National anthems - 01/24/06 08:52 AM

Aside from your own country's, which national anthem do you like?

I think that my fav one is La Marseillaise, the French anthem. I'm sure the "Casablanca" movie fans here agree! But I like the USA, the Germany and the GB ones too. I also loved the anthems of the former USSR and DDR.

JM, I think I never listened to the Russia anthem!!

A good site is here

Brazil, Italy, France. BTW Russia has adopted the old Soviet music with different words as its anthem again

Lovely! But they've got the one of ours which has not been used for over 10 years or so.

The one we use right now is here:

Though God Save the Queen isn't are official national anthem it's kind of been adopted as it. And no you'll never hear me sing those words. Unless it's the Sex Pistols version.

If I remember correctly Italy's has a quite upbeat tempo and is pretty fun.

Absolutely, DC. Canada's, France's and the old Soviet anthem are all very beautiful. And Lavi, you are also 100% right - that scene in Casablanca is one of the best ever filmed!! Vive La France!!

Does the Jamaican anthem have a reggae beat? I think that would be cool. ....No, Woman No Cry....

I'd have to go with God Save the Queen.

Oh, Canada is pretty sweet. I love to sing it at the hockey games (with drunken Canadians next to me, of course).

But in my neoconservative patriotic right-wing racist opinion, nothing beats Francis Scott Key's Star-Spangled Banner, though as far as patriotic songs are concerned, I love John Philip Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever, always the standard on the 4th of July.

Born in The USA

Oh wait, that isn't the national anthem.

Re: National anthems - 01/25/06 12:15 AM

I don't know too many national anthems, but other than the Canadian national anthem (O Canada) I would say that I really like the American national anthem (The Star Spangled Banner), The French national anthem (La Marseillaise), although I absolutely despise the "royal" family the British national anthem (God Save The Queen) is nice too. Again, I don't know too much about the national anthems of the world so I guess I'm the wrong person to ask. I do like the American national hymns or songs or whatever. God Bless America is nice, but America The Beautiful has almost brought me to tears at times and I'm not even American!

Canada and France, as several others have mentioned, have beautiful national anthems. Canada's is peaceful and makes you feel secure, while France's is strong and makes you feel proud.

I couldn't hear it on the site, but I bet it does.

I like the Russian one as well, I think it's beautiful. So is Israel's, which I hear occasionally at various places. The one they've got for Canada on that site has a funky beat... very late 80's I-just-bought-a-synth kind of thing.

I thought ours was "My Way" though... it's not? Like Frank said, "We will now do the national anthem, but you needn't rise!"

By the way, my favorite scene featuring the French anthem is not in Casablanca, but on the Martin & Lewis Comedy Hour, when Dean and Jerry are working a soda fountain. A man comes in and orders French ice cream, and these two turn to each other and start singing the French national anthem at the top of their lungs. I still laugh when I think of it.

Well, I was trying to be accommodating. The real truth is I don't care for any of 'em, save my own 'National Anthem,' which is "Dixie."

Maybe something is wrong on the site. [/b][/quote]Yes it is. It's "Patriotic Song" by Glinka. Yeltsin had plans to make it anthem, but it has no words, and finally they took the Soviet one back changing the words. I never heard anyone singing new words, though Neither do I...

I'm glad they kept the old one. It's so beautiful! It got the solemmnity an anthem must have. As for changing words, it doesn't make any difference to me...I do not undesrtand a single world in both cases....

Not everywhere it is based, some couplets are strongly changed.

The worst is the Italian one that goes on forever.

I like the French and the UK.

Music
Mexicanos, al grito de Guerra
El acero, aprestad y el bridón,
y retiemble en sus centros la tierra.
Al sonoro rugir del cañón.

Ciña ¡Oh patria tus sienes de oliva!
De la paz el arcángel divino,
Que en el cielo tu eterno destino
Por el dedo de Dios escribió.
Más si osare un extraño enemigo
Profanar con su planta tu suelo
Pienso ¡Oh patria querida! Que el cielo
Un soldado en cada hijo te dio.
Coro
Mexicanos, al grito de Guerra
El acero, aprestad y el bridón,
y retiemble en sus centros la tierra.
Al sonoro rugir del cañón.

II
¡Guerra, guerra sin tregua al que intente
De la patria manchar los blasones!
¡Guerra, guerra! Los patrios pendones,
En las olas de sangre empapad.
¡Guerra, guerra! En el monte, en el valle
Los cañones horrísonos truenen,
Y los ecos sonoros resuenen
Con las voces de ¡Unión! ¡Libertad!

Mexicanos, al grito de Guerra
El acero, aprestad y el bridón,
y retiemble en sus centros la tierra.
Al sonoro rugir del cañón.

III
Antes, patria, que inermes tu hijos
Bajo el yugo su cuello dobleguen
Tus campiñas con sangre se rieguen
Sobre la sangre se estampe su pie.
Y tus templos, palacios y torres
Se derrumben con hórrido estruendo,
Y sus ruinas existan diciendo:
De mil héroes la patria aquí fué.

Mexicanos, al grito de Guerra
El acero, aprestad y el bridón,
y retiemble en sus centros la tierra.
Al sonoro rugir del cañón.

IV
¡Patria! ¡Patria! Tus hijos te juran
Exhalar en tus aras su aliento,
Si el clarín con su bélico acento
Los convoca a lidiar con valor.
¡Para ti las guirnaldas de oliva!
¡Un recuerdo para ellos de gloria!
¡Un laurel para tí de victoria!
¡Un sepulcro para ellos de honor!

Mexicanos, al grito de Guerra
El acero, aprestad y el bridón,
y retiemble en sus centros la tierra.
Al sonoro rugir del cañón.
