To all those celebrating - have a joyous holiday! Hopefully you'll be surrounded by family and friends and lots of gelt.
I too extend my best wishes to those celebrating. Have a happy holiday season.
TIS
When my daughter was 6, we moved into our current house. One night, around this time of year, she asked if anyone in our family was Jewish. I told her that nobody was, and asked her why she wanted to know.
She explained that in our old house, we lived across the street from Michael, whose mother was Jewish and father was Catholic, so he celebrated both Christmas and Chanukah. When we moved to this house, we moved next to Jonathan, whose mother was Catholic and his father was Jewish, and he celebrated both holidays.
She, on the other hand, felt totally robbed in the gift department because we had no Jewish relatives. When my mom told the story at her senior center, one of the Jewish members brought each of the girls a little bag of gelt. She ran around the house yelling, "I got a Chanukah present!!" I never saw a happier freaking kid in my life.

Happy Chanukah, Hannachah, Han-nah-kah......my apologies, I would never win a spelling bee on that one.

gelt=money (I didn't know it until today)
gelt=money (I didn't know it until today)
Is it? So used in a sentence one could say, "I wish I had more gelt in the bank."
I never heard of gelt either.
