2006 Concerts

2006 Concerts - 07/20/06 06:22 PM

So, who are we all seeing this Summer?

I'm pretty exhausted seeing 3 shows in less than a week, but would have it no other way!

Sat 7/15 - Dramarama & Sponge (with other bands all afternoon long) - I love Dramarama ("Anything, Anything", "Work for Food") and see them practically every summer at a club that's half opened up to the beach so everyone's scantily dressed. Always a great time! Only stayed for 2 Sponge songs, luckily they played one of their hits first -- I think it was "Plowed (Say A Prayer for Me)"

Sun 7/16 - Paul Simon - One of my favorite singer/songwriters, and the third time I've seen him. Once was the first Simon & Garfunkel reunion (1993) and the other his concert in Central Park (1991). Great as always, but didn't compare to the previous times I've seen him.

Wed 7/19 - Bon Jovi - Just to make Bethie jealous. :p I'm a sucker for his pop/rock music, and he has a great band. They played for over two hours last night, probably because the night before was shortened due to rain/lightning. Nickelback opened, but we only caught the last 2 songs since we were tailgating. One of the few concerts I've seen with 50,000 some-odd people at Giants Stadium (incl. the 1992 Guns 'n Roses / Metallica tour, and I think Elton John at one point).

Still to come...

Wed 8/2 - Soul Asylum - In a small club on the shore. Ex-Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson should be back in time for this show (he's currently, and oddly, also bassist for what they are calling Guns 'n Roses these days)

Thu 8/31 - Violent Femmes - Loved them since my college days and couldn't pass this up. At the same club as Soul Asylum.

...and hopefully more!

Sat 8/19 - Dave Matthews Band - I think this will be my 7th time seeing them live. I've seen them every summer now for the past 5 years I think, which is always the highlight of my summer.

Of course at the time I had never heard of them, but I stuck around for the filming anyway.

Re: 2006 Concerts - 07/20/06 07:50 PM

Is that the video they shot on that little stage on the boardwalk in Seaside? I heard about it after they did it, but didn't know who they were at the time either... but that platform is still there I believe. I think that was for "Runaway"...

They're touring together this year!?

Axl hates Grohl and Cobain if opinions haven't changed since the 90's.

But eh, I can't get excited for Guns N Roses. Without Slash it's hardly decent, and considering Axl is completely burned out it's even worse. All he can do today is make fun of Velvet Revolver while he sits on his ass.

Re: 2006 Concerts - 07/20/06 08:31 PM

That was the video, but I'm not sure if the song was "Runaway" or "In and out of love". They filmed the first half in the afternoon, then announced that they'd be back after dark to film the 'performance part' on the stage. I never heard of them before, but my girlfriend at the time liked them.

Don Sicilia will be on his honeymoon this summer so I'm taking a wild guess that he'll see Bare Naked Lady(s).

JG, where was Paul Simon? I saw Paul and Artie twice. 1969 and 1971, Forest Hills Tennis Stadium. PS is one of my favorites.

Did anyone catch my act at CollinsFest this year? A good time was had by all.

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band

Three times this summer.
-June 8th: Read my review from before.
-Aug 5th: Chicago
-Sept 12th: Good seats in Detroit for this one!

Bob Dylan

-Aug 12th: Gonna be there for the first show of his new tour for Moder Times. Hopefully will get good seats with the early entry.

Neil Young and CSN

-Aug 31st: 11th row at the Palace of Auburn Hills!! Gonna be awesome. His encore he is currently doing is Rockin' in the Free World. At the 7/13 show it was reported he passed out after a 4 min solo and jumped right back up to complete the song!

1964 the Tribute

-Date:? I see them as often as possible. BEST BEATLES TRIBUTE BAND EVER!

Lots of money spent. But I will have seen my 4 idols before I die (or, more importantly, they die) Paul McCartney, Neil YOung, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Buffett. Too bad Warren Zevon is already dead....

He was at the PNC Arts Center (Holmdel, NJ). I haven't decided yet whether to go there for Roger Waters and/or The Who. (JL, that's where the O&A Virus tour stops also - but no one will go with me! )

How did you like the Paul Simon concert Geoff? Did he sing a good variety of songs?

Gosh, I would love to see him in concert. I saw the one years ago at Madison Square Gardens(or was it Central Park?)...on tv. Does that count? :p

There's quite a difference between MSG (~20,000) and Central Park (~500,000)! But yeah - he's a favorite of mine, so anywhere somewhat close and I'll go (if the price is reasonable - and since I saw S&G's first reunion, no, the latest reunion wasn't "reasonable" to me... )

But yeah, he plays songs from Day 1 'til now, so, something for everyone!

Hmm, never heard of them - but I love Beatles tribute bands, and have seen a few in my day. Including Beatlemania's touring group, at least twice - and even roadied for them on the spot after one of their gigs. Beatle Magic is another I can think of right now, yet there are a couple others I've seen that were pretty good as well....

Tickets are still available. There are no $39 reserved seats left. Only $65 reserved, and $33 lawn seats. I'll be sitting in the $65 seats because I'm a fancy man. ...Seriously, if you go, let me know. I'll tell you where I'm sitting. There is going to be "Pest Tailgating" before the show, but I'm bringing my girlfriend so I'll have to skip that.

Re: 2006 Concerts - 07/21/06 06:07 AM

First off, leave the G/F home and enjoy yourself for once :p

Secondly, at PNC I always get Lawn cuz you can do whatever you want (walk around, drink, smoke, whatever ) and not worry about who's sitting next to you, and being all "polite" and shit. And most of the time, I can find just as good a view as someone who paid twice as much for their shitty seats -- so it's infinitely cheaper.

But definitely - if I go I'll let you know!

Re: 2006 Concerts - 07/21/06 06:10 AM

Hmm... come to think of it, tho... the lawn is probably not a good place to check out a comedy show.

Let me know when you're done being whipped and shit. :p

Re: 2006 Concerts - 07/21/06 06:40 AM

...Hey, I was on the PNC website and it says:"NO alcoholic beverages, smoking, bottles, cans, coolers, weapons." Do they allow this stuff on the lawn? (besides the weapons)

Re: 2006 Concerts - 07/21/06 06:48 AM

1) I'm SO tempted to call in tomorrow and tell The Boys all about your Whipped Status. :p

2) Please, as I said, there's a reason why I actually PREFER the lawn! Yeah, all of the above (except for coolers - that's for the parking lot), ...and then some!

The more I think about it, the lawn is like the Yanks' "Bleacher Creachers" section...

Re: 2006 Concerts - 07/21/06 06:54 AM

My G/F is a Saint. She teaches Special Ed. on Staten Island. That's probably the only reason she has the patience to put up with me. She's even letting me go to Aruba in October without her. ...Of course it's costing me a trip to Vegas with her in August.
Posted By: J Geoff

Re: 2006 Concerts - 07/21/06 07:01 AM

Actually, anyone who teaches Special Ed is a good person. I'd do it myself if I didn't have to go back to school for it..!

But still........ :p

Oh, but Aruba and Vegas, you poooooooooor guy! How can you stand all that????
Posted By: Just Lou

Re: 2006 Concerts - 07/21/06 07:08 AM

Yeah, poor me. She can't get the week off to go to Aruba with me in October. Since she gave me her blessing to go withour her, I told her I'd take her to Vegas. We just got back from Florida last week too. She's a good egg. We haven't even had a fight in the 14 months we've been dating

gonna grab some afternoon delight.

Is G N R finally touring behind a new album or just going out on the road. Their last tour a few years ago was cancelled due to horrible attendance. What a waste for what was a great band.

BTW - Just Lou - AWESOME avatar. I love that guy - he is hilarious and I'm so glad to hear him on the radio again.
