Great title for the thread. "Estimated" is the way it should be. If anyone ever found their top ten and settled with it, then they don't listen to anything new.

In the order I thought of them, then; I'd love it if people downloaded and listened to these:

"May Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door" by Mogwai.
"Imagination Parts 1 & 2" by Grooverider.
"Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain" by DJ Shadow.
"Sara" by Bob Dylan.
"Pyramind Song" by Radiohead.
"54 Cymru Beats" by Aphex Twin.
"Two Hearts in 3/4 Time" by The Avalanches.
"Like Hearts Swelling" by Polmo Polpo.
"Amo Bishop Roden" by Boards of Canada.
"Remind Me" by Röyksopp.

Cooooooooool, I'll download and listen to the ones I haven't heard. I'd expect the same from you, except you listen to music by album, so I shouldn't get my hopes up. \:\(

Mike, tradition's overrated. \:\)

DVC, I'd only heard Dylan's number from your list; my favourite among the new is The Stooges'.

Anyway, my list has changed already.

Re: DVC's estimated top 10 songs of all time - 11/06/07 03:08 PM

I think its almost impossible for anybody to have a definitive top 10 but ive thought about mine and here they are..

Elvis-American Trilogy
Oasis- Whatever
Beatles-Day in the life
Elvis-Suspicious Minds
Bob Dylan-Changeing Of Guard
Bob Dylan-Hurricaine
RHCP-Don't Stop
Rolling Stones-Paint it black
Beatles-Rocky Raccoon
Ray Charles-I cant stop loving you

For me these kind of list are always hard to do as my mind goes blank when doing the list.

The guitar riff in that song is insane.

"Remind Me" by Royksopp is incredible, by the way. I didn't like that Mogwai one though. I think post-rock was just a phase for me; I can't stand it anymore.

Re: DVC's estimated top 10 songs of all time - 11/07/07 04:52 AM

And everywhere I go
there's always something to remind me
of another place and time
Where love that travelled far had found me

This song is absolutely wonderful.

Untrue. Baseless tradition with no purpose is overrated.

Those songs I've listed are songs that have something that most songs now-a-days lack: a heart and feelings and truth. I listed some alternatives that wouldn't have been mentioned on this list because they've earned mention and have stood the test of time. That's the mark of a truly great work of art, no? And if it remains true to us, then all the better.

I admire and highly regard the works of many more contemporary artists and groups like The Beatles or Pink Floyd or Bob Dylan or the Stones. They're important, all of them. That said, to me, tradition isn't overrated if it's still relevant to the times: love, loss, pain, disapointment and truth will always be relevant.

I was only kidding, Mike.

But for what it's worth, you're talking about pop music alone. That's fine, of course, but I must emphatically disagree with the notion that songs these days lack something that the past didn't.

Well, I could also mention classical pieces.

Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Debbusy and men of that era intrest me the most and of course Copeland, Gershwin and Stravinsky and Samuel Barber.

This is really a very hard question to answer. \:\/ I don't think it's possible, at least for me. I have so many favorites. Classic/Rock has always near/dear to me, but there are other styles, songs, singers that have had wonderful songs, I don't think I could possible pick even 100 let alone 10. I think I'd be doing a lot of shuffling around as I remember songs that I forgot to include on my list.

Re: DVC's estimated top 10 songs of all time - 01/05/08 10:13 PM

If I really had to compile a list, it'd look something like this, in absolutely no order, and with a great expectation that it will change and evolve over time, just like any sort of categorization of exceptional art.

Here we go:

"Heroin" by The Velvet Underground (1967)
"Svefn-G-Englar" by Sigur Rós (2000)
"Talk Show Host" by Radiohead (1996)
"Bold as Love" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience (1968)
"Echoes" by Pink Floyd (1971)
"Peacebone" by Animal Collective (2007)
"Sir Psycho Sexy" - Red Hot Chili Peppers (1991)
"My Horse Must Lose" by The Sound of Animals Fighting (2006)
"Slow" by My Bloody Valentine (1988)
"Dark Matter" by Andrew Bird (2007)

I wouldn't call it my top 10 of all time as much as I would my top ten as of January 5, 5:14 PM.

The Who - Young Man Blues (LIVE 1970)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Tke1RvPTDY

Oh well a young man ain't got nothin' in the world these days
I said a young man ain't got nothin' in the world these days

You know in the old days
When a young man was a strong man
All the people they'd step back
When a young man walked by

But you know nowadays
It's the old man,
He's got all the money
And a young man ain't got nothin' in the world these days
I said nothing

Everybody knows that a young man ain't got nothin'.
Everybody!
Everybody knows that a young man ain't got nothin'
He got nothin'
Nothin'

Take it easy on the young man
They ain't got nothin' in the world these days
I said they ain't got nothin'!
They got sweet fuck-all!
