Product Notes

Digitally remastered edition of this best-selling collection of tracks from the American rockers. Following the enormous success of the first six Grand Funk Railroad albums, Capitol Records decided that it was time for a summary of the first stage of the band's career and a two-LP Best Of was assembled. The next studio album, Phoenix, would feature keyboardist Craig Frost, who would eventually become the fourth member of the band so this release is comprised of the power trio era hits. Mark, Don & Mel features the classic tracks "Time Machine", "Heartbreaker" and "Paranoid", which received heavy FM and AM radio play back in the day. The album also includes the band's first truly huge Top 5 single, "Footstompin' Music". The closing track is the epic full-length version of "Closer to Home/I'm Your Captain". This release marks the first worldwide legitimate appearance on compact disc and features a new mastering done especially for this release by Grammy Award winning engineer, Vic Anesini. Iconoclassic.

They were the original "Flint-Stones."

As hard as they rocked, I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home, with Mel's great bong-rattling bass line, remains my all-time favorite song from GFR. From that spectacular Shea Stadium show, the loudest rock band in history with Mark in his shirtless glory and Don's competent drumwork driving the rhythm...

Yep, JG, you're positively ancient! tongue

They also did a pretty good cover of Locomotion, I believe it was back in '74 or thereabouts. Quite a bit more rocking than the original by Little Eva from the '60s.

As far as Closer to Home, ahhh... memories, memories. That is, the ones I can remember through the haze... whistle

That is how I remember them. It was a big hit when I was in fifth grade.

Tho I don't have any of their music in my collection, I didn't mind Grand Funk. smile

I really liked their version of "The Locomotion" but I also like the original by Little Eva. smile

I also like "The Locomotion", and "Shinin' On" from that period.

Their Ultimate Hard Rock song for me was "Inside Looking Out".

And I just love the bass line opening to "Black Licorice". Which is followed up very nicely with "The Railroad" on their 1975 live album CAUGHT IN THE ACT.

Mark, Don & Mel 1969-1971, and Caught In The Act are my go to albums for Grand Funk material.
