Please vote ONLY if you are attending. Thanks.

Sheesh. What a production.

I voted for the Italian place, but that's only if we're gonna go check out the Mosholu and have drinks or something after dinner.

Otherwise, since the hotel is downtown and there are plenty of good restaurants around there, what's the point of all of us going down to the Penn's Landing area for dinner?

Believe me, it's nothing special.

Ok, first let me say I don't care where we eat, (although I'm not willing to give up my arm or leg, let alone my firstborn :p ), but I went with the Italian restaurant because, well, because.....there ain't nothing like Italian!!!

Really, doesn't matter.

And this is EXACTLY why it is a production!

I happen to agree with you about Going to the Moshulu. And I happen to agree with you that there are probably a lot of good places near the hotel. If you know of them why haven't you posted them? I think that you happen to have very good taste in restaurants and food, and if you recommend something, that's good enough for me.

But up until this point only Geoff, SB and I have recommended and researcehed some places. And you just post nay, no and geez! So stop the whining and make some suggestions, will ya? :p

TIS,TIS, what have i ever done to make you treat me so disrepectfully? You came to Chicago in friendship, and those cute little blue drinks have been flowing ever since. And that by chance if an honest woman such as yourself should make enemies, then they would become my enemies. And then they would fear you. But to imply that I cannot sit on the same side of the table with you because I am not a liberal?

I understand. You found paradise in the liberal party, had a good trade, made a good living. The police protected you; and there were courts of law. And you didn't need a republican friend like me. But uh, now you come to the boards and you say -- "Don Cardi give me justice, let Patrick sit on my side of the table." -- But you don't ask
with respect. You don't offer friendship. You don't even think to call me Godfather or Santino. Instead, you come into these boards today, and you uh ask me to do this.

Don Cardi...can you imagine if any of these dinners had a liberal/conservative division?

You & I (and maybe a few others) would be sitting at the '
'kiddie' table or the little one in the back near the kitchen.

Luckily, as you have reminded more than once (and which I hope is still true)...political discussions are forbidden at Gangster BB dinners!

Yes it’s true. If anyone would say such a thing, they would not be a friend. They would be a dog.

A refusal of staying away from politics that weekend is not the act of a friend.

NO! No politics. The talking of Politics when we get together as a family would be an infamia!

You just saved DMC a ton of money Pat! He owes you big time. It's GangsterBB tradition that when we get together, the youngest usually buys the drinks for everyone that night. And the way that this crew drinks, you'd better start saving now!

You can't bring booze into the hotel Pat. You have to buy the booze from their bar. Same with the restaurants. So you have to give in to the fact that if you want to hang out with this crew and be a part of it, then you have to step up and fullfil your obligations as the newbie. It's like when a guy becomes a member of a mob family. The first dinner after his being brought into the crew is on him. That's just the way that it is my friend.

DMC, if Pat doesn't come, then you are the one!

BTW Pat, Cubans are illegal.

Plaws the one who introduced this tradition.

The first time I wwnt out with Plaw, SC and Consigliere's lady, I was the youngest male so I picked up the bar tab.

The next time we went out it was Plaw, SC, Consilgiere's lady, Turnbull, Geoff, Mikey Montana and Don Smitty. And Don Smitty had to pick up the bar tab. Now it's your turn. No special treatment because of your age.

I really don't care where we end up for dinner either night. I'm okay just winging it. As far as I'm concerned a hamburger joint is ok with me too. Ok, not a McDonald's or anything, but a casual little "getting to know you" type place where we can kickback, talk, laugh, etc. Just a thought.

I think that the reason that we talked about Saturday night is so that EVERYONE will be together, we can ALL have dinner together and then go to The Moshulu together. Some aren't coming until Saturday.

I'm not even going to touch Friday night. Someone else can take care of that one.

I called the Hotel earlier tonight and asked them to fax me a copy of their restaurant menu since I didn't see it on the web site. It hasn't come in yet. I'll call back tomorrow.

Like TIS said, it doesn't really matter (Shula's) where we eat (Shula's), as long as we're all together (Shula's). What matters the most to me (Shula's) is that we get to kick back (Shula's) and relax (Shula's), have time to reconnect (Shula's) with those we haven't seen in a long time (Shula's), get to know those we haven't met before (Shula's). That's FAR more important (Shula's) to me than what kind of food (Shula's) we have, or where we sit down (Shula's). It's all about the people!!!

Last time we were in Philly we ate in a great little Italian place that was walking distance from where we'll be staying - no more than 10-12 blocks or so, anyway - which was authentic and "homey", had really good food with big portions, and was relatively inexpensive.

(Kind of like the difference food and price-wise between the original "Carolina" in Brooklyn "Tommassos", DC, just to give you an idea).

Trouble is, I forgot the name of the place .

Lemme do some investigating and get back to you.

Yes, majority may be dictating in this vote, however if we go by the democratic process, then the electorial process will decide where we have dinner.

They have Shula's all over the country.

If we want to go there we can go to the one in Manhattan, which is about 5 minutes from the Lincoln Tunnel.

If we're gonna travel an hour and a half and 100 miles to visit another city, isn't it more fun to eat in a restaurant that's unique to that particular place?

THAT is hysterical and furthermore, I agree!

So here's Gangser BB electoral process:

DON JGeoff's vote is worth 30 electoral votes

CONSIGLIERI DC's/SC's/Plaw's vote is each worth 20 electoral votes (although I don't even know if SC has voted yet)

All other MALE votes worth 10 electoral votes.

All FEMALE votes worth 35 electoral (5 more than The Don!)

So, everyone publicly state your preferences so we can do the math and decide this as a Democracy!!

You know what? No one has the right to tell anyone else where they should or shouldn't eat. And no one has the right to remark about how someone else voted or what they voted on.

We are trying to decide in the fairest manner so that we can all have dinner together.

Geez.... what a grouch!! (Who do you think you are?? Me???)

I say we let plaw decide where we eat. His past track record (of picking places) has been good. Plus, if he picks a bad place this time we can all blame the old windbag.

On a more serious note - it doesn't look like The Mosholu will be picked, and assuming it isn't, we should go there BEFORE dinner. My thinking is we'd have a better photo op there while its still light out (to say nothing of having a few drinks before dinner).

I wasn't going to say it, but I wasn't sure of my & my daughter's desire (or ability) to trek somewhere for drinks AFTER what promises to be a rousing dinner which is bound to last several hours. Re: 8/19/06 Saturday Evening Dinner - 04/19/06 05:44 PM

Goodness, gracious, we're all getting our panties in a wad, aren't we?? Can I remind everyone that this is supposed to be a FUN weekend??? To quote my daughter: It's easy to be you - just suck the fun out of everything, you fun-sucker!!

I think that we have to keep in mind that we are dealing with different people from all over the country who are all used to eating or ordering different kinds of food. Also, I personally haven't been to Philadelphia since I was in middle school. The reason that Shula's was mentioned was because, when we were discussing hotels, I mentioned that my husband had recently stayed at the Wyndham in Philly and greatly enjoyed both the hotel and Shula's. At that point, SC mentioned that he had enjoyed eating at a Shula's, as had others, and that's where it all began. I thought that seemed a good starting point as a place that could make people happy, due to its consistency and the type of food that they serve.

As for where we eat, as much as "winging it" might seem like a good idea, for a party as large as ours will be, that would be completely impractical. We need reservations. So, let's see what the tally is by the end of this vote (Shula's) and where we end up (Shula's) and that will be the end of that (Shula's).

And, Apple, as women who have been trod upon for centuries and treated as an underclass by men since our very existence, I think that we should get WAY more electoral votes, don't you?

With this second thread dealing with the Philly weekend and its 137 posts in just more than a day, I've been having a little trouble following all of it I guess.

SB and Patrick....Assuming that we all still want to eat together when this discussion is over, don't you think it would be more fun to eat in a restauarnt that imparts a bit of the local color flavor of the city that we're visiting, rather than a chain like Shula's?

Meanwhile, I made a few calls to some people to help me figure out the place that I mentioned before where I ate the last time I was there.

But the issue remains:

If we are gonna go see and/or visit the Mosholu either before or after dinner, then we probably should find a restaurant in the Penn's Landing area which is near the ship.

In which case the Italian place that was in the poll sounds OK to me.

I'll get back to y'all.

What the hell happened here?

Sheesh.

We could act like wo/men! *slap!* Whatsa matta wit us!

Here are the facts:

  • We're staying in Center City, Philly
  • We're visiting Penns Landing Saturday afternoon to walk around, and see the Mushula and perhaps have a drink and/or a snack there
  • We can eat somewhere in Penns Landing -OR- go back to Center City afterwards, it makes no difference
  • We WILL stop fighting!
  • We will strongly consider listening to those, including myself, who make perfect sense when they say that we should take advantage of our location by eating in places unique and special to that area
  • That is, we will ignore DS & SB.
  • However, we WILL have a GREAT time, regardless! :p Burger King, anyone??

PL, if you bothered to read my post, you would know my reasons for thinking of Shula's as a viable alternative. Plaw - I really don't care where we eat. I was just saying Shula's so everyone knew that I voted for it.

A few more places you guys might want to check out in Philly if you get bored:
Condom Kingdom
Johnny Rocket's -- It's open til 2 or 3 AM and their burgers are fantastic.

There are also a number of family owned shops up and down South Street, bars, and restaurants. There's a Fat Tuesday's as well.

And if you really get bored and want to head out of the city for part of the day, King of Prussia is just 15 minutes down the road from Center City.

Ok, here's my suggestion. We go down to Penn's Landing aroun 4:30/5:00, walk around, take photos by the Mosholu, have some drinks there, maybe even a few appetizers, then cab it back to a restaurant near the hotel for a 7:30 reservation, and then be within stumbling distance of the hotel and its lounge. This way, Apple and Don Cardi, who I believe will have their children with them, can get back to the hotel at a decent hour, and we can all be nearby for a nightcap. Thoughts, anyone??

Unless something unforseen comes up, I am NOT bringing my children with me that weekend. And even if I did I wouldn't expect the group to base their plans around me and my children. But that was extremely sweet of you SB, and I thank you for thinking of me and my family.

Re: 8/19/06 Saturday Evening Dinner - 05/17/06 06:53 PM

I was thinking about the BB Weekend in August and thought that I'd do some research. So I called La Veranda & Shula's to find out if they could accommodate us or not and this is what they told me:

La Veranda -

They are able to accommodate us and they will give us a private room.

They only need 2 weeks notice for a reservation.

They will let us choose from 'prefixed' menu's. For the list of menu's go here La Veranda Click on the banquet link and look at the

Family Style Menu
Party Menu A
Party Menu B
Party Menu C
Party Menu D

I will post what I found out about Shula's later on today. Got some stuff to do. We really need to decide where we are going on Friday and Saturday night cuz we only have 3 months to go and Summer vacations are coming up and I know I will be on and off the BB all Summer others might be also. Thanks

Re: 8/19/06 Saturday Evening Dinner - 05/17/06 09:17 PM

Look I don't even need to see anymore menu's, whatever is cheapest is ok with me because it looks like the food is good and there's a decent variety even in P-Menu A.

To Mignon....you are right to want to get this tightened up and due to the amount of people in our party something should be pre-planned reservation wise, so my suggestion to you is to extract a final restaurant decision for both nights and then decide on the menu.

I mean, don't get me wrong it's nice to get everyone's input...but there comes a time when somebody has to start making decisions. After all, it's only food, we KNOW it's good food, and the point again is that we'll all be hanging out together.

So I'll see y'all on the afternoon of 8/19.

Good work Mig. Thank you for taking the bull by the horns. I do have a question though, and hopefully you can answer it or find out the answer.

Will they let us order off of the regular menu instead of a pre-fixed if we are a large party of people?

In my opinion, and this is just my opinion, there seems to be a much bigger selection from the regular menu, which gives us more choices, especially if there are some who really don't like what the pre-fix menu limits them to, and honestly, ordering ala carte from the regular menu does not appear to be that much more expensive then the pre-fix pried menu.

Just my opinion that we may be better off having more options ordering off the regular menu, so that everyone can eat what they would like and not be limited to what the restaurant;'s pre fixed menu says that they want to serve us.

I've made a reservation for Saturday night.

If I recall correctly from earlier in this thread, it's going to be at least 10 people maybe 12 (for Saturday, that is).

If I were pressed to make the reservation, I'd tell them between 10-15 people.

Apple
From what I counted, we will be at LEAST 15.

Personally, I don't go for that pre-fix stuff. If I'm going to go into a restaurant, I don't want them telling me what I have to eat and then basically pay the same price as if I ordered off the Ala Carte Menu. It's just a way to make things easy for themselves and at the same time boost up their profits.

Think about it. How does one justify, on the pre-fix menu, charging someone the same exact price of a 16oz. steak if they choose a chicken breast for their main course? And at the same time tell them this is what they HAVE to order?

Mig, great job. It's a good thing that you found this out in advance. Now at least we can decide if we want to go with one of these places and their pre-fixed menu, or explore some other options.

And if we really have no choice, then it looks to me that Shulas may be the better choice pre-fix menu compared to La Veranda's pre fix menu. But that's just my opinion.

Personally, as I said, I am not too thrilled about a Pre-Fix dinner.

Anyone else here care to post their thoughts about this?

You DON'T wanna know my thoughts on this!!

It'd be great if we can all sit down together, but beyond that I say we get separate checks. I know what I'd want to order, and it may only be available on an ala carte menu. I like to drink with my dinner and I don't wanna worry about someone getting their nose out of joint because I drank more than them. My dinner may cost more.... Fine. Give me my own check.

[/b][/quote]These are my thoughts as well. Someone may not be a big eater, and shouldn't feel obligated to order a big dinner because that's what everyone else is doing. The restaurant should have no problem in giving everyone separate checks, and we shouldn't feel obligated to order from the pre set menu if there's nothing on there we're really thrilled about.

Re: 8/19/06 Saturday Evening Dinner - 05/18/06 01:48 PM

I think we are dragging this out much more than needed.

Do we need our own room at the restaurant? If we simply made reservations ahead of time, for "X" amount of people, we could order from the menu right???? I'm ok either way really.

Like I said before, I don't care where we end up, but if a vote is required to decide, I'll go with my original vote of the Italian restaurant, not that Shula's isn't good, but simply to go somewhere I haven't been. I don't know anything about Philly or what other places are around there. That being said, I'll go along with whatever.

As far as separate checks,(although I swear Cardi said it was on him :p ) I didn't really think of that, but I think it is probably the best way to go, but again, I'll go along with most anything.

Mig, FYI, I am booked for Fri./Sat.

Thanks, Don Cardi...needless to say, I haven't reviewed the thread in quite a while !!

To tell you the truth, I don't consider 15 that large of a group. But I'm accustomed to NJ/NY restaurants...in Philadelphia (where WC Fields spent a week one night) that number of people might be considered a major event.

For what it's worth, I would rather we ordered individually as well. It would probably come to less or at least the same amount per person as the lowest price pre-fix at either place.

For christ's sake if it becomes this difficult we may as well just eat at the hotel (or perhaps that burger joint pictured earlier in the the other thread).

Apple

PS - regarding the 'separate checks' thing, I wouldn't mind it either if that's what everyone agreed to...but would never dare suggest it. Too much confusion and although some do end up spending WAY above what they individually ordered, you usually attend these group dinners with an understanding that the check will be divided evenly.

Re: 8/19/06 Saturday Evening Dinner - 05/18/06 03:45 PM

The restaurant would have a shit-fit if we asked for a dozen separate checks!! They would never go for it, because they're still serving one large group, and they need to be assured of their 21% "service charge". They probably also need to account for the room. (I know they did it in Somerset, but they weren't happy -- nor were we )

Splittig it equally is the easiest way; however, we should probably have a separate drink tab if that's possible. Not everyone drinks, or at least not everyone drinks as much as some of us.

Prix fixe or not, I don't care, but I agree with Cardi that it's not very frugal for what you get.

If we cannot sit in the separate room and order from the menu -- we can sit in the main dining room, at 2 or 3 tables, and order whatever we wanted -- and get one check per table. Even if we had our own room, with 15+ people, we wouldn't be seated in such a way where we could talk to everyone anyway -- we'd be at one really loooong table, or 2 separate tables anyway.

Just some thoughts... but as always, I don't care how it works!

Excellent point, TIS!! Aside from yours truly, exactly how many are going to attend only Saturday night dinner?

(raise hands, please...)

While this is definitely becoming interesting reading, I'm almost ready to suggest having the BIG soiree wherever you like and I'll be happy to take part in drinks/appetizers/group photo at the Moshulu.

I can only speak for myself here, I never have a problem splitting everything equally. Yes I might not drink as much as JG, but the sheer entertainment of watching JG get drunk is well worth the additional $$$. :p

I have to side with SC here. I think that if the restaurant doesn't like doing a few separate checks - TOUGH. I think there should be. I agree that there are some people who might order something more expensive, or someone who might have a few more cocktails, etc. I think SC is right on the nose. Like he said, if he wants to have a few more drinks, or order the surf n turf while someone else has an iced tea and a piece of chicken, why should the others feel forced to pick up his share? He's veing fair and equitable, as always.

As for the separate room, that would be nice. We do tend to be a rather loud group (and I am usually one of the loudest, I must admit ), but I've never heard of a restaurant that insists on giving a separate menu for that small a group. It's not like we're 40 people.

As for where we end up, I think that some of us may be afraid to make a decision based on the fact that the debate turned a bit ugly last time we went down this road. I think I've made my feelings pretty clear on where I wanted to go, but I will go along with the majority.

And Mig, was there a special reason that the word "cheesecake" was typed in all caps?? :p

Somerset...wasn't that the land of the half-frozen cheesecake?

By the way, I don't feel that this was ever a 'debate' as much as a confusing discussion. Problem became that there were too many people choosing between too many places. The only reason things got 'ugly' (and even that I would consider a bit strong a term) was that there was too much being thrown out there when a decision should've already been made and announced (for BOTH nights) long before it came to that point.

I have it from a good source though, that there are things being negotiated that are gonna solve all our problems and answer all our questions.

That's all I know right now...

Okay...

I dispatched Luca Brasi to Philly and he just returned. Things were negotiated that might solve all our problems...

La Veranda (and most other places Luca checked) would be willing to let us order ala carte, but as I suspected, and understandably, is not willing to write separate checks. Luca forgot to ask whether the bar tab could be separate, so perhaps they'd be willing to do that at least. I can't see why not.

In any event, I don't see the big deal with one check: It wouldn't take all that much work to calculate how much we each owe and add 21% to it. No one leaves until we have enough!

That's fair to everyone, and fairly easy.

I could have took the bull by the horns and said we are going here on Friday and there on Saturday but I'm not like that. I just want to make sure everybody has a say in what they want to eat and where they want to go. I really don't care where we go or how the checks come. We can go to TacoBell for all I care. I would be happy with that. I'm just looking forward to spend a couple days with ya.

CUT TO: SC and TIS's table -day

TIS : "SC, you never told me you knew the Manager of La Veranda!"

SC : "Sure... You wanna go there?"

TIS : "Huh? Oh, well, sure!"

SC : "My most valued and trusted friend helped us get reservations."

TIS : " Please, SC, tell me."

SC : " Well, when the plans to go to Philadelphia were first starting out, we were originally going to The Moshulu for dinner. And as the date got closer and closer, and it seemed that more and more memebers were going to attend, we wanted to get out of going to the Moshulu for dinner and instead go to a place that would have a menu selection that would be more satisfying to everyone who was attending. Now, MIG is Don Malta's godmother. And MIG called up this manager of La Veranda, and she offered him a guarenteed party of 15 people to let us make a reservation and order off of the Ala Carte menu. But the Manager said no.

So the next day, Don Malta went to see him; only this time with his Luca Brasi. And within an hour, he agreed to accept a reservation and allow us to order off the ala carte menu!"

TIS : " How'd he do that?"

SC : "Don Malta made him an offer he couldn't refuse."

TIS : "What was that?"

SC : " Our Luca Brasi held a gun to his head, and Don Malta assured him that either he'd agree to take our reservation and let us order off the regular menu, or he would wind up like the manager of The Tuscanny Grill over in Somerset N.J. wound up. That's a true story. That's my gangsterbb friends, TIS. It's not me."

Then we are agreed. The ordering from an ala carte menu will be permitted, but controlled -- and Don Malta will divy up the final amount-- and there will be drinks at The Moshulu before dinner at La Veranda on Saturday Night.

And let me add that thanks to MIG's being on top of things, her early inquirey with the restaurants helped us to get things straightened out. Thanks again Mama Mig!

A'ight, this is getting too confusing... :p

We're going to La Veranda Saturday night, for Italian, because that is the result of the original Poll. They were willing to let us order ala carte, so it works out just fine.

As for Friday night, we can have another poll and 7-page discussion for those who're going to be around that evening. Or, we can decide between the next two most-voted places: Shula's or Moshulu. Or, I'd be just as happy (or happier) going to Pat's for authentic cheesesteak.

La Veranda is fine with me, it's what I originally voted for (which I later regretted & wished I could take back in favor Moshulu, which would've still lost anyway).

But if the rest of you dare decide to have Friday's dinner at Moshulu, then don't expect to see me on Saturday. :p

Unless of course, you STILL plan on having pre-dinner drinks & photo there on Saturday.

Even though it's not the place...but the company !!
