what do those three stars mean?

in GF and all of puzo's other novels he uses these stars....after a complete thought usually he will have a blank line separating 2 different things....but sometimes he uses the 3 stars....what seperates them from a normal blank line?

what is their signifigance?

It's a standard literary technique to let the reader know that the author is shifting location, or time frame, or thoughts, etc.

Yes, a blank line usually indicates the change in scene, but when the scene ends at the bottom of the page a new one begins on the next page, there is no way of telling the change, unless some sort of technique is used, which the most common one is the three stars.

I thought it was just for the look. Even I didn't know it had a deeper meaning.
