Mississippi GOP want to ban Interracial Marriage? - 04/08/11 03:15 PM

It should be noted, this poll was taken by the Democratic-leaning PPP polling firm, but none the less the result is still sadly surprising in 2011. Especially considering said issue was deemed legal by the Supreme Court some 50 years ago.

(and for the record, Fuck Mississippi. The only good thing we Tennesseeans see from that traditionally dysfunctional state is that they keep us from being dead last in Education in the nation.)

46 Percent of Mississippi Republicans Want Interracial Marriage Banned

Quote:
A whopping 46 percent of likely GOP primary voters said they think interracial marriage should be illegal, while only 40 percent said they think it should be allowed. Another 14 percent said they were unsure.

It was only 45 years ago that Mississippi legalized interracial marriage, and this poll indicates it continues to be a controversial subject.

And heads up for '12 primaries in that state?

Quote:
The PPP poll also revealed that Palin has more support among voters who believe interracial marriage should be illegal than among those who are OK with it. Mitt Romney's numbers reveal just the opposite. He has a higher favorability among Mississippi Republicans who want interracial marriage to remain legal.

It's not surprising that the south is still immersed in a culture of racial animus and discriminatory state of mind. Remember this from 2009:

"Keith Bardwell, a white justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish [Louisiana], refused to issue a license or marry Beth Humphrey, who is white and Terence McKay, who is black."

Memphis is a stone's throw from NE Mississippi. While I won't lump all my fellow Southerners from there in the "ignorant" category, I will admit there are those whose mindset is still in the '50s...maybe even the 1850s! I think that number's a little exaggerated, though, but I could be wrong. And, ashamedly, I confess there are those here in Memphis who still have that mindset. But you have to take into account that our neck of the woods is probably the only place in the U.S. where generations are brought up with that bias (sad, but true). It'll take more future generations to get it exorcised...and even then, there will always be racism (on BOTH sides). Personally, I've always thought it stupid; I mean, a person cannot help what color skin he/she is born with...and why is that a basis for hatred anyway? Go figure.
