War on Terror - 12/09/05 06:34 AM

On July 22, Jean Charles de Mendes was gunned down mistakenly by London Police.

4 years ago on september 11, US experienced something it never imagined would happen. The tragedy not only shocked the Americans, but also most of the world. Americans could never reconcile to the idea that someone could attack them on their own land, and yet had to face the tragic truth. When the wounds appeared to heal, many of them promised to themselves that they will not let some terrorist affect their way of life.

Compared to that, many beleived that London recovered almost too quickly after the July 7 attacks. They were praised, rightly so, for their resilience. By returning to normalcy, it looked as though they would not let some fanatic terrorist influence their way of life.

Probably jean charles too beleived in that myth. Who knows, he is not alive to share his thoughts. Too bad he looked like a muslim from asia. Too bad he was illegaly staying after his visa expired. No one could blame the police for making a wrong decision in a split second. After all, human reflexes are only so much sophisticated. But he was followed the previous day because he walked out of the building complex where the suspected terrorists were hiding. But not other men that wore thick jackets and carried large backpacks, it was him that they chased. When they shot him, the first news that was released said he is suspected to be from pakistan from his appearance. That was the reason he was monitored. Later they realized he was brazilian by nationality and probably had no idea to harm anyone.

The claim of return to normalcy was a myth. Actually a combination of paranoia, suspicion, deep-rooted hatred, intolerance and Xenophobia resulted in the death of Jean Charles de Mendes. If you look at the iraq situation, one can see the parallels. When hatred takes over reasoning, it does not matter whether civilians are dying. Someone must appease the fears of the collective paranoid minds. Why take a risk to find out who is being fought. Destroy the enemy, whether real or perceived. Terror has shifted from the terroists to the minds of the psychotic.

War on terror is an abused phrase. While the terrorists are being fought, terror itself has not been confronted. The attacks happening around the world are just providing the hate-monger the fuel to justify his hate for the 'others', be it a person from a different country or race or religion. Intolerance and xenophobia, which were dormant in their minds are just finding the channel to express themselves openly. The mass hysteria can subside when the mind is free of prejudice. It is prejudice that needs to be destroyed. Only then one would have truly fought the war on terror. Otherwise the old demons will repeatedly show their ugly heads whenever the mind is weak enough to accept anything that keeps it happily deluded.

This is the last thread I am going to participate discussing terrorism, iraq war, saddam and allied topics. Any comments (genuine/sarcastic), criticisms (constructive/negative) , brickbats, nukes(!), or whatever else is welcome. Thanks for reading.

Yes, When hatred took over reasoning, it didn't matter to 19 fanatics whether civilians would die.

Re: War on Terror - 12/09/05 01:20 PM

Actually, DC, it mattered very much to the 9/11 terrorists that civilians should die. That, after all, was there plan. svsg's point is that the role of the police and security forces is to preserve innocent life, whereas the terrorists' object is to kill and, well, terrify.

A further point is that we should never allow ourselves to be reduced to the thinking or morality of the terrorist.

The main concerns over the de Menezes shooting is that (1) an innocent man was killed by police (a tad worrying, don't you think? - well it should worry you). (2) The police lied about the incident, saying he was running away from police and wearing a baggy jacket, in fact neither was true.

What really pisses me off is people who just shrug their shoulders and say "ah well, in this great God-inspired war against terror and evil, some innocent will die.". For me, "ah, well" is NEVER an acceptable response to the taking of an innocent life.

My support for security and counter-terrorism STOPS at the point where the state becomes as bad as the terrorist: when it violates rule of law for example. "Rule of law" is not simply a nice liberal catchphrase, it means something very important, without which free society cannot exist.

If we abrogate the rule of law in the name of the war on terror, then the terrorists have made a significant victory. They're aiming to destroy Western civilization... we respond by suspending civil liberties and rule of law... you don't have to be a genius or a liberal to see that we're handing victory to the terrorists on a plate.

That's not what I said.

I said I support counter-terrorist action up to the point where that action makes us no better than the terrorists: e.g. suspension of fundamental civil liberties, rule of law, and torture.

Can you tell me how many the US has tortured? Why all those planes are flying to undisclosed locations in Eastern Europe and Africa? What is the US doing to these people that is so bad that they have to take them off American soil? These are the issues that worry me and should worry anybody else who is concerned about protecting a free society.

Who debated him? As a matter of fact some of the things that he wrote make some sense. All I did was add on to what he said by pointing out the 3000 civilian lives that were taken from us.

And I didn't attack him, call him any names, or piss on him in any way. That's what I am talking about when I mention about properly debating.

But let's say, for a moment, that I was debating him. Is my posting the names of 3000 civilians being killed, in reply to his statement about civilians being killed, considered improper debating in your eyes?

What's the matter with you Enzo? trying to start a debate for no reason. I expected better from you.

So Dr., does that make it excusable? Are we supposed to understand them now and realize that they were only doing what they felt needed to be done? Are we supposed to accept it as being "strictly business?

That is unexcusable in our world. I don't dispute that. But that is completely unrelated to discussing the war on terror. Nothing to do with it whatsoever.

As far as the total death count on 9/11, well for some reason, (one that is very upsetting to me), whenever some people talk about the deaths on 9/11, they only quote the death total of those who were murdered in the towers, always forgetting the number of people on the planes and in the Pentagon.

Maybe he meant "incident".

DC, it is important we never forget those who died on 9/11 and the lives lost to that atrocious act of terrorism. On the other hand, posting a list of names was an excessive and unfair response to svsg's call for a debate on the issue of the De Menezes shooting. Could you please remove and/or link them so that people can read them if they wish without them taking up room on a thread which is not directly about the victims of 9/11.
Posted By: DonMichaelCorleone

Re: War on Terror - 12/09/05 03:47 PM

The people who died on 9/11 should never be forgotten. Dr, you did not go through anything near what Cardi went through, he has strong feelings the same way you do. If he wants to post all of the names in a thread about the war on terror, then why not always remember the event that truly sparked it?

If it offends you in anyway then don't read it, why should HE be censored?

They are always just grouped into "the three thousand people that died on 9/11" maybe some of the people not from the Eastern United States see the list of names and cities they will see why we have such strong feelings about it.

You feel it has no place in this thread, DC obviously feels it does, if you don't like it dont read it.

Re: War on Terror - 12/09/05 04:30 PM

Glad we're all being so rational here.

I was not trying to "censor" and I never alleged that he broke any rule. I asked him nicely and said "please".

Here's what happened: Svsg starts a thread about the De Menezes shooting and the wider context of counter-terrorism and security. DC posts a list of those killed at 9/11. Does having a personal association with that grave tragedy entitle someone to hijack threads in this manner? That, DS, is "the hell" why.

And on his personal connection with 9/11, might I remind you, DA and DC, how easily you brushed aside the "personal connection" of the lady who was protesting outside the White House, whose son had been killed in Iraq. Apparently she was making a bit of a fuss. So let's not pretend we have the monopoly on tradegy here.

So, what's it to be? A rational debate, or unproductive flaming? As if I don't already know the answer...

ok Dr, now I'm pretty pissed but I'm going to write this as nice as possible. You insult members of the board (Double-J a few months back) and then not 10 minutes after writing that this won't turn into a flame war you go and insult Vercetti in the other thread "there is no excuse for ignorance" He said what he learned, you learned something different so in your eyes he's ignorant and that gives you the right to insult him? You are one of the last people who can say you already know the answer to a thread turning into a flame war.

If that really makes sense to you, then I see absolutely no reason for us to continue this discussion.
My Africa statement is totally relevant: The most powerful men in the world (Bush, all the EU-leaders) don't seem to realize that Africa is problem number 1, not Iraq. So that is relevant.
Your list is totally irrelevant, since we already know 2987 people died on 9/11. We have honored them, there were memorials, the world was mourning. In Africa, they are still dying, and except for Bono and me , is there anybody mentioning them?

Re: War on Terror - 12/09/05 10:14 PM

First off, it's not a 'War' on terror. A war can be won. We cannot put every terrorist in jail or kill them all. It's just the conservative media brainwashing us.

DC - Hey, in like 60 years, all those people you listed, no one is going to care. I'm thrilled you posted that. Does anyone remember what was 2 days ago? Does Pearl Harbor ring a bell? It wasn't mentioned on the nightly news I watched at all. There was no thread made. It is all but forgotten, just like 9/11 will be.

Oh, and to the people who were actually in NY on 9/11, you don't have some kind've priviledge to now curse at me or throw insults just because you were there that day, so please refrain from doing so.

Quote:
See Enzo I take no offense to mentioning Italian deaths (okay German and Japenese too lol just kidding) because they are soldiers who died fighting for their country. Their job was to defend their country against our SOLDIERS, it was a WAR. These hijackers knowingly attacked civilians, that is why they shouldn't be listed.
DMC - First, why shouldn't the hijackers be part of the people deceased? A life is a life.

Second, you're saying that the enemies in World War II should be mentioned in the number of casualties because they were part of a war. If you insist on stating that the hijackers shouldn't be on that list, does that mean that you agree with me and say that there is no 'war' on terror? You can't have it both ways.

Shut the borders!

Lock down the hatches!

DC, what you intended with your list is best known to you. With all due respect, I (and I presume a few more members) do not have the time to read your entire post (which probably could be the longest one ever posted, I speculate). Sorry about that.

When I mentioned that all kinds of responses are welcome, I implied it for me. It is unfortunate that Dr. and others who wanted to bring back the focus to the topic were attacked.

The distinction between terror and terrorism, how terror continues to rule the mind and might probably continue to rule long after the terrorists are defeated, and other such messages I tried to explore in my intial post have got lost in the personal fights. But I am not complaining. I still urge all of you to share your thoughts. When so many of you feel so paasionately about the subject, why not translate your thoughts into words and make the discussion more meaningful?

1. Africa can't help itself. They're so far gone, they can't let welfare and plain surviving appear by magic, someone has to give it to them.
2. You know who's fault it is they're in such a bad shape: Europe. With the colonisation, they've destroyed the continent. So Europe has the duty to help them.
3. America seems to have enough money, they're spending it on useless wars like Iraq, so why not using that money to help starvation out of the world.
4. All other rich countries also have to help the poor countries: That's their human duty.
5. How? Not just sending money, but giving them infrastructure, so they can take care of their own.

Although this is one of the more "intellectual" forums on the net, it is still trapped in the yoke of blind patriotism and cliqueishness.

There is no real opportunity for rational debate. I appreciate your efforts to stimulate debat svsg, but they are wasted here. All that results is a lot of back-slapping and self-congratulation among the conservative pro-Bush American clique on these boards. Anyone else gets flamed and shouted down.

Sorry to be boring, but gettig back on topic, I notice that the officers involved in the appalling De Menezes shooting are now facing charges here in the UK for unlawful killing.

I think he used the name as an emotional way to point out that we have to restrict personal liberties, so deaths like those on the list won't happen again. That is, IMO, using the list as an object to express a political opinion.

You're points are right, but you have the wrong solutions. Nobody needs to be sending any money, and it won't help anyways. Free food aid just means farmers can't sell anything. The West Wing debate had the right solution: tax cuts. The European colonists put in rules that made it impossible for the colonies to compete with them, and those countries haven't been smart enough to see the damage and get rid of those rules. In some of those countries you are looking at 70-90% tax rates, so nothing gets made legally. Some of these countries used to be big food exporters, but then their dictators made things worse., and now Zimbabwe has famine. Debt relief, food aid, AIDS money, and all the other trendy solutions are a waste of time. Those countreis need to figure things out for themselves, and the best assistance to be provided would be economists who can explain to them how to open up their government.

Because of its absolute disgusting appeal to emotions. How soap opera it is. How false, over the top, propagandaist it is. What's the point in it? To remind us why we're at war? If that's the reason, then it has failed, because it isn't the reason we're at war. Well, it is, but it isn't a justified reason.

The tragedy of course isn't funny. Silly.

The whole concept of some "tribute" site is funny. And the whole delivery of it. The use of Enya's music, the images. The whole thought that somebody sat down and spent hours doing that. It isn't even an official site, for goodness sake. Anybody could have made it. I could have.

Though mine wouldn't have been half as good.

What is wrong or funny of someone out of the goodness of their heart to make a memorial site? Who cares if it is not official. I would have made one but I don't have the talent or the knowledge. IMHO that was a cold hearted thing for you to say. This person felt the need to do it so they did it. And God bless them for it.

Hmm.. difficult to see how that site is "funny", I have to say I can understand Don Smitty's chagrin here. People express sorrow, grief and anger in different ways, it's true that site is a very shmaltzy Disney, typically American way of expressing it, but it is still a valid way of expressing those reactions and emotions.

It's a shame that we're all getting into this sniping and back-biting when we presumably all agree on a basic idea: that the 9/11 attacks, like any major loss of innocent life to terrorism, were appalling, and that we would all be happy to see planned organized terrorist attacks thwarted, and the perpetrators brought to justice.

We only disagree on the detail.

DS, this is even better than DC's post. You have posted the same link 7 times in addition to one in your signature. Thanks DS for proving my point. Your mind has got terrorized. Now even if osama and other terrorists are killed, you will never return to normalcy. never. You will still advocate for war on some other country, because in your mind everyone is out there to wipe americans out of earth. Today it is Iraq, tomorrow some other country. The day you stop posting "SCUMBAG ", slob and other such stuff about every other group of people/culture/country, we will know you are no longer terrorized in your mind. Till then you are re-inforcing just what I said. However I again thank you for readily illustrating my point, which some people might have missed becasue of the language of my initial post.

First of all, I didn't "YELL" at DC. I wasn't even angry, I just pointed out that it might not be a good way to prove his point by using other people's names--let THEM decide if they want to be used for propaganda that may or may not adhere to what they believe.

And I didn't react to the "funny" because I'm not on this board everyday, AND I understtod that the "funny" part wasn't the tragedy, it was applied to YOU and these types of tributes, which, frankly, I find more sad than funny.
