A movie that nobody seems to like except you... - 02/27/05 08:37 PM

Since we had a controversal thread, about hating movies that evrybody likes, let's talk about liking movies everybody hates.
Yes, I know, there's a bad joke: "Why everyone says it's a movie for idiots? I liked it so much..."
I'm not talking about these. Just about matters of taste...

I can't help liking "Bobby Dierfield", for example. I feel that it's just a little too "European", too "slow" to be liked in America. But I think it has inimitable atmosphere...
And you?

The one that comes to mind right now is The Punisher and to an extent Catwoman (and yes I did buy both on DVD).

Two Bits with Al Pacino. Don Malta may be the only other one that likes this movie besides me!

DC, it would be interesting to watch this movie, but they don't show it on TV and I, in short, can't find it. Be so good - tell me, what's it like? Is it a good movie or it's good because of Al? And why other people dislike it?

Plot Summary for
Two Bits (1995):
It's a hot summer day in 1933 in South Philly, where 12-year old Gennaro lives with his widowed mom and his ailing grandpa, who sits outside holding tight to his last quarter, which he's promised to Gennaro and which Gennaro would like to have to buy a ticket to the plush new movie theater. But grandpa's not ready to pass on the quarter or pass on to his final reward: he has some unfinished business with a woman from his past, and he enlists Gennaro to act as his emissary.

Another one that comes to mind is :

BIG NIGHT

Plot Summary for
Big Night (1996):
Primo and Secondo are two brothers who have emigrated from Italy to open an Italian restaurant in America. Primo is the irascible and gifted chef, brilliant in his culinary genius, but determined not to squander his talent on making the routine dishes that customers expect. Secondo is the smooth front-man, trying to keep the restaurant financially afloat, despite few patrons other than a poor artist who pays with his paintings. The owner of the nearby Pascal's restaurant, enormously successful (despite its mediocre fare), offers a solution - he will call his friend, a big-time jazz musician, to play a special benefit at their restaurant. Primo begins to prepare his masterpiece, a feast of a lifetime, for the brothers' big night...

Pat, me and all my friends looove the Breakfast Club. I think I must have watched this movie like 50 times over the summer! I thought Rocky IV was a decent movie, but I was depressed by it. Here are some movies that I love that everyone else hates:

Hair (i've been made fun of )
Mannequin
The Life of David Gale

I liked Mannequin and yes Mannequin 2 and I own The Life of David Gale on DVD. I saw it twice in the theaters and when it came out I heard a lot of people didn't like it. What wasn't there to like? Decent directing with a great ending, plus a good cast.

I'm glad to hear that some of you like Rambo III. I know I did. The first two were the best, but I liked them all.

Speaking of Sly, and knowing most here don't like him, I guess I'll include these movies:

Lockup
Tango & Cash
The Specialist

I only saw Judge Dredd because Sly was in it, but I didn't like it at all. Won't see it again.

I thought the Life of David Gale was a good movie, but with more viewings it loses it's impact. Ebert, gave it zero stars.

Oscar. People think I'm joking when I say I love it. I don't get why everyone thinks it's a dumb movie. Okay, so it's got its small share of hit-and-miss moments, but all comedies do.

Plaw, are you talking about the comedy Mafia, with Jay Mohr?

I also thought of Four Rooms

Yes, it definitely had the most impact the 1st time I saw it. Zeros stars was just awful though. I had never even seen Ebert give a movie zero before.

And I really liked Tango and Cash when I was a little kid, for some reason I used to watch it all the time

Really? Most of the people I've heard said they hated it. At my work, you would not believe the amount of people who return it and actually ask for their money back (a whopping $2.15)

Put me down as another fan of The Breakfast Club. That movies hits home for me cause when I was in high school the principal, and vice principal more than once gave me saturday detentions. Course I I missed over half of them.

This will seem strange to you folks but where I live noone likes Scarface, the 1983 version.

That's the one. I thought it was hilarious.

If you like it, that'll make two of us here.

Put me down as a fan of The Life of David Gale. Great surprise ending.

And Turnbull, I don't think the problem with True Confessions is that nobody likes it. I think the problem is that hardly anyone has even seen it.

I happen to like Sly also. One movie that he made back in the late 70's that I thought was probably one of his best pieces of acting was a movie titled "F.I.S.T." where he played a Union leader loosely based on the life of Jimmy Hoffa. For some reason this movie along with Stallone's performance never got the recognition that it deserved. Another Stallone movie that I LOVE is "Paradise Alley." He co-stars with a young actor, who at the time, was an unknown named Armand Assante.

If you haven't seen these then I suggest that you check these two out.

Thanks for details about Two Bits, DC. Seems to be nice. Whenever I see it, I'll watch.
BTW, had anyone seen "Author, Author"? Looks like a rare item too. Is it good?

DC,

I have seen Fist & Paradise Alley, but only one time, and remember liking them, but I really don't remember too much of the plot, since it's been so long ago.

I don't own the movieo and they are never on tv. I like them both as well. I also liked The Lords Of Flatbush, which seemed to be unoticed. That was the first Stallone movie I had seen and that too is never on tv.

I have tried to find Paradise Alley on DVD, but it is not available yet. As for FIST, I have that on DVD. Do you own a DVD player TIS?

Lords Of Flatbush. Yes. SC and I discussed this movie over in another thread recently. Here is something that I wrote that may interest you :
__________________________________________________
A lot of actors came from that movie SC!

Perry King
Sylvestor Stallone
Susan Blakely
Dolph Sweet
Ray Sharkey
Henry Winkler
Armand Assante

I believe that Stallone was even a writer for the movie.

Do you know that story of how Lords Of Flatbush played a role in Stallone's success with Rocky?
After doing Lord's, Stallone was broke and unable to get any good roles. He had $100 left from making Lord's. So he used that money to buy a ticket to see a fight between Mohammad Ali & Chuck Wepner. Wepner was a down and out bartender from Bayonne, known as "The Bayonne Bleeder and Ali's people gave him a shot at the title. After seeing the fight and reading abour Wepner, Stallone came up with the idea of the Rocky character, which is loosley based on Wepner. He wrote the Rocky story but the major motion picture companies wanted another actor to play Rocky, and they wanted to buy the rights to the character from Stallone. He refused to compromise his character's story and insisted that he play the title role. The movie studios said no. So he went and got some small financial backing, went to the other actors (that eventually played in the movie) and made a deal with them that if the movie was a success, he would give them money based on what the movie made. They agreed! The big movie studios and bigwigs in hollywood all said that his Rocky movie would be a failure. The rest is history!

How would you like to have a failure like that one!

You and DP should see Nolan's other two films, which I think are great, Following and Insomnia. Following's narrative is random, as if he was experimenting, but by the end you'll be glad you watched it.

Insomnia is great, even for a remake. Nolan's direction is excellent in showing the effects of insomnia and combined with good acting and story, makes it great. David Julyan who did the music for these three movies does a similar sound to Memento here.

Following is not very known. It was an indie-film Nolan did with his friends and is out on DVD, it's a movie from 1998.

DC,

I knew about Sly being broke when he did Rocky, and that nobody wanted him to star in it, but didn't know all the details. Thanks for the info

I do have a DVD player, and would like FIST, but please don't go to any trouble, as I can probably buy it thru Amazon no???

Paradise Alley is a real guilty pleasure of mine. That rain-drenched finale is fantastic.

And, staying with Sly, Lock Up was probably the first film I saw which I considered marvellous. Films watched since have dented my view of it, but I'd happily watch it again to pass a few hours by.

Fear and Loating in Las Vegas. I read the novel a few years ago, and immediatly went out to see the film. Everytime I bring it up though, 9 out of 10 times I get a look that say's "I bet you do lot's of drugs."

I put one of my favorite quotes from the film in my signature today, in memory of Hunter S. Thompson.
