Giant crocodile captured in the Philippines - 09/06/11 07:11 PM

A monster crocodile of 21 feet (6.4 metres) was captured yesterday in the Philippines. I've studied this animals for a long time now and this is the biggest ever captured, possibly even the biggest ever scientifically documented. They don't grow much larger than this, it's insane. This is the first 20+ feet wild croc that is documented on photo and film. It was even on the evening news here in the Netherlands. I'm pretty excited about it.

Geez, what a nightmare. The Filipinos could do a remake of "Godzilla" with that critter.

Wow, that's a monster!

Not even close, and this is a gator not a crocodile, but here's a pic from April 2010 of a gator that got on our condo grounds in Delray Beach, Florida. What's weird is, we're east of the Intracoastal, where gator sightings are supposed to be less frequent.

But tell that to this little guy:

lol

About 20 years ago, I was at a business meeting at the Mariott Sawgrass Resort in Jacksonville. After the meeting, I went out for a run from the hotel to the beach. My run took me across some vacant areas near a creek. I stopped to, uh, relieve pressure on my bladder. While I was doing so, I spotted fresh croc tracks right nearby. I believe I broke the World Record for the Quarter Mile Dash after that sighting. whistle

Croc or gator?

I took a trip with a friend to the Florida everglades when I was about 18...hiked through the woods and came upon about 4 rather large sleeping gators about 20 feet away. Didn't run, but backed out pretty quickly. Also went canoeing and happened upon a baby gator on a downed tree branch and was right there, until we wondered where the mother was... whistle

Those buggers can move like thirty miles an hour, that's the REALLY scary thing.

They can but only for just a few seconds. They could never outrun a human on land.

I'll take your word for it, but I'd never want to find out firsthand lol.

I can now say with excitement that the crocodile named "Lolong" has been scientifically confirmed by a team of National Geographic as 20 feet 3 inches, which is about 6.2 metres!

This crocodile is now one of only three that have ever been scientifically confirmed as being over 20 feet in length. And from those three specimens this is the only one that has been captured alive. Until recently the only image that was available was that of the skin of a 6.2 meter specimen from Papua New Guinea. It's interesting that these three specimens were all about 6.2 metres.

This is the one of which only the skin was photographed:

And here is a short video about salwater crocodiles which pretty much covers everything you need to know about them in a nutshell:

What makes these animals so succesfull is the way they are able to sustain themselves. They were almost hunted to extinction and by the 1960s it was estimated that there were only a few thousand left in Australia. But in the 1970s they were declared as protected species and since then they made a remarkable comeback. There are now over 150000 in Northern Australia alone.
