Nirvana is one of my favorite bands. My favorite song varies from day to day, but my favorite album of theirs is definitely In Utero.

I highly recommend them to anybody.

Re: Nirvana - 05/21/06 02:49 AM

One of the best bands of the last 25 years and most probably of all time. For me, right up there with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Bob Dylan and Pearl Jam. Dave Grohl formed Foo Fighters after Cobain's death and FF is one of the greatest too. If you like good music, listen to Nirvana.

Whats Krist Novolesic doing now?

Re: Nirvana - 05/21/06 10:46 PM

I absolutely love Nirvana. it was thee one band that changed my life. I got interested in rock'n'roll, indie rock and punk rock and found other bands that maybe I love even more, but Nirvana was definitely where it all started. like millions out there, I just fell in love with "Smells like teen spirit", then the whole Nevermind album, which is to me, their greatest album and an absolute masterpiece. I always felt that it is underrated because of all the hype. it's almost imposible for me to name a favorite song.

I always loved Nevermind's "Lounge Act" in a special way. the 5 first songs from Bleach are absolutely amazing. stunning. "About a girl" is one of the best songs ever written, and "Floyd the Barber" is among my favorites too. I also really like the guitar attack on "Love Buzz". the whole Nevermind album is great, as well as most of Incesticide and In Utero. "Molly's Lips", "Son of a gun" and "Serve the servants" are others among my favorite songs. the whole Unplugged in New York album is just an act of geniality, one of the best things ever known on earth.

as for Krist Novoselic, I'd also like to hear about him.

I want to say he is involved in politics now.

Although, I think Vercetti could probably provided much more insight than I.

Re: Nirvana - 05/21/06 11:01 PM

Krist Novoselic created the Joint Artists and Musicians Political Action Committee. He also in a few failed band projects like Sweet 75, No WTO Combo, and Eyes Adrift.

He went into politics and wrote this book. He looks worse on the old blue cover.

Re: Nirvana - 05/21/06 11:18 PM

I had never seen this. bizarre!

No WTO Combo played only one show (with Jello Biafra singing) the WTO stands for World Trade Organization and they played and released a live record in an event against WTO so when you call it a "failed band project" I think you're being pretty tough with him
Posted By: Don Vercetti

Re: Nirvana - 05/21/06 11:42 PM

Not really, considering none of the projects took off well at all.

Not to trivialize his feelings but I feel like there are certain things that people hate just because it seems everyone else likes them. I'm guilty of it myself sometimes.

I just don't think that marginally talented, pseudo-hardcore, failed 'punks' are cool; and neither are junkies. But then again, you've probably never heard of the hardcore band Scream who Nirvana were mainly influenced by, so that makes this discussion kind of useless. Nirvana was shock-value, for the sake of shock-value (in an era where the mainstream was devoid of it), their attacks on religion have been done by punk bands, in a much more tasteful, and logical way, i might add, for about 30 years now. I could shove a needle up my arm, have that be my entire personality, and write shitty songs.

I'd much rather listen to Motley Crue.

Nirvana Rocks! Should be the end of the story. But there must always be detractors and those who are not fans. There are those who don't care for The Beatles either. But the music really just speaks for itself. No need to defend Nirvana, just pop in Nevermind, In Utero, Bleach or whatever and you should see what us fans are talking about.

Saying an opinion is one thing DVC, just coming in with "Blah sucks" is different.

But then again, you've probably never heard of the hardcore band Scream who Nirvana were mainly influenced by

I love how you assume that not only have I not heard of Scream, but that I don't possibly listen to them, though I think their biggest influences were The Sex Pistols, The Melvins, Black Flag, Mudhoney, Black Sabbath, etc.

I find it amazing how you dismiss Cobain as a junkie and then say you'd rather hear Motley Crue. I also fail to see how Nirvana is only shock value. I can't even fathom it. Marilyn Manson, that's shock value, but Nirvana?

The way you describe Nirvana sounds like Blink 182 as far as pseudo-punk shock rockers go.

Nirvana in my opinion is a great band that didn't belong in the mainstream, but got sucked into it because of people who heard catchy riffs and nothing else.

Why should influences, personality and such factor in to if you like a band or not? For me, any music that's pleasing to my ears is good.

i used to be a major hip-hop fan but started to broaden my horizons and listen to other kinds of music. i can definetly understand the popularity its great music, with a way different message than hip-hop sends

Tony check out Olho Seco from SP (if you haven't heard them) they were around in the early 80's, and in my opinion are one of the best punk bands ever, definitely the best Brazilian [if not South American] punk band ever (without them Brazil would have no punk).

yes I know exactly what you mean. I'm not that big of a fan (I haven't heard that many stuff of them too) but I know about their influence around here. although, there are a few local punk rock bands that I like more - Forgotten Boys, Tequila Baby... are you into them? Tequila Baby has been playing with Marky Ramone everywhere (I've seen them live myself) for years so I figured if anyone outside Brazil knows them.

I actually have only heard of vaguely, but if you like punk rock, once you listen to Olho Seco (esp. being from Brazil) you will fall in love. Only a few bands worldwide captured it and they certainly did. I would have loved to have seen them (Olho Seco - LOVE them). I can't recommend them strongly enough. Intro to "Havera Futuro":

(spoken)
"Havera futuro pa' pobreza desse pais?
Voce' passa no meio da rua so ve' a pobreza
com as maos estendidas, sempre a palma...voltada pro alto pedindo esmola, havera futuro pr'esse pessoal?"
Havera futuro?

The anger, sincerity, and despair are beautifully tangible, and augmented due to the low quality of their rare available recording, but in my opinion it only adds to the magic.

"HOUVE PASSADO! HAVERA FUTURO!"

Download them and get back to me, bro.

Re: Nirvana - 05/26/06 07:08 PM

Kurt Cobain is diffently one of the best songwriters ever
Posted By: Don Jasani

Re: Nirvana - 05/26/06 09:11 PM

The whole band (Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic) were extremely talented. Obviously Cobain stood out as a genius because of his stage presence, his lyrics and his brutal honesty. The best band of the 90s and probably the best band of the last 25 years.

I see flashes of the same genius Cobain had in Grohl and Foo Fighters. Grohl is extremely talented and Foo Fighters along with Green Day and The Red Hot Chili Peppers is the best band at the moment. Can't forget U2 also...
