Rapture tomorrow?! - 05/20/11 03:33 PM

I certainly hope not. I'm kinda looking forward to seeing THE HANGOVER 2 next weekend.

Believers, skeptics plan for rapture
Preacher’s prediction for May 21 rapture viewed with caution, humor

The Wichita Eagle

On Saturday you could shop, chill at home, do some yard work — or join Jesus in heaven and leave the rest of us behind to suffer torments until the world ends in October. The rapture has been added to Saturday's schedule by radio preacher Harold Camping, an 89-year-old retired civil engineer from Oakland, Calif.

Camping's Family Radio Worldwide has been broadcasting worldwide his prediction that May 21 is Judgment Day. RVs and campers heralding the event have passed through cities around the country, including Wichita, for months.

Camping's prophecy comes from numerological calculations based on his reading of the Bible. His math was off in 1994, the last time he crunched the numbers.

Most religious leaders don't like the way Camping treats the Bible as a math book, claiming it misrepresents Scripture.

Bruce Hays, pastor at Parkview Southern Baptist Church in Wichita, said he believes in the rapture and the end of the world, but he also believes in taking the Scripture literally. And Jesus said nobody knows the date or hour it will happen.

"It's God's timetable," Hays said.

People like Camping do more harm than good to true believers when their predictions fail.

"At the end of the day, Christianity looks like an idiotic faith system. It's branded across the board," Hays said.

Skeptics hope to educate

Groups of atheists and skeptics around the country are planning events for Saturday, including in Wichita.

The Air Capital Skeptics at Wichita State University will hold a Rapture Day Conference from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the CAC Theater on the WSU campus. Organizers expect 200 to 300 people to attend.

The day is not being held to mock rapture believers, nor as a party, they said. There are two serious goals: to educate people on the history of such predictions and the dangers they present, and to let other skeptics and nonbelievers who may feel stranded in the Bible Belt know they are not alone.

Andrew Juby, one of the organizers, noted that some believers of Camping's prophecy around the country have disrupted their lives and the lives of their children to prepare for Saturday.

Sean Gillespie, president of Air Capital Skeptics, said education about such claims is important to head off future claims.

"We've seen Jonestown, we've seen Waco, we've seen Heaven's Gate. These things typically don't end well," he said.

Reaction to the event, which will include six national and local speakers, has been mixed on campus, Juby said.

He printed 300 fliers about the conference to post around campus, and most have been torn down repeatedly, he said.

Mocking, preparing for the event

Nationally, Camping's prediction is being mocked.

A Facebook page titled "Post rapture looting" offers this invitation: "When everyone is gone and god's not looking, we need to pick up some sweet stereo equipment and maybe some new furniture for the mansion we're going to squat in."

By Wednesday afternoon, more than 175,000 people indicated they would be "attending" the "public event."

An atheist from New Hampshire, Bart Centre, decided to make some money on the prophecy. He has offered rapture believers an insurance plan for the pets they leave behind. For a fee of $135, Centre and some of his fellow nonbelievers will take responsibility for the abandoned animals.

Camping's followers ignore the nonbelievers and prepare for the event. Marie Exley, who left her home in Colorado last year to join Family Radio's effort to publicize the message, just returned from a lengthy overseas trip that included stops in the Middle East. She said billboards have gone up in Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

"I decided to spend the last few days with my immediate family and fellow believers," Exley said. "Things started getting more risky in the Middle East when Judgment Day started making the news."

Signs of disaster?

Hays and other religious leaders in Wichita who believe in the rapture said signs are growing that it's going to happen, but probably not by Saturday.

Jesus compared the end of the world to birth pains, when the Earth suffers disasters such as earthquakes, pestilence and famines that grow in numbers and intensity as the end nears, they said.

Although more disasters than usual seem to have occurred in recent times, the intensity isn't there yet, Hays said.

"For anybody's who's wanting to pay attention, there's not going to be any question," Hays said.

Meanwhile, Camping's predictions discredit true believers.

"If in our lifetimes more of these things do begin to happen, and I stand up and say, 'It's here,' who's going to believe you?" Hays said.

Dade Ronan, associate pastor at Calvary Chapel in Wichita, also believes in the literal return of Jesus to take believers to heaven.

But, he said, "We do not believe in setting a date. We just have the hope he is going to come, and we persevere until that time."

Because predicting a date contradicts what Jesus said, someone like Camping is a false teacher, Ronan said. In the old days, he'd be stoned to death.

"But ultimately in America he has a right to free speech," Ronan said.

Marty Freeman, senior pastor at Believers Tabernacle in Wichita, also believes the rapture will happen at some point, but it's something that's not to be feared, he said.

"My concern is it (Camping's prophecy) portrays God as some sort of big bogey man," Freeman said. "If we look at the Scriptures as a whole, God is a loving father. He's trying to draw people into a relationship with him."

Camping's May 21 prediction is another example of "fringe wackos that get a lot of attention for their extreme views," Freeman said.

"On May 22," he said, "nobody's going to remember it."

Do we know what time of day this will occur? Should I plan on NOT doing my workout? Will I have time to get my hair trimmed? lol

On the news this morning they were giving a local news story covering some local event. The news guy was flipping a burger and the newscaster said to him, "oh BBQing hu?" The reporter said, "well, yea first of all we're hungry and secondly tomorrow's the rapture and we want to get one last BBQ in." lol

Rapture?

From what I understand, it's really no big deal anymore. I mean, the days of wearing an uncomfortable truss are mostly behind us; modern surgical techniques are minimally invasive and can be done on an outpatient basis. You'll be home the same day.

Oh, wait a minute.....

Sorry.....

Never mind. whistle

Tomorrow's my brother's birthday. He's celebrating with his friends tonight and with our family tomorrow, and now I'm starting to wonder if he's having his "real" fun ahead of time... just in case. lol

I've come across a bunch of stuff online about the tricks people want to pull, like leaving old clothes around town, with a pair of shoes matched to each "missing" person. As for the pet insurance, don't all dogs go to heaven? My cats might need to be taken care of, though. wink

Re: Rapture tomorrow?! - 05/21/11 02:14 AM

Per CNN here are some "end of the world" songs. smile

Doomsday hits: An end of the world soundtrack

So many songs, so little time.

To hear it from the followers of the Christian broadcasting network Family Radio, Saturday will mark the beginning of the end. Those who’ve been selected for salvation will move on to heaven, but the rest will experience unspeakable suffering until the world ends on October 21.

With all this doomsday talk, we at CNN have been contemplating our favorite end-of-the-world songs - music to listen to as the world falls apart, if you will. Here is our top 10 list, to get the soundtrack rolling:

“Eve of Destruction” by Barry McGuire

“It’s the End of the World” by REM

“Until the End of Time” by 2Pac

“The End” by The Doors

“Until the End of the World” by U2

“Waiting for the End of the World” by Elvis Costello

“Doomsday Clock” by Smashing Pumpkins

“Apocalypse Please” by Muse

“The End of the World” by Skeeter Davis

“The Man Comes Around” by Johnny Cash

What hits would you add to the mix?

As far as movies, I suppose we could watch "End Of Days" in honor of Arni. lol

P.S. Oh, and just as I posted this I thought of a great one that nobody will remember........

"Goodbye Cruel World"......James Darren smile

I saw an interview with Crackpot the other night on TV. In it he said that the end will happen at 6:00pm local time, wherever you happen to be. Meaning that when the clock strikes six - poof! Everything will not end for everyone all at once, due to different time zones.

Then the interviewer asked him what happens if the world doesn't end, if the rapture doesn't happen - he ignored the question and said very emphatically, "It will happen!"

What a jackass.

Speaking of Hangover II, Zack G. was on Real Time last night and Bill Maher asked what his schedule was like the next few days. Zack says, (loosely) "well I am suppose to be promoting my movie, but with the rapture coming I guess that's pretty much moot." lol (Btw, I only saw the first Hangover on HBO thinking it wouldn't be that good, but I thought it was hilarious. Don't know about the 2nd though).

The Biblical evidence is too overwhelming and specific to be wrong. Christ's people can look with great confidence to this date because God promises His "beloved" He will not come upon them as a thief in the night.

God in His mercy has revealed the vital information needed to know the day. Judgment Day on May 21, 2011 will occur because the bible declares it. Anyone whom God has not saved will arrive at that day with no hope for salvation. God warns simply the "door will be shut."

The sad thing is how many weak-minded, gullible people will actually believe this ridiculous garbage.

Here in Brooklyn, I know of a friend of a friend who is actually in seclusion because the world didn't end and he's still here! But again, he is a very emotionally disturbed person. Seriously.

And, of course, the media is partially to blame for giving Howard Crackpot national exposure. This fool is just going to keep on keeping on with his insane drivel until he croaks! (Since he's quite up there in years, I suggest that - for strictly chronological reasons - he's a lot closer to being "raptured" than most of us!)

So, the world didn't end this time? My calculations were off - you've all got a few more months. But it will absolutely, positively end next time! Oh, wait - I blew it again? Don't go away, we're all gonna definitely get raptured the next time! Just a few more months, folks, and then KA-BOOM!

It's like that old question: If a tree falls in a forest and there's no one there to hear it - does it make any sound? Well, for me, Howard Crackpot is that tree in the forest. The press should simply stop covering him. No one there, no noise. Hopefully.

Re: Rapture tomorrow?! - 05/25/11 05:31 PM

No, what's truly sad is the bad name this guy gives to Christianity and the truth of the Gospel. NORMAL Evangelicals believe in an Apocalypse, but not all believe in a rapture. Among those who do believe in it, there are even various schools of thought as to what point in the Great Tribulation it will occur: Pre-Tribulation (the most popular, and obviously this guy's take), Mid-Trib, and Post-Trib. But even among all that disagreement, all NORMAL Evangelicals will tell you plainly what Scripture says, ""But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone."--Matt. 24:36. [I myself, believe in the Second Coming (that's different from the Rapture) and an Apocalypse, but not in the Rapture; ergo, I believe Mt. 24:36 refers to the Second Coming of Messiah.]

The whole point is not predicting whether there's a Rapture, when it will be, etc.; but rather, whenever the End comes (and I believe it will), BE WATCHFUL and BE READY. This guy's fiasco does nothing but make believers look like mindless morons and cause everyone to make light of a day that will inevitably come (the Apocalypse). Sad. It doesn't offend me personally, because "but for the grace of God go I"; but it makes me sad for the countless who don't believe at all, and, thanks to people like him, never will. frown

I think most of us who are looking at this from a neutral standpoint and try very hard to be critical thinkers can see very clearly that believers have looked like mindless morons since the beginning of faith. All you gotta do is look at history. The church has been shown time and again, that it can't compete with science. It can't compete with facts. Thankfully, due to the internet and all the information we now have at our fingertips, more and more people are starting to sway away from this nonsense. I say this with love, because these believers have entertained me more than Hollywood has and even during some of my darker days, they helped put a smile on my face. So, for that, I thank them very much.

Re: Rapture tomorrow?! - 05/25/11 07:01 PM

It has been a roller coaster with me, regarding my faith (or lack thereof). On one hand, I absolutely, positively, want to believe that there is a God, a Heaven, a Hell...you know...SOMETHING other than this life. I WANT to believe that...but my scientific mind will not allow it. I've danced back and forth between complete atheism and agnosticism over the past few years.

When I'm feeling agnostic, my beliefs tell me that if there IS a God out there, He isn't some omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent, omnicompetent deity. Omnibenevolence brings up the philosophical "problem with evil." I believe that some evil is necessary in order for people to actually witness good things, as well as commit true acts of courage and kindness, and show compassion. Moral and natural evils MAY BE necessary for good to exist in the world, but what about gratuitous evil? Gratuitous evil can be defined as "unnecessary pain" or "pain for no conceivable reason." Some say that gratuitous evil is impossible to differentiate from regular ol' moral evil. I'd argue that the Holocaust was a gratuitously evil event. Was it REALLY necessary for God to allow 6 million (maybe MORE) Jews to be killed to make a point? To quote the famous philosopher David Hume: "Is He (God) willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then He is impotent. Is He able but not willing? Then He is malevolent. Is He both able and willing? Whence then evil?"
The evidential problem with evil states: 1) If God exists, then there is no gratuitous evil; 2) It is likely that there are instances of gratuitous evil; 3) Therefore, it is likely that no God exists.

That is about as far into the philosophical side as I care to go at the moment. I guess the point I am trying to make is that this isn't something I take lightly. I have come to my own conclusions based off of years of independent research and soul searching. And these are not conclusions that I have come to easily. My lack of belief has been a spiritual tug-of-war, and it has been painful. But I have gotten to a point now where I am comfortable with my beliefs (or lack thereof), and am willing (and able) to back them up if I have to. Always respectfully, of course.

I respect those who believe in God, Heaven, and all that. Religion and spirituality do many good things for many people. I don't respect people like Harold Camping, who seemingly only want to take your money and scare the shit out of everybody. I don't respect the ones that try to shove it down my throat. We have an infestation of Mormons here in Southern California who love to interrupt you while you're eating dinner. Hell, I'll be on campus grabbing a quick bite before my next class, and they'll just plop their pompous asses down right beside me and start preaching. I tell them I don't believe, I'd like to be left alone as I only have 15 minutes before my next class...but they continue. So usually I just tell them to go to Hell, which always gets me a nice reaction. smile

Sorry for the rant. Just wanted to give a little insight into the atheistic/agnostic side of things. grin

That's not a rant my man. You just made an intelligent input here. You're a man with an open mind and that's exactly what we need more of. You're asking all the right questions regarding this matter. Sadly, religion doesn't want us to ask these type of questions. You're just supposed to have blind faith lol.

I bet he made money hand over fist.

Atheist Creates Jobs Saving Pets After "The Rapture"

Quote:
For a mere $135, the faithful can be assured that Centre or one of his 44 contractors in 26 states, will drive to your home within 24 hours, collect your dog, cat, bird, rabbit or small caged mammal, and adopt it. There's a $20 charge for each additional animal, and even horses, camels, llamas and donkeys will be taken care of if you live in New Hampshire, Vermont, Idaho or Montana.

Re: Rapture tomorrow?! - 05/26/11 05:54 PM

The phrase "blind faith" is redundant. Faith is believing in something despite the fact that you can't see it or touch it. In order to be faith, it must be blind.

People too often confuse faith and religion. Religion is organized and man-made. Faith comes from your mind, heart and soul. They are completely different things.

X, it's normal to have doubts. If you've read the bible, even Jesus had doubts. Remember Gethsemane? Remember when He asked His Father to take the cup away??

Re: Rapture tomorrow?! - 05/26/11 06:43 PM

I have no idea if there is a god or not. I think the chances are exceptionally slim. No matter how I look at it, it just doesn't make sense to me. But, I don't claim to know anything. I know as little as you people do. To quote my good friend, Bill Maher, "I preach the gospel of I don't know."

Yeah and I've noticed a few people in here claim to know an awful lot about things. Sadly, the more you talk to them, the more you see how little they know. So, in reality, they know nothing. That's not their biggest problems though. It's the fact they aren't aware of it lol. I know that I know nothing.

Re: Rapture tomorrow?! - 05/27/11 04:25 PM

Just like Vinnie said, I don't know whether there is a God or not. However, I find it highly unlikely that there is a God. To me, the idea of an omnicompetent Creator is illogical at best. For example, it is impossible to have an ALL KNOWING (omniscient) God if you believe in free will, not to mention that God can't be the creator of knowledge since God would have to KNOW how to create knowledge, and you can't KNOW how to do ANYTHING without KNOWLEDGE. It is impossible to have an ALL GOOD (omnibenevolent) God if gratuitous evil exists. As far as omnipotence (all powerful) goes, there's an old philosophical problem that can pretty much dispel the notion of an all powerful God: Could God create a rock that is too heavy for even HE to lift? If God cannot LIFT this rock, then He is not all-powerful. If God cannot CREATE this rock, then He is not all powerful.

Also, pretty much anything in the Bible can be explained scientifically, and anything that can't be explained scientifically will be one day. Until then, however, most people who are religious use the Gap Theory, meaning that whatever science CAN'T explain, they fill in the gap with "God."

At the end of the day, none of us will REALLY know if there's a God, Heaven, or Hell until we die.

Re: Rapture tomorrow?! - 05/27/11 05:34 PM

The Bible and science will never agree. Science is constantly changing, "updating" itself; the Bible is unchanging (albeit a "living," timeless Book). But while the existence of God can never be proven NOR disproven, theories in science frequently are either proven or disproven (e.g., "global warming").
As Sicilian Babe, said, faith and religion are two different things. IMHO, it takes more faith to not believe in a God than to believe in Him. But I condemn no one for their views, even atheists. God reaches us when He reaches us, and He reaches us "where we're at."

Re: Rapture tomorrow?! - 05/27/11 06:26 PM

I wouldn't say that science changes so much as it evolves. The Bible, on the other hand, stays the same. But isn't that true of most fine literature?

Hey, say what you will about the morality of all this, but the bottom line is Harold Camping is a genius. I read an article a while back that stated between 2005 and 2009, his church received donations in excess of $80 millon!! Anyone gullible enough to believe his nonsense deserves to lose their money, in my most humble of opinions.
