Cleaning your microwave

Cleaning your microwave - 03/20/07 03:15 PM

I hate cleaning my microwave. First of all, it's above the stove, so it's hard to reach. And there's all these gross little food bits stuck on. I saw a cleaning tip for the job on TV. Take a bowl full of water and squeeze a half a lemon into it, then put the lemon in the bowl of water and lemon juice, place it in the microwave, and cook on high in your microwave for a minute or two (depending on how strong your microwave is, and how dirty it is). The woman on TV said that the lemon juice steam would allow you to simply wipe the microwave clean afterwards.

I found this hard to believe, so I tried it this morning. It works like a charm, and I was so delighted that I wanted to share it here.

Any cleaning helpful tips are always appreciated. Now, if we can only train our pets to make the bed. \:\)

Thasnks for the tip SB.... I always clean mine just by turning it on for about an hour when it is completely empty. That way all those bits of food (mostly exploding eggs) just get nuked.

I had one of those when I worked full-time. It was heaven to come home from work on a Friday night and find the house all sparkly clean and smelling all bleachy. I miss that!! \:\(

Does she have a sister who works cheaply on the East coast?

For those of us without lemons, SB's suggestion of heating up water in the microwave works fine without lemons, too. Heat up about two cups of water (about 3-5 minutes) and LEAVE it inside with the door closed for about 15 minutes.

I tried it a few times and am amazed (to find out) that the inside of my microwave is white!

If anyone watches mythbusters, do not put anything near water right out of the microwave.....it will explode lol

Damn!! I could have saved myself a lemon?? Thanks for that tip, SC. As I may have mentioned here, I am a total sucker for any new cleaning product that comes out, and have bought almost all of them at one point or another. Nothing beats Tilex for the bath, OxyClean for stains, Orange Clean for grease and Orange Glo for wood. And I don't know what the heck they put in that Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, but it truly is magical!!

Thats a "Lori" tip. She owns more cleaning stuff than any woman alive (and her house looks it as a result). She came over to my apartment once to watch a movie... she was gonna put some popcorn in my microwave when I heard some choking noise... I thought my cat was gagging on a hairball but it was Lori after she saw the inside of my microwave.

15 minutes later she had it sparkling clean.

Women stuff.

I don't have to close my eyes and imagine very hard to picture that happening Lori and I share an affinity for handbags and cleaning products.

I have Microcleaners clean mine. Actually, they're little irish people and they do a heck of a job. I just set some whiskey close by and they go to work. Try it. They are so happy to work for an Italian.

Thanks for the tip SB! I have not heard of it, and will give it a try. \:\) Lemon juice too, has been recommended (with water) to clean windows, as well as water/vinegar. Common household products.....who would have thought? \:\)
