LINCOLN vs. OBAMA - 04/17/09 03:45 PM

Could somebody please pass this along to our 44th President, who wants everybody to liken him to our 16th President:

" You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift."
" You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong."

" You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer."

" You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred."

" You cannot help the poor by destroying th rich."

" You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn."

" You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence."

" You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."

ALL QUOTES ABOVE BY ABRAHAM LINCOLN

Nice quotes, but Lincoln never said any of this. Please re-check your source.

Oh and AppleonYa, welcome back to BB.Net, though like Michael Jackson's last album.....rather disapointing launch.

But hey you'll do better next time, and bring Bubbles too!

Don't forget - Kennedy was shot in a Lincoln and Lincoln was shot in the FORD theater. They both had VPs named Johnson! Both Mary Todd Lincoln and Jackie Kennedy lost a child in the White House. They were both killed by men with three names who were themselves killed afterwards!

Oh, sorry, wrong presidents.

Yes. Evelyn Lincoln was Kennedy's secretary.

Don't forget that Lincoln's assassin shot him from a theatre and ran to hide in a warehouse while Kennedy's assassin shot him from a warehouse and hid in a theatre.

Interesting to list any likenesses between Obama/Lincoln. Off the top of my head, without looking anything up:

1. Both from Illinois (although born in other states)
2. Both took oath of office on the same bible
3. Both are tall tongue (anyone know actual heights. Lincoln was very tall I believe)

Ok, that's all I can think of this early. Can anyone else think of likenesses. I'm guessing there is much more.

Both were lawyers and both served in the Illinois state legislature.

Lincoln, by the way, was our tallest president at 6'4". That height in the 1850s was as common as 6'8-9" would be today. When he ran against and beat George McClellan in 1864, it marked the largest height differential between presidential candidates. Bush towered over Dukakis, and made a point not to allow Dukakis to escape his presence too quickly before and after debates.
The next tallest president was Lyndon Johnson, who at 6'3" was half an inch taller than Thomas Jefferson and Bill Clinton. Presidents, who were 6'2", are Bush (H.W.), Arthur, FDR and Washington. They were half an inch taller than Obama and Reagan.

Also, Michelle Obama is the second tallest first lady, less than an inch behindElanor Roosevelt, who many believe is the greatest first lady.

Re: LINCOLN vs. OBAMA - 04/18/09 04:47 PM

I certainly never knew that Eleanor Roosevelt was tall! That must have really been difficult to hide, too, since they mostly showed FDR sitting down. Since there are so few videos, and mostly stills that I've seen of her, I never realized Eleanor was that tall.

And she truly was a great lady.

James Madison, The Father of our Constitution, was the shortest (5'4") and the lightest, but he may have been the brightest. wink William Henry Harrison and Martin Van Buren were only 2 inches taller. I think the shortest of the 20th century was Jimmy Carter.

I give the honor of brightest to Thomas Jefferson.

John Kennedy hosted a state dinner after taking office and had invited the brightest "brains" from around the world. There were about 50 living Nobel Prize winners plus artists like Pablo Picasso, Pablo Casals, Robert Frost and Isaac Stern. Kennedy went on to address the crowd and said, "the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone".

I feel so enlightened now. It's all making sense. If Obama had an apostrophe after the "O" he could have been an Irishman and if Lincoln was shorter, Johnny Booth would have missed.

You didn't know that SC? Brit citizens were always allowed to vote in U.S. elections. I believe that it was a deal that was made at the conclusion of the Revolutionary war.

They now even allow Aussies citizens, South African citizens, Italian citizens, and Middle Eastern citizens to vote in US elections!

Thousands of non-citizens, especially Brits, are registered to vote in some states, and tens if not hundreds of thousands in total may be present on the voter rolls nationwide. These numbers are significant: Local elections are often decided by only a handful of votes, and now even INTERnational USA elections are being held. There is now legislation being introduced which would allow citizens of Iraq to vote in U.S. Elections!

Considering how they all do some bastardly things, no I dont think it matters that much of a difference in the morality department.

To put it another way, Clinton the Baptist regularly went to church while President.

There is actually doubt about whether Lincoln was a Christian. He frequently attended Presbyterian services with his family. He also was fond of the Bible, but there is debate as to whether he believed in the divinity of Christ. There is virtually no doubt that he believed in God though.

There were several 19th century presidents that were nondenominational. Obama is the first president without a particular religious affiliation since Rutherford B. Hayes. I wonder if Hayes had a Rev. Wright he had to run from?

The most common religious affiliation among US presidents belongs to the Episcopalians, the last of whom was George H.W. Bush.
