What have you stumbled upon?

What have you stumbled upon? - 05/28/10 04:31 AM

On the world wide web, that is.

My friend told me about this site:
http://www.stumbleupon.com/

Based on your interests, it'll take you to a random site, and you can continue "stumbling" to more beyond it, saving favorites as you go!

----

And have we ever had a thread about miscellaneous sites that we've come across? I've started saving my favorites in a bookmark folder, so here are some good ones to check out:

1000 Awesome Things
"1000 Awesome Things is just a time-ticking countdown of 1000 awesome things. Launched June, 2008 and updated every weekday. Published as The Book of Awesome in April, 2010."

Awkward Family Photos
"Childhood friends Mike and Doug began the blog after Mike saw an awkward vacation photo hung in his parents’ house. Realizing there were probably plenty of other people out there with their own awkward family images, the two friends decided to create a friendly place where everyone could come together and share their uncomfortable family moments. Thus, AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com was launched."

Not Always Right

Passive Aggressive Notes

PostSecret
[People mail in their secrets on postcards, and they're anonymously posted - new ones every Sunday.]

Raptitude
"Raptitude is a blog for getting better at being human. I see being human as a skillset — something you can get better at if you take it upon yourself to do so. You can learn to temper rotten moods, shed your insecurities, shore up your weak points and sharpen your strong ones. Human minds and bodies are complicated vehicles for which there is no manual and no training, but we can learn to drive them a hell of a lot better than we often do, if only we make a point of it."

Haha! Glad you two are wasting time, too. I seriously relied on my entire folder of favorites as my distraction source anytime I felt like procrastinating during the school year, even though I knew I should be doing work. lol

Yogi, I sure didn't expect you to give that type of answer to my "stumble upon" question... tongue

Interesting Gina. I went to Stumble Upon and found myself browsing quite a bit; Awkward photos is funny. So many different topics. I'll continue to check more out in my spare time.

Thanks for posting. smile

Some of you may already be aware of this site, but if not it is really cool. It's http://www.lotview.net. It consists of ground level pictures of what I suppose is just about every city in the country.

I went to the house I grew up in and my grade school Corpus Christi. I also checked out Vito's house. You can move the picture up and down a street and rotate it to see what's across the street. Give it a try.

Pretty cool, Oli. Thanks for sharing. My street isn't on there yet. They go right to my corner, but that's it.

Thanks Oli. My house in Ohio and VA show aerial views.

My sister and I spent about an hour on the phone today going up and down our old street looking at all the houses and trying to remember who lived where and talking about our neighbors. How the street has changed. It all seemed so much bigger when we were kids.

Alright guys and gals, who wants to waste some time?!

Lunchtimers
This one is awesome. You can put together a jigsaw puzzle, working with random people on the Internet as you go! It's so fun - you have no idea who they are, but everyone cooperates and you end up with a complete puzzle!

Be Funky
"Choose from our constantly growing library of photo effects to turn your ordinary photos into extraordinary art with virtually no effort."
(Might have "watermark" or logo, but still cool!)

Totally Looks Like
Some are pretty goofy, but others quite accurate - all entertaining.

Nintendo Games
You can actually play classic Nintendo games online! I tried Mario Bros., and it's not quite the same as with the controller...but even then, wow!

Re: What have you stumbled upon? - 06/27/10 02:47 PM

Gi, my daughter knows the Nintendo site and gives it a thumbs up. I immediately went on befunky.com and it's so cool! Thanks for sharing.

The "Totally Looks Like"...Keith Richards is hilarious lol and Brendon Frasier's picture. Ha ha ha. Where do you find these sites Gina? I'll have to check the others.

SB, I always wished I could make photos look like that, with those effects, and the site's so simple that I can't screw it up!

TIS, it takes a special knack to find such superb ways to procrastinate online! wink lol Actually, my friend sent me a link to a list that someone had compiled, and these were a few of my favorites.

I'm so annoyed...twice now, I've been "banned for two games" from the jigsaw puzzles, having not even done anything that would deserve a ban. And now it won't let me back! frown

I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways...

The often-quaint world of Archie Comics is set to become a lot more diverse this week. “Veronica” #202, on sale at comic book shops Wednesday, marks the debut of Kevin Keller, the first openly gay character in the publisher’s 71-year history.

Kevin’s introduction is just one of several progressive moves this year from a company whose comics have historically been distinguished for their timeless quality. Earlier this year, Archie Comics depicted a rare-for-the-publisher interracial relationship — between flagship character Archie and Josie and the Pussycats band member Valerie — plus released timely parodies of megapopular media franchises “Jersey Shore” and “Twilight.”

I know we have a lot of history buffs here, and another member of these boards actually recomended a site to me the other week and I must say it is one of the most informed and active I've seen on the web.

Good ones, LN! Thanks. I've had the TV Tropes one bookmarked but only venture over there when I know I've got a lot of free time to use up.. it's like an Internet black hole because of how addictive it is!

The husband vs. wife site was a new one to me, and I enjoyed getting to read through and feel like the decision-maker in so many arguments. lol
