Proverbs and Philosophy.

Proverbs and Philosophy. - 11/18/04 11:15 AM

The 'Best Line from a Song' thread inspired this and in particular Sullivan's contribution of the Fools rush in quote. The actual proverb it's based on is "Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread", I think.

Other personal favourites include:

"Millions saw the apple drop. Only Newton asked why."

"A love affair with knowledge never ends in heartbreak."

"It's what you learn after you know it all that counts."

All from unknown sources I'm afraid.

If you've got some wisdom to share, let it be known. I could read this stuff for hours.

Turi, this could all get a bit David Brent!

Anyway, my personal favourite is "worse things happen at sea".

"One hundred sheep led by a lion will defeat one hundred lions led by a sheep."

I have no idea where that comes from, I think it's an old arabic proverb or something.

Good ones Don Ferro and Irishman

I had to search to get this quote "exact", because I didn't remember it word for word.

"Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind. War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today."

I know these aren't proverbs or philosophies, but I like em anyway

What kind of peace do I mean and what kind of a peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war, not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace -- the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living -- and the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and build a better life for their children -- not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women -- not merely peace in our time but peace in all time.

"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are."

"Things turn out best for people who make the best out of the way things turn out"

"Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful."

Here are some funny Mae West ones I love:

"You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough."

"Don't cry for a man who's left you, the next one may fall for your smile."
