Your favourite love scenes - 02/17/06 02:41 PM

In no particular order

"Ghost" - the pottery wheel scene with "Unchained melody" playing.... HOT!

"Casablanca" - the airport farewell. Do I need to add anything? This is pure myth!

"From Here to Eternity" - the torrid kiss on the beach. Even hotter than Ghost, if you consider it was filmed back in the 50s...

and.....last but not least......
...... I'm going to surprise everyone here, but anyway...

"Brokeback Mountain" - the so called "second night tent kiss", the "reunion kiss", the "dozy embrace" scenes. They totally rock!

(others will come to mind)

Speaking of 'Ghost'...actually I far more prefer the 'love' scene much later, when the long dead Sam is occupying Whoopi Goldberg's body and dancing with Demi Moore. Watching that transition and then seeing the two of them embrace/dance (again to 'Unchained Melody) is sheer movie magic.

Sharon Stone and Sylverster Stallone in the Specialist (Bathroom).

The scene from Spartacus when the slaves have already revolted against Rome and have now set up camp. Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) and Varinia (Jean Simmons) are alone and telling each other how much they love one another and she tells him that she is carrying his child. The musical score combined with the acting in that scene could make even the meanest person in the world feel the love that Spartacus and Verinia have for each other.

IMO one of the most underated love scenes in movie history.

I also think that the scene near the end ( SPOILERS) when Spartacus and Antoninus (Tony Curtis) who have now formed a brotherly bond of love between them, are forced to fight each other to the death, with the surviver being crucified. They loved each other so much that one wanted to kill the other to spare the other from the torturous slow death of crucifiction. The dialogue between Curtis and Douglas in that scene is outstanding and shows the deep brotherly love that the two of them felt for each other.

Lol! Yes Bangbus is solid and I really like all of Dirty Sanchez's work especially BTRA and AP (if you know what I'm talking about you'll know what I'm talking about ). Naughty America and MILF Hunter also have quality sites, as well as...ah...I better quit while I'm getting some er...I mean while I'm ahead.

The American President - When Andrew Sheppard and Sydney dance. The magic of the moment when the fire is lit.

Dances with Wolves - When John Dunbar and Stands with Fist first kiss.

Donnie Brasco - the love scene on the steps when Joe Pistone comes home.

GWTW - When Rhett carries Scarlett up the stairs and the next day, she's singing in bed.

And of course, in The Godfather, when Sonny and Lucy sneak upstairs....Magic!

Now we're venturing into the area of "hot" love scenes.

I'm partial to the scene in The Big Easy, with Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin.

There's also a really hot one in Body Heat, with John Hurt and Kathleen Turner.

:D Yes Plaw, a very steamy scene. One that is right up there with the Michael Douglas / Sharon Stone scene in Basic Instinct. Honorable mention for a "hot" scene is the Demi Moore seducing Michael Douglas scene in "Disclosure."

Sharon Stone, Demi Moore. Man that Michael Douglas is a lucky S.O.B.

But I don't think that Lavs started this topic with the intention of talking about steamy sex scenes. I think she really was thinking about true L-O-V-E scenes.

Favorite Love Scene : Spartacus
Favorite Steamy Sex scene : Basic Instinct

There's a moment in Manhattan, with Ike and Tracey in bed, sitting watching a film on TV while eating a Chinese takeaway. Ike half-scorns Tracey for spilling some noodles on the sheets, then she says something cute, and, aware of his half-scorn, he kisses her shoulder and touches her. It's really nice.

Or that first kiss in Before Sunrise. Or the final scene in Before Sunset.

"Brotherly" love? Has to be the "one shot" scene between De Niro and Walken in The Deer Hunter. Ouch.

Sex scene: Laura and John in Don't Look Now. It's too serious to be erotic, too tragic to be stimulating, too real to be looked "down" upon.

There is a scene in A History of Violence which reminds me, but transcends, the one mentioned from Donnie Darko. Coincidentally, it also takes place on the stairs, between a husband and wife, after a rather stressful narrative arc; it verges on disturbingly violent, and Maria Bello ended up with real bruises on her arse as a result during filming.

Cronenberg understands the notions of sex as good as anybody, I think. Crash has some of the most extraordinary sex scenes I've ever seen, with deep psychological undertones.

Along similar lines, Lynch's Mulholland Dr. and Lost Highway's sex scenes, the former between Naomi Watts and Laura Harring, the latter a frightening, disturbing portrayal of masculine paranoia, a slow-motion sex scene between Patricia Arcquette and Bill Pullman.

For a challenging, complex and frank scene (one which merits an "Adults Only" sticker on the DVD case over here), check out Vincent Gallo's The Brown Bunny.

How about their parting scene, where he asks her no to cry?

In the context of Cronenberg (the director), the 1996 version.

The Crying Game...ew.

Re: Your favourite love scenes - 02/18/06 05:33 AM

I guess this would qualify...

One of my favorite romantic scenes in a movie is the "Over the Rainbow" scene between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail. The entire movie, I'm holding back tears, but it's nearly impossible to keep from crying at this part - it's just so darn sweet.

I loved the scene in The Notebook..when they come in from the pouring rain and rip each others clothes off and Rachel McAdams takes off her wet dress and throws it on the floor..the sound of that wet dress...I can totally relate to that passion (of a long lost love returning and the great sex that follows...whoo!)

Yeah...that's another real hottie, and a pretty good film besides, IMO.

Re: Your favourite love scenes - 02/18/06 06:28 PM

So I'm guessing these are scenes of "love," not limited to lovemaking? I'll definitely forget some here.

Le Samourai - The scene towards the end where Jeff and Jane hug and kiss, and he says he doesn't need her alibi.

Abre Los Ojos - The final scene with César and Sofía.

Casablanca - Final airport scene.

Once Upon a Time in America - The dinner with Noodles and Debbie, before the more infamous scene.

A Woman Under the Influence - A few small moments during the film, most of all the end.

Memento - Not between two characters, but Lenny's memories while he burns her belongings.

Mean Streets - The post-sex scene.

Mulholland Drive - The first one in the bed with Watts and Harring.

Vertigo - The rotating kiss scene after Judy comes out of the bathroom.

La Dolce Vita - Actually this is the anti-love scene, but when Marcello goes to retrieve Sylvia from the Trevi fountain, and the water flow stops.

Raging Bull - The few first scenes with Jake and Vickie, before things go wrong.

Goodfellas - The brief pre-sex scene between Henry and Karen.

Once Upon a Time in the West - The final scene where Jill seems to want someone to stay with her, but both Harmonica and Cheyenne must go.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Several little moments.

21 Grams - The sex scene between Penn and Watts.

Double Indemnity - Not a love scene, but the final hug between Walter and Phyllis.

On the Waterfront - When Terry breaks down Edie's door.

Gone With the Wind - Scarlett finally realizes she cares for Rhett, but it's too late.

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror - The final scene with Ellen dying in Hutter's arms.

Broken Flowers - The scene where Don visits Michelle Pepe's grave.

8 1/2 - "Accept me as I am. Only then can we discover each other."

The Insider - The scene where Jeff reflects on his children in the hotel room. Not a lover romantic scene, but an expression of his love for his children.

The Woodsman - Somewhat disturbing, the pre or post-love scene where he simply smells her hair.

Fight Club - The final scene.

Edward Scissorhands - Somewhat corny, but the "hold me" scene.

My choice is the scene in "Laura" (Preminger, 1944), when Lt. MacPherson (Dana Andrews), falling in love with Laura, whose supposed murder he's investigating, goes alone to Laura's apartment to gaze at her portrait, rifle through her things, read her love letters. The rain, the subtle lighting and photography, the haunting theme playing...oh, how wonderful! IMO, the greatest love scene ever--even without so much as a kiss.

Michael Corleone and Appolonia in GF 1.

Yes TB, Laura is most definitely up there as one of my favorites.

Another one that comes to mind is a movie titled "Potrait Of Jennie" with Jennifer Jones and Joseph Cotton.
A beautiful love story and suspense story. While there isn't any specific scene that I can point out, IMO the movie as a whole rates up there as one of the classic love/suspense stories of all time.

Joseph Cotton is an artist who is having a hard time selling his paintings. A woman (Ethel Barrymore) buys one of his paintings, but makes him realize that he'll never be a well known great artist until he finds something that inspires him to paint. He meets a little girl named Jennie Appleton, who is wearing these old fashioned clothes and talking about things that happened in the past. Joseph Cotton does a sketch of her, which he sells to Miss Spinney. She tells him that she believes that he's found his inspiration. A few weeks later he runs into Jennie and she's aged something like three years. Everytime time he meets her, she's years older. Cotton begins painting her portrait and begins falling in love with Jennie. But deep down inside he knows there is something strange about her. The movie gets really interesting when Cotton starts to try and find out what she is all about and begins to dig into her past.
