The trick is not in choosing a large sheet of paper, but an extremely thin one, almost like a membrane. Each fold makes the thickness double. With 7 folds it becomes 2^7 = 128 times. The edge along which the fold needs to be made becomes progressively thicker

After the fourth or fifth fold, the "performer" states "It's getting hard."
