Windows 7 - 10/23/09 03:25 AM

OK. Who went out and bought Windows 7 today? I'm awaiting 2 copies. One was a free upgrade on a computer I bought a couple of months ago, and another I pre-ordered on Amazon when it was $49 instead of $119.

Yes, but it won't take much to be better than Vista.

I still need to hear that it's better than XP, and then I will still wait until I purchase a new desk- or laptop (it is still Microsoft, after all)...

I have no problem with XP. I still have it on 2 of my computers, and will not be upgrading them. I'm only upgrading my Vista systems. The only thing XP really lacks is "eye candy". Otherwise it does everything pretty well. I'm assuming "7" will be great. I ran the beta for 6 months, and even in beta form it was much better than Vista.

The LAST thing I want/need is "eye candy" ... hell, all my XP settings are "classic" at the MOST. Blue background is all I need. Don't need B.S. taking up resources for no reason wink

If that's the case, you should stay with XP as long as you can. What it does, it does well. The only issues will be when MS stops updating it every month, and when newer software won't run on it.

I pre-ordered 7 and went to download today........an hour passed and it was 75% downloaded. I went back and hour later and my computer restarted back at Vista. What happened? I don't know. I tried to download again and got one of those innane explorer messages.....something like "you are no longer a citizen of this planet". I hate fuckin' computers. I'll probably get billed for three downloads. Load this! mad

Re: Windows 7 - 10/28/09 03:12 AM

I upgraded one system, and I'm waiting to get the free disk to upgrade the 2nd, since god only knows if I'll ever receive it.

...I want to buy a new desktop, but I don't know if my wife would kill me. It would be computer #6 in my house. lol

Jeez... if your luck is that bad, then certainly do not press CTRL-ALT-DEL!! tongue (Actually, it's pretty idiot-proof since XP ... I won't say anything more lol ;))

I can get Windows 7 for $19 through my school. Should I go for it or wait first to see what experience plenty of others have with it.

I would. But I've been playing around with it since beta.

Re: Windows 7 - 10/29/09 04:41 PM

The fun continues. Rather than download, I waited for my disk which arrived in the mail Tuesday. I attempted to load. After a few minutes and some system/disk checking I got a message that said there was a conflict with Kaspersky Anti-Virus.....uninstall the program. Well, I don't recall ever having Kaspersky, so I went to the Control Panel, the Uninstall feature and .... no Kaspersky. After calls to Microsoft and reading forums and looking for solutions....no F'N Windows 7 on my computer. My Verizon Security Suite had instructions for a "Conflict Detector" and Kaspersky was listed as a potential, but it didn't work. Word has it that it is in the registry somewhere ....to be continued.

Re: Windows 7 - 11/04/09 01:36 AM

We found the culprit. A Kaspersky file in the \system32\ folders ....klif.sys. BUT apparently its part of the Verizon Security Suite, which will not be compatible with Windows 7 until mid-November. I think its time to kiss Verizon Security Suite goodbye.

I installed the 64-bit beta version on a homebuilt PC I was working on this summer. Really, really like it. Seems to take the best parts of XP and Vista, and turns it into a nice, quick-acting package. Only problem I have is software being incompatible with 64-bit, but that's not Windows fault necessary, but the nature of 64-bit OS's in general.

Just installed 7. PC seems to run slower overall. I'll tweak it later. I'm still navigating its features. Not bad though for $30 though.

i initially had the x64 version running at home but cisco don't make a x64 vpn client (only anywhere connect) so it was half useless for me. frown (so i sold my pc and bought another mac! wink ). however at work i'm using x86 windows 7 and it's great. on an almost 2 year old notebook with 2gb of ram it flies with all of the visual candy on. i'd recommend it to anyone who wants to upgrade. however i tend to use mostly pretty standard software, so conflicts may arise if you have legacy stuff.

I can't really judge because I haven't tried it yet; but, everything "flies" when you first install it after reformatting. Let me know your impressions a year from now. wink

I use Office 2000 on my Toshiba laptop running under Windows XP. I'm planning to buy a new laptop with Windows 7. Does anyone know if it'll run Office 2000? Or, if I upgrade to a new version of Office, will my Office 2000 files load without problems? confused

Re: Windows 7 - 11/22/09 03:29 AM

TB, everything that I've read about 7 states that it will run Office 2000. I also have Word 2003 and it runs it fine.

yeah, good point. however on my work machine i tend to try and keep a pretty lean ship, not install anything that's unneeded etc. i've also (over the years) reinstalled my machines once every 6 months or so, which keeps everything nice.

i'm with olivant - i can see no reason why it shouldn't run office 200 fine.

The only problem I have is with my Canon printer. It doesn't communicate properly, but the printer works. I downloaded the most recent driver, still not right. I haven't had the time to dig into it. Basically Windows 7 runs fine; faster. I like the Libraries feature and some of the little improvements to manage files and folders.

does canon have a vista or windows 7 specific driver for your printer? if it's an older printer they may not have released one.
