybody in the Chicago Outfit or NY Families had "dated" Virginia Hill at some point. While I don't doubt that Benny would have been crazy enough to assault Adonis, I never heard anything like that happening. It's just a myth.

The only thing I remember reading about that situation was that when all the "boys" came to see Luciano off at his deportation to Italy, Adonis was a little miffed and nervous to see his former flame, Hill with her new man, Siegel.

I truly believe that Doto would have been protected by the Commission, if Bugsy had hit him, it would be bye bye for Bugsy.

Also, that mythical fight shows up in the book Ride a Tiger by Harold Livingstone in which a Adonis like character makes an incredibly crude comment to the girlfriend of the fictionalized Siegel.

I knew Virginia was gonna be trouble. She sleeps around with powerful men and when she was with Bugsy, he gave her many thousands of dollars to put into Swiss bank accounts and she ran with the money. Kinda like Ginger in Casino. Women who like men and money are always trouble.
