DA--I have a question for you. I haven't heard Kerry comment about the embargo on Cuba except that he somewhat supports it. Do you think he'd lift it if he became President? -Pat

I haven't heard much talk about this. Kerry gains nothing right now in favoring a lift.

But I would guess that even a moderate Republican would lift it. The farm state and pro-business Republicans and Democrats want to sell to Cuba. Even in the Cuban-American community, this issue, though still big, is not as huge as it once was.

Older Americans will never feel that way about Castro and Cuba. The sixties were a tuff time for many older people with the tension over the missles.

"Hate" - can come from predjudice if you haven't had a direct experience. So, could I assume that their are some predjudice folks on the BB? Fidel has been there a long time. One trip. We had a President who used to fall a lot and hit people with golf balls. They're human, and maybe spastic.

Spastic, yeah.

Anyone who threatens the US is not really going to be my "buddy," and the Cuban Missile Crisis kinda seals the deal as a "not so nice guy" on my list, anyways.

I can't believe how some people ignore Castro's history with the US.

If Hitler we're still alive today, would we hail (or perhaps, more appropriately, "heil") him for uniting his German nation, and let bygones be bygones?

If these people are so "liberated," then why do they risk life and limb coming to America?

Are you honestly going to compare Hitler to Castro?

Re: Will Bush take credit for the Fall of Castro? - 10/23/04 05:23 PM

What you guys are forgetting about the Cuban Missle Crisis is that the Missles did not belong to Castro. They were Soviet missles.

The Russians were the only ally that Cuba had at the time (even the Red Chinese were in kind of an "idealogical war" with the Russians over whose brand of Communism was "better") and were supplying Castro with a good deal of military as well as economic aid.

My common sense tells me that Castro had no designs on going to war with the U.S., nor did he wish Cuba to be the reason for the start of a nuclear World War III.

I'm sure he even realized that maintaining some modicum of friendly relations and trading with the U.S. would be in Cuba's best interests, despite whatever public pronouncements he may have made at the time to the contrary.

He simply went along with the placement of Soviet missles in Cuba because he was given no choice by the Kremlin.

I'm using your rationale of forgive and forget with regards to anti-American dictators.

True, but as I explained to Patrick on AIM, it would be like us asking Canada to point nukes at N.Korea or Iraq. The int'l community would shit on that (well, at least the EU).

And yes, I realize we have some US nukes stashed in Canadian missile silos.

Re: Will Bush take credit for the Fall of Castro? - 10/23/04 05:36 PM

And I have to disagree with you. I don't think anyone would be upset. If we're so convinced that these countries have WMDs, then there's no reason we shouldn't point any type of weapon at them, ESPECIALLY North Korea and IraN. I think the US was more upset at the fact that Castro was a communist then anything. It's not like Cuba wasn't instigated into putting these missles up either. First off, as Plaw said, they didn't really have a choice, and second, even if they DID have a choice, I would've pointed them at the US too. Look how many times we tried to kill Castro or overthrow him. If another country sent people into our country to kill Bush, would it be wrong to point missles at them? -Pat

I'm sure Nikita Kruschev had to absolutely twist Fidel's arm to get those nukes into position.

He chose to put them up. End of story.

---

And like I said in AIM, I don't think we need to 'point' nukes at anyone. Let's keep them in their little silos as long as possible, m'kay?

Do you think JFK was negotiating with Castro instead of Khrushev during the Missle Crisis?! Please read "The Best and the Brightest" or any other related books that covers that time period if think they were Castro's missiles.

On SNL last night, they added a gun shot to video of him tripping. The joke was that it was Bush or Kerry's attempt to appeal to Cuban-American voters.

I thought the joke was that it was Kerry's attempt to appeal to Cubans. Maybe I heard wrong.

Is it just me, or is the new Weekend Update getting really lame? All of SNL is going down, that's a given... but Weekend Update in particular.

nope its not just you. Tina Faye or whatever is very hot (if she'd take off those glasses) and her jokes are still kinda good but that new women is NOT FUNNY and the jokes are horrible for her.
