I'd pay. Geoff spends his hard-earned money to keep this site/forum running. He's asked for nothing in return.

However, the problem lies in the fact that there are members on here who may not have a means of income (kids in school), who may not be able to pay a fee.

However, I can think of one plus. I guarantee it would rid us of the majority of the riff raff on this board (names aren't necessary).

He has provided us with links to his other sites, and on those sites there are really some fantastic things for us to see as far as our hobby goes.

I cannot see what the big deal is to pay a few doallars a month to help our Godfather keep this place up and running.

Think about it. $2.00 per month breaks down to about .07 cents a day to have access to these boards. That is nothing.

I only post on a couple different boards and haven't paid for any of them. However, if Geoff decided to charge us, I probably would pay $3.00. Of course Geoff would have to draw up a contract listing all the "perks" we will receive, fringe benefits, health plan and retirement benefits.

Presuming that everyone who voted so far is a fairly regular user, what I find most interesting is that 6 out of the 17 who voted (35%) would not be willing to pay even a nominal amount to remain a member.

People pay for magazine subscriptions and PPV television programming. On the internet, they pay to play fantasy sports games, they pay for dating and "matchmaking" services, and they pay for pornography.

I realize that there's a built in cost associated with internet use; payments that go to a cable TV company, or a telephone company, but this money does not find its way into the pockets of those who provide the content that makes us willing to absorb those initial costs in the first place.

Please understand that I'm not suggesting that any of those who said that they wouldn't be willing to pay do pay for any of the above, but I can't understand why someone would not be willing - assuming that they could afford it - to pay $1 a month to support a site that they use regularly.

Obviously Geoff has already decided that he will never charge any of us to use these boards or his site. So it really has now become a moot point.

I thank Geoff for his efforts, hard work and his generosity.

I think that your idea was a very good one and a sincere one. I personally wouldn't have had a problem financially contributing for the use of this site. But if he feels that he does not want any of us to pay him for using his site, then that's his decision to make. After all, we are not communists here.

I guess that the best way for us to show him our grattitude is for us to try and be a bit more civil towards each other when debating, and by using the banners on this site whenever we are in the market for something that may be available through the use of one of those banners.

But I hear where your coming from Plaw, and it boggles my mind too.

How many members do we have who have more than 100 posts and have posted atleast thrice a month for the last 3 months?

I just coined this arbitrary metric to see how many are here who are active members and are likely to continue that way. Assuming this is a reasonable metric, we have 63 active members who may pay anywhere between Zero and 3 dollars a month. If we again assume(yeah I know ASSuME ) that this distribution is uniform, we will have $1.5 per member. That comes to about $94.5 totally. That is a decent amount I think. I have seen web-hosting including cgi,php,emails etc for much less amount per month. So Geoff, in case your ads are not giving enough money, you consider this calculation for a start

I don't belong to many other sites, but this is definitely one with the most participation. Think of how many times Geoff/SC must get at their wits end, and still manage to stay cool, calm and collected. They definitely have what it takes to run this board, which is why it's been so successful for so long.
