Top Ten Favorite Movies... - 01/30/04 01:02 AM

Yeah, another list thread. I'm a compulsive list maker, I think. [John Cusack, High Fidelity tongue wink ] Anyhow, there's probably been a thread or two about this before, but it's been a while and we've got new members, so what the hell, right?

Keep in mind, this is your favorites, not what you perceive to be the best. I think The Godfather is the best movie ever made, but I enjoy certain films more making them favorites. Capiche? Here we go.

1. Pulp Fiction/Fight Club [a tie, I really can't pick just one, I love them both equally]
2. Reservoir Dogs
3. GoodFellas
4. Jackie Brown
5. True Romance
6. American History X
7. Taxi Driver
8. The Godfather Trilogy
9. Kill Bill
10. Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

10-25, not ordered: The Matrix/Matrix Reloaded, Blow, From Dusk 'Till Dawn, The Boondock Saints, Raging Bull, Edward Scissorhands, Silence Of The Lambs/Red Dragon, Snatch, High Fidelity, My Cousin Vinny, Heat, The Green Mile, Scarface, Dog Day Afternoon, Rain Man and Donnie Brasco. [bleh, there's sixteen... one more, so fuck off tongue ]

Re: Top Ten Favorite Movies... - 01/30/04 01:13 AM

1. MEMENTO - What can I saw? One of the greatest directions in story telling in history. Making you into the character. Confusing you to help you understand. There is no word to describe my love for this movie.

2. Fight Club - We all dream of an upgrade of ourselves, don't we? We want to live lives we have a small percent of gaining. What happens when you run with what you covet? I was blown away by this film. A definate film about discovering yourself.

3. Pulp Fiction - One of the great crime films with a great direction twisting three stories in one. "Royale With Cheese" wink

4. The Usual Suspects - One of the greatest thrillers with a great direction pulling you here and there confusing you until it all pulls together in the end. "I'm tellin' you it's KEYSER SOZE!" tongue

5. Citizen Kane - I don't think it deserves explanation. The greatest story of a empty life where wealth cannot save you.

6. Scarface - No comment Cabron. tongue

7. Snatch - Pulp Fiction with a comedy twist. Hilarious even when it defys some reality.

8. The Godfather - Must I explain? I'm a Wop, I need not to explain. tongue

9. American Beauty - a Beautiful story of living life YOUR way and not being submissive.

10. Once Upon a Time in America - The greatest film of a regretful life that still cannot be explained. Friends are more valuable then anything. "When you are betrayed by a friend you hit back."

Honorable mention
Carlito's Way, Casino, Serpico, Rear Window, Fistful of Dollars, Dirty Harry, Animal House

Re: Top Ten Favorite Movies... - 01/30/04 03:22 AM

This is a list of my favorites, so don't be surprised by some of them.

10. Cool Hand Luke (1967/Stuart Rosenberg): This movie defines the term 'character study'. Luke Jackson (Paul Newman in his best role) is probably one of the coolest characters in motion picture history. A great film about non-conformity and self triumph out of loss.

9. Seven Samurai (1954/Akira Kurosawa): This just might be the greatest story ever told, and a simple one at that. Kurosawa did an excellent job bringing a story with moments of beauty and moments of action to the screen.

8. Platoon (1986/Oliver Stone): Before Oliver Stone went over the top with the flasy "JFK" and "Natural Born Killers", he made this poetic war film that redefined the classic theme of 'good v.s. evil'.

7. North By Northwest (1959/Alfred Hitchcock): No doubt Hitchcock's best collaboration with Cary Grant. This film is one of the most original action packed movies full of suspense and romance.

6. Psycho (1960/Alfred Hitchcock): Hitchcock's best, and one of the most influential films of all time. With this film, Hitchcock broke all the rules, and started the slasher genre.

5. Pulp Fiction (1994/Quentin Tarantino): Another great influential film, and probably the most entertaining. The lives of many kaleidoscopic characters (most of them criminals) collide into three different stories. Samuel L. Jackson really stands out in this film.

4. Ben-Hur (1959/William Wyler): The best of the 1950's biblical epics. Some of the best scenes in film history are in this film, including the now famous chariot scene, which is probably the best directed scene in cinematic history.

3. The Godfather Part II (1974/Francis Ford Coppola): Coppola's famous crime family is extended in this prequel/sequel of the first film. This time around, you see the rise and fall of the Corleone family.

2. Apocalypse Now (1979/Francis Ford Coppola): A frightening look at the darkness of the human soul, and the process of insanity taking over the hearts of men during the Vietnam War. This is a rare viewing experience that will leave you speechless. Contains one of the best openings and the best closing scene of all time.

1. The Godfather (1972/Francis Ford Coppola): This is where it all started. The ultimate tale of the mafia. and it shows the true meaning of family and loyalty. Simply the best.

Re: Top Ten Favorite Movies... - 01/30/04 05:48 PM

I made a ALL ROUND TOP TEN, giving 10 points to all films we mentioned as #1 and 1 point to all #10's, etc.

here is "our" top ten overall:

1.The Godfather - 73 pts
2.Scarface - 58 pts
3.The Godfather part II - 57 pts
4.Pulp Fiction - 50 pts
5.Memento - 39 pts
6.Fight Club - 36 pts
7.Goodfellas - 30 pts
8.The Usual Suspects - 25 pts
9.Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - 22 pts
10.Reservoir Dogs - 19 pts

this includes everyone's lists from Anthony Lombardi until mine

(The Godfather's 73 points were from 10 members, so on average it got 7,3 points, more than a whole point on average less than THE USUAL SUSPECTS, who's 3 mentions have an average of 8,3333 points per vote)

Both Taxi Driver as Gladiator got 3 votes but didn't make it into the top ten, with 16 points - the same amount as the two other Lord of the Rings films.

24 films have 10-or-more points.

In total, exactly 75 films were mentioned.

Over-rated? What the hell are you talking about it? All I hear is people bashing it 'cause it isn't "as good as Pulp and Dogs." It's a very clever, very good film. One of the best? No. Well made? Yes.

And did you notice me say that this is for FAVORITES, and not for what I perceive to be the best? I can think a film is better than another, but like one more. The Godfather is the best movie of all time, but I like Pulp Fiction better.

And hahahah, you say Jackie Brown sucks yet you mention Scarface? Scarface is good -- but that's over-rated.

I'd have to disagree with you there about Scarface. Compared to LOTR, Scarface is an unknown. But we all have our opinions, but I don't understand how Scarface is overrated? As for me, I said Jackie Brown was my favorite Tarintino movie because of Samuel L. Jackson & the dialogue. Plus it had a great cast (like all of his other films), but I loved Samuel L., Chris Tucker, and Robert De Niro! The movie is a little long, I'll give you that, but Samuel L. just cracks me up too much!

Re: Top Ten Favorite Movies... - 02/02/04 05:00 AM

People say "Scarface is the best movie ever!" all the time. I hear it all the time, at least. And it's not even close to one of the all time greatest films. The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, Taxi Driver, etc... Those movies are considered "the best." Scarface doesn't rank up there for me. Sure, it's really good -- but one of the best? Not in my eyes.

People NEVER give Jackie Brown the credit it deserves... So how in the blue hell can it be over-rated?

I have to agree with you Anthony. I think Scarface is a perfect example of a film that does not pass the test of time. After 20 years to me it seems to be gaining some what of B movie quality. In another 20 years I see it becoming more of a goof movie with a cult like following. The Soundtrack, The look & feel of the film and even Pacino's over the top performance are not aging well. I compare it to a film like "Rebel Without a Cause". Rebel in it's day was considered a great film. Watch it now it is pretty much a comedy.

Usually when people say Scarface is the best movie of all time, they usually just mean that it's their favorite. I agree that Raging Bull, Goodfllas, etc are considered some of the best movies ever made, whereas Scarface is really a cult classic. As for Jackie Brown, I never said it was overrated. In fact, if anything it's underrated!

Re: Top Ten Favorite Movies... - 02/02/04 06:50 PM

Nah, I hear people saying Scarface is the "best" in terms of quality and actually being the best film there is -- which is a complete pile of horse shit. Scarface is a GOOD movie, but the best? Nope. Therefore, it's over-rated, as I said earlier.

DaigoMickFriend -- right on, I agree. It's just getting to the point where it's gaining a following purely 'cause of it's surrounding.

IrishMan -- I didn't say you said it was over-rated; I was talking to Knocc Out who said Jackie Brown "sucks" and is "over-rated." I agree it's under-rated... How can a movie be over-rated when it's never said to even be good? Jackie Brown is always over-looked by Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. Sure, PF and RD are better films, but Jackie Brown is still amazing and clever.

How can a movie be over-rated when it's never said to even be good? Jackie Brown is always over-looked by Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. Sure, PF and RD are better films, but Jackie Brown is still amazing and clever.
I coudln't agree with you more about Jackie being overlooked by Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and now Kill Bill (which was probably my favorite movie of 2003, besides X2). How about you Anthony, what was your favorite movie of 2003? What's your favorite movie so far for 2004? Mines definately 21 grams! I hope Naomi wins the Oscar and I hope Benicio wins or is even nominated, because he should be! In terms of Scarface, I again agree, it's a GREAT movie, but not the best ever made...but it's my favorite! grin

Re: Top Ten Favorite Movies... - 02/02/04 07:03 PM

2003 would have to be Kill Bill, of course. My favorite director. smile And I think QT did a great job with a new genre. He's used to crime epics such as PF, RD and JB, and his first attempt at a ninja-esque samuri movie was excellent. Clever, witty dialogue we know QT for, excellent story-telling, super-cool characters that seem to blister off the screen... Just all around great.

Of 2004? Probably Mystic River. It's made more of an impact for this year than last, with the Oscars and everything. It's a 2003 film, but as far as impact I'm putting it in my own category of 2004.

I'm going to see 21 Grams this Friday. Can't wait.

Re: Top Ten Favorite Movies... - 02/02/04 10:10 PM

among American "best off" lists you'll find all over, there a couple of films mentioned at the top so often, that it is almost (almost!!) fair to say these films ARE the best ever.

(btw these lists differ mostly in regard to the amount of 'classics' (pre 1960) in the list, like the AFI list who has a lot)

CITIZEN KANE
CASABLANCE
THE GODFATHER
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
GONE WITH THE WIND
VERTIGO
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
THE WIZARD OF OZ

here's the AFI list
http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Screen/6601/

Years with most AFI films = 1939 (5)
Most Represented Directors=Steven Spielberg (5 )
Most Represented Actors= Robert Duvall (6)
Most Represented Actresses=Katherine Hepburn (5)

Color=39
Black and White=61
Silent=3

and quite often as well:
TAXI DRIVER
PSYCHO
APOCALYPSE NOW
SINGIN IN THE RAIN
THE GRADUATE
ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE
ON THE WATERFRONT
SOME LIKE IT HOT
SUNSET BLVD
ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOOS NEST

international films:
8 1/2
BATTLESHIP POTYEMKIN
LA DOLCE VITA
THE SEVEN SAMURAI
PERSONA
METROPOLIS
LA REGLE DU JEU
SUNRISE
RASHOMON
PASSION DE JEANNE D'ARC
BOUTTE DE SOUFFLE

the new top-ten-lists-overall-standings are:

The Godfather: 104
Scarface: 91
The Godfather II: 73
Pulp Fiction: 58
Memento: 44
Goodfellas: 42
Fight Club: 36
Usual Suspects: 25

Scarface is extremely overrated, like Anthony Lombardi said.

It also gets quite old when you have rappers worshipping it as if it were the 21st century bible.

Re: Top Ten Favorite Movies... - 03/06/04 06:17 PM

I'm sorry Anthony, I like Pulp Fiction, but I don't love it. I like Jackie Brown & Kill Bill more for just Tarantino flicks. I LOVE Samuel L. Jackson & Travolta in it, but when he switches to Bruce Willis & Ving Rhames (and I LOVE Bruce Willis) I just start to loss interest in the movie. I don't know why. There's something about the movie that doesn't strick me as great, but that's just me. I'm not saying your wrong or anything like that. What do you love so much about it? For me it's Jules, Jimmy, and The Wolf!

Re: Top Ten Favorite Movies... - 03/06/04 07:07 PM

The Gold Watch story with Butch and Marsellus is actually my favorite part! I just love the unpredictability of it. Everytime I watch the movie, it's like it's for the first time. Every single actor nails his role absolutely perfectly; the story is original, the dialogue is witty and sharp... Everything about the film is incredibly perfect and flawless. In my opinion, anyhow. It's number one on my list of favorites, and definately in the top five for best.

Fantastic list there Thug! smile Almost as juicy as mine. tongue

Mick
Your list isn't that bad, either! You can rarely go wrong with Scorsese, Lynch, Godard, and to a lesser extent, Coppola. I'm not a big Gladiator fan, but it was pretty entertaining.

Mike, I'm so glad to see Greed in somebody else's top 10, and especially at the high spot it is in!

As Zia pointed out, these lists are our favorites and not necessarily "the best". With that in mind, here is my list:

10. Some Came Running - Frank Sinatra teams with Dean Martin in this gritty and stylish story of hypocrisy.

9. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Its John Wayne at his macho best, James Stewart in a typical "do-gooder" role, Vera Miles as the love interest of both men and Lee Marvin at his meanest. Its a western, but its REALLY a love story.

8. The Thing (1951) - A small group of people battle something from out of this world at the North Pole. The dialogue is quick paced and expertly delivered and the music score (by Dmitri Tomkin) adds to the feeling of isolation and freezing cold.

7. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor are electric, and the insight into this family's dysfunction is superb. Raw emotion!

6. The Green Mile - A few wonderful stories wrapped up into one, I can't get enough of this Stephen King story. Michael Clarke Duncan's portrayal of John Coffey was superb!

5. The Day the Earth Stood Still - Superb sci-fi flick "with a message". Wonderful acting and suspense filled.

4. The Godfather - Haunting study of Family and family. Top-notch cast and acting and the story ain't too shabby either.

3. Casablanca - The best love story filmed and its Bogey at his best. What more need be said?

2. King Kong (1933) - Its really a love story ("'twas beauty who killed the beast") and it was way ahead of its time with its effects. The dialogue is dated, but the story is forever.

1. Field of Dreams - Its about baseball, its about redemption and second chances, its about love. Its about my favorite all-time movie, and the ending ALWAYS gets me!!

Re: Top Ten Favorite Movies... - 10/13/04 11:35 PM

That is what makes them special because they have to make the top ten.

Not top 25, 50, 100 or 200 IT IS THE TOP TEN!

Ten prize spots and only ten spots. Not good, better, best.
and like SC said FAVORITE not best.

The way I look at this is to say if I was going away for a long time,to prison say and I could only take ten films with me, which ones would I take with me. lol

That's not the BEST analogy I would give lol

10 favorite movies might be action/drama

10 movies to jail would be SOMETHING ELSE lol
