But I do like the guy on the voice Blake he can sing any kind of music.

Boxcar Willie!!!

I didn't know that "America's Favorite Hobo" was known in England. Willie enjoyed a brief surge in popularity in the early 1980s as a bit of a curiosity when his records were advertised in humorous fashion. Slim Whitman and Nana Mouskori similarly had serious careers, but were seen as humorous novelties in the 80s because of corny tv ads.

Anyway, in 1982 I was attending a wedding reception at a hotel where Boxcar Willie was staying for a local performance. He was walking through the lobby and my cousin Dwight, who was kind of drunk, saw him and shouted, Hey, Boxcar Willie! I'm your biggest fan!" Without missing a beat, slowing down, or even tossing a glance at him, Willie mumbled, "Then blow me."

The story has lasted longer in the family than the marriage that took place earlier that day.

I really like Alan Jackson. He filmed two videos at a bar in Jupiter, Florida called The Square Grouper. One of them with Jimmy Buffett. Anyway, my in-laws live right there in the Jupiter Inlet Colony condos. We go slumming to that place all the time when we visit. Fun place. Here are the videos:

I'm not a country fan. But, I own a DVD of an Austin City Limits performance (2009) by Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel. It's one of the best musical DVDs I own. Absolutely first rate musicianship.

Hate country music. All sounds the same and every song includes the words truck, farm, and beer.

I wouldn't call myself a country music fan, but my favorite country performer is Roy Clark, who is a brilliant musician.

There are so many. I tend to like certain songs and not necessarily their singers. Of course, none can beat Patsy Cline and Hank Williams.

Clark's rendition of "Yesterday When I Was Young" is one of the most poignant songs I've ever heard.

It was good enough for Mickey Mantle's funeral .

Klyd, my old man loved country music and Boxcar Willie was his favourite. When Willie toured England many moons ago my dad dragged me to one of his concerts....twice!!!

is CCR considered country?

Swamp rock. It's rock music, infused with varying amounts of blues, folk and country. CCRis a northern California band that always sounded Southern. The Allman Brothers are another groupthat does Southern Rock, but might have more of a country influence than CCR.

Elvis Presley was a Country Boy, but he's not widely regarded as a Country singer. But if he does fit the bill, it's a no-brainer.

Country has morphed again in recent years. If you have a local FM radio country program today's country is filled with songs that are more pop/rock and country rap; both are quite annoying.

If you have XM radio you can hear today's country; kind of a top 40 of the pop/rock/rap country. I have my radio programmed for Outlaw Country and Willie's Roadhouse. There is also a country movement called "Americana", which is a cross between Outlaw and Roadhouse.

I like Alison Krauss and Union Station. They fall into that Americana category. Alison Krauss is the all-time female Grammy winner. Lucinda Williams, Outlaw. Willie Nelson has some great standards.

It's hard to beat George Strait.

Not sure if Jimmy Buffett is country or just an old drunk, but while driving through the Keys I'll usually leave him on when he's on the radio (which is constantly down there). When in Rome and all that .

Most of country I like is second hand thru rock groups like The Allman Brothers, Richard Thompson or The Doobie Brothers.
Still I like Buddy and Julie Miller, Earl Scruggs, Jerry Reed (though by seventies he had a bit of funk influence which made it much easier to listen to him),and Doc Watson. Basically anything that's got some swing to it.

Ha! Not hardly. The Doobie Brothers crossed over big into the black community when they picked up Michael McDonald and added the soul/gospel influence. Appearances on shows like this also helped.

I remember that episode clearly, Lilo. There was a corny one liner that always cracks me up, silly as it is. But it's not in the clip that you posted. Roger introduces himself and says something like, "I be Roger Thomas. Which Doobie, you be?"

And you know I was just breaking balls. I've always liked the Doobies myself. Especially McDonald. But I AM a middle aged White guy .

Are the Eagles classed as country?

Some of their songs, especially some older ones like "Desperado," Peaceful Easy Feeling," and "Take it Easy" have a definite country sound, and there's no doubt country influenced the band, Don Henley in particular.

They are widely considered to be a rock band though, and are a good example of how different genres overlap in much of rock music.

Well PB, with that line you sure sound like a boy from the Bronx. Jimmy is far from an old drunk and he touches country a bit. Jimmy Buffett is pretty much in a genre all by himself; he's little bit country, reggae, rock, blues, and Carribean. AND, the man's got lots of money. His Margaritaville is an industry all by itself. He's written several books, a movie, a gang of songs and has an Sirus/XM radio station. He's has a pilot's license and flys a seaplane. And if you go to one of his sold out concerts, the audience sings along on every song.

Oh, come on, MC. We've talked about Buffett before. You know I'm a fan .

Funnily enough, the venerable Dolly Parton played to a massive crowd at Glastonbury the other weekend and has become big news here almost overnight. She is all over the radio and news and I caught my daughter singing JOLENE the other day. She had no clue who Dolly was and I had to inform her that the old girl has been warbling for the last 100 years or so.....

My old man loved her and Tammy Wynette. Used to play their records loads when I was a youngster!!

Dolly is very talented lady; singer, song-writer, actress, instrumentalist. AND, she's been married to the same guy for 48 years.

Several of us have enjoyed CW over several decades. I remember it growing up n Pittsburgh, songs such as Crazy by Patsy Kline (I'll never forget the Duz laundry soap commercials with Dolly and Porter). There are so many through those decades and I have to pay homage to the legends such as Hank Williams and Ray Price. But mostly, it's the 70s singers for me. During that decade Patsy Ann and I glided across the floor to Loretta Lynn and Ronnie Milsap ... Madonne! There are so many.

As I said above, I love a lot of these performers. I was running through some videos, though, and I'm pretty sure that if you put all the female country singers on the same stage in their primes and let them battle it out, Juice Newton would be the last girl standing:

Thanks PB. I love that guy. I saw him live way back around 1976 at the Westchester Theater in Tarrytown (its no longer there). He was the opening act for David Bromberg. We were saying, "who is this guy Jimmy Buffett (pronounced bu-fay). This was before Margaritaville was a hit. He was great...and the rest is history.

The Allman brothers are a great band to see live and Happy Birthday!
