Have rappers ruined the status of Scarface - 02/13/07 03:30 AM

Ive noticed alot of people taking shots at rappers who refer to Scarface...in a way the movie is more popular now then it ever was due to the exposure rappers have given it..but is that a good thing or a bad thing...any thoughts on the subject

I'm probably the wrong guy to answer this because I'm not a fan of "hip-hop", but I think it's a bad thing.
In admitting how much the movie inspires them, they're implying that the rapper's lifesyle goes hand in hand with that of the drug dealer's.
I LOVE the movie and the gangster movie genre, as do all of you, but they don't move me to conduct my businesses like Tony Montana or Michael Corleone, for that matter.

How could rap music ruin a personal experience?
For me Scarface meant a lot to me, and it meant
something to some rappers. That has nothing to
do with each other...

SCARFACE is above any possible ruination. However, rappers can ruin the status of its smart and tasteful fans.

As i wrote before, No Rappers can ruin the impression Scarface gave and gives me. I dont care about the "all Around" status. I´ts what you think, not what Diddy Piddy P Shawn, or whatever thinks.

Re: Have rappers ruined the status of Scarface - 02/13/07 12:02 PM

Whomever or whatever loves Scarface, no matter what walk of life they may come from, has absolutely no influence on my love for the movie Scarface, nor does their love for Scarface tarnish the status of the movie for me.

However what I do find disturbing is that many of these rappers feel that they can relate to Tony Montana and have taken to imply that being a drug lord and a criminal isn't bad as long as you acheive success somewhere down the line.

What bothers me is when I hear young people defending some of these rappers by saying "look at so and so the rapper, he owns his own record label, his own recording studio and has a mansion and he's only 22 years old. He's successful!"

Well anyone of us could aquire, or could have aquired those kinds of things early in life if we choose or had chosen to take the easy path and deal with drugs and lead a criminal life just like some of these rappers have done and just like Tony Montana did in the movie.

Those kinds of rappers do not impress me one bit, even if they are now legitimate. Because the only reason that they were able to get to become legitimate business men or music producers is because they aquired their money earlier in life by dealing drugs and commiting crimes. So they aquired all their money illegaly and only then were they able to parlay their ill gotten monies into legitimate enterprises.

That does not define success. Some of these rappers and characters like Tony Montana do NOT define the American dream, they just misrepresent it.

It's not neccessarily the rappers that ruin the movie...but their misunderstanding of the story...Funny because even thought I loved the movie Tony Montana to me wasn't heroic in any of his actions, he shot his best friend and isolated the remainer of family he had.

I doesn't matter what the rappers think about it. Scarface is what it is. I think people can complain about just anything nowadays, and make it seem so important. Rap is a form of music, and music is art. So is film. And art is a matter of personal preferance, so if you like Scarface and don't like rap, then fine. But jeez, enough griping about it already, it just sucks the fun out of it. Anyhoo, that's how I feel about it.

No offence to the rap fans I don't like it but they think because theyve been shot at a few times they ARE the Scar Face. I want them to take what he took then try to say they rock. Not to mention they kind of ruined all my rides. I ride to the sop to any where and I here that shit. Old rock rock even contrey is good but rap. They even messed it up by making a song in rap by a rapper called "This is why I rock" Well thats why he sucks.

Re: Have rappers ruined the status of Scarface - 09/24/07 05:16 PM

I don't think rappers ruined the status of Scarface. I don't like rap at all, either. It just makes me sick that all the rappers think that Scarface is part of this trend called "gangsta." To me, it's not. Scarface is about a Cuban gangster! Not a crip or a blood, or whatever! Why do they think that, anyway? And people won't say that rappers were just "influenced" by Scarface, they'll say it is "gansgta!" And that's what sickened me! I really like the director, Brian De Palma, because of this: "When the film was re-released in theaters in 2003, the studio wanted Brian De Palma to change the soundtrack so that rap songs inspired by the movie could be used. De Palma refused." Check it out at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086250/trivia

In a Jay-z song from 96, he has a line
"Had to turn away when tony killed manolo"
i felt that line, cause i knew exactly what feeling he was expressing.
papoose also has a line where he says
"your tony montana? Then im the dude with the black shades and the hammer"
So im for it, i love hearing it as long as they use it right

Re: Have rappers ruined the status of Scarface - 01/27/11 04:49 AM

It's because our "street legends" are guys that are like Tony Montana, such as Nicky Barnes, Carter Brothers, Freeway Ross, Frank Lucas...they made their money from drug money coming form nothing and being ruthless to get to the stop...that why "Scarface" resonates with them. No question, some rappers haven't lived that life, but they take artistic license creating a false aura ....some rappers have actually lived the life...and no Scarface isn't ruined...let me put this analogy :

Made guys were quoting from "The Godfather" verbatim after it came out and love it, same with "Scarface" with street gangsters...if anything, Scarface is a really iconic film within the hip hop community....

The funny thing is hispanic guys, especially Colombians, don't like blacks even though the country has a sizeable black population. Makes me laugh everytime I see a "g" take up the name Escobar.

Re: Have rappers ruined the status of Scarface - 07/14/11 11:19 AM

I know lots of black people who felt the same way about English people or other whites singing the blues or Bo Derek wearing braids. lol

Ultimately once art is out there it belongs to anyone who has interest in it. One's enjoyment of a movie should not be diminished by the fact that other people enjoy it.

People have always mixed ,matched and adapted art and culture to their own needs and interests. It's not taking money out of anyone's pocket here if Scarface is popular with a variety of people.

Rappers are not very well-read or cultured individuals. Colombians, despite having a large afro population, do not like African-Americans generally. So when an aa male uses the name Escobar, scarface, and embraces the latin-america cocaine culture, it makes him look very dumb.

Re: Have rappers ruined the status of Scarface - 08/02/11 04:36 AM

Tony hated mob guys not Colombians, the guy sosa supposedly was bolivian.

Most Colombians don't care about scarface one way or the other. You don't see alot of scarface shirts or anything over there.

Oh and the movie Colombiana which is coming out is a disgrace as it's supposedly based on Rosario Tijeras, which is a quality movie about a female assassin that came out a few years ago in Colombia and is loosely based on real events. Check it out on youtube.

I agree they are all drug dealers and some of them might have records to prove it.But none of these rappers out there made any real money selling drugs at least not enough to start a record company. New shoes and a mercedes and a little gold is not real money. I would say that all that talk about scarface and the mafia in there music is inspiring to be somebody they could never be.

The character Scarface that the rappers so-call embrace was a Cuban not a Colombian. To say that Colombians don't like AA in general is a loaded statement. I'm sure there is a lot of truth to it as many people are racist against AA (although the imitate and look up to them in many areas) however there is no proof that Escobar was racist against AA it appears that his evil ass didn't like too much of anyone just look at the shit he did to his own people. But all in all I agree and add that it's stupid for anyone black or otherwise to embrace Escobar, Scarface etc they were fucking socio paths

On cribs the tv show every rapper always has a picture or a poster in their house referring to Scarface. I just got done finishing a Scarface mosaic that depicts the DVD cover with a beveled mirror in the middle. On the sides are Tony in his pose with his 22 Caliber gun. It will be on ebay in a week I'm just waiting for the 300 dollar frame to be finished. Then it will be ready. It took me 3 months to make it. It's so sick you got to check it out. My username on ebay is chinmusic80. I would love for someone that really appreciates the film to own it.
Thanks sorry to get off topic..

It wasn't that Tony didn't like Colombians, he was scared of them. He was scared of them because they had a lot to protect. Cocaine in it's purest form consists of resources that come mostly out of columbia, anything else added to it is just junk.. Tony didn't like Italians because he didn't want to pay them taxes or tribute or use them to help him clean his money. Tony was just a hungry little runt who needed to just be quiet and go away.

Personally, sometimes I get the feel that a lot of kids today only "Like" scarface because it makes them look cool and look "gangster". But in a way it helped the movie out a lot. Because the hoods were the neighborhoods that were watching that movie more so than anyone at first. They just loved that rags to riches story. I'm sure it started a lot of crime too because I'm sure you had a lot of people who felt like they could be tony montana. But I don't think it was a bad thing. Now a days it is just because it's so outdated. Unless they use a scarface reference in real clever wordplay I'm just not interested. I am a huge fan of hip hop. And I'm pretty old too. But the lyricism(at least when I used to listen to it)seemed so poetic and the way that they would put their words together was just unbelievable at the time in my opinion.

And I agree scarface is overrated. Very overrated. It was one of al pacino's worst performances. He was not good at all. His accents changed throughout the movie lol. I personally enjoy the movie a lot but if I'm critiquing it as a movie critic, the movie was not that good at all. It's kind of like when you like some Adam sander movies, they're funny and may be one of your favorite movies but there's no way it will be any oscar conversation or anything close to that lol.

LOL

Although there is some racism in Latin American culture, it isn't as strong as the racism Italian-Americans have against blacks, generally speaking

Thats a generalization, of course, but most of "white" Cubans know that a good deal of the culture and some of the genes that white Cubans share often come from Africa..more Spain than Africa, unless one is Afro-Cuban, but there is a respect fro Africa in the Cuban culture that was never developed in the United States

That said, most Cuban-Americans don't like African-American leaders and politicians, because Cubans are a hardcore Republican constituency.

@Chisox

.There were and are legal, social, and economic hierarchy in general "Latin American" culture(s) based on things like what "race" your parents were, skin color, hair texture, etc.

The Spanish brought over their system of "classification" over with them to the Western Hemisphere and it was adopted in their former territories.

Look at some of the "castas" paintings. The residue from that system stills exists...some places stronger than others.

About 90% or more of the Africans in transatlantic slave trade ended up in latin america..so it isn't as though feelings towards and attitudes about Blacks are only formed WHEN Latinos come over here. The way they view their Black countrymen forms the basis for their general attitudes about Blacks here.

I think the guy who brought this up as a reason for Black people to not like this film, is offbase..but if we're going to discuss the topic separately..let's speak the truth.

Most of these rappers and such have ruined Scarface for me.

Wannabe mob movie fans lol, thankfully most of these people can't sit through Goodfellas or the likes of Donnie Brasco, for them to ruin those movies for me too.
