Names of Robots in movies and tv - 11/24/05 11:42 PM

Me and my mates at work were discussing how some night-shift people have named the photocopiers after artists. Basically they have pasted a nameplate on each one. So far:
Goya, Dali, Hockney and Picasso. I thought this was pretentious and said they should name them after robots in films. We got into a long 'remember the name of a robot in a film' thing. Anybody got any good ones. Obvious ones are very much allowed. Oh and TV is okay too.

HAL - That cold-talking computer that tries to eliminate his human "masters" when they plan to take him out in 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. "Good morning Dave".

HUEY & DEWEY - Two robot companions of super-environmentalist space warrior Bruce Dern in SILENT RUNNING.

GORT - Giant stoic robot monster in Robert Wise's THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. Go look up my archived edition of that great movie from RRA'S VIDEO BIN REVIEW.

ROY BATTY - Okay, technically an android, this "robotic" humanoid only wants to live longer, yet Harrison Ford is on his ass like a fly in Ridley Scott's BLADE RUNNER.

Hi RonnieRocket

I don't suppose you have named yourself after Ronnie 'The Rocket' O'Sullivan, one of the UK's greatest snooker players. Apparently he is now in the US competing in pool championships.

I couldn't remember the guy from Android. I checked IMDB and it came up with MAX404!

This is a trailer. It is heavy on ads. Sorry. You don't have to go there if you don't want.

Interesting idea. I have to side with Ronnie, and say HAL 9000.

On a side-note, I would use one last artist name, just to show some appreciation to Stanly Donwood, for obvious reasons. :p But that's me.

Well that didn't last long. Maybe the wrong site for a sci-fi discussion.

Mark Williams is the snooker king.

And how is naming after painters "pretentious"?

IBM - take one away from each letter, and you get HAL.

I agree. There's nothing wrong with naming things after painters. But you haven't met the night shift where I work.
Press-cutting, which is what we do, is a job for people who have failed at everything they hold true but still need to pay the rent. That's why I'm there. It is best to have a realistic non-romantic outlook. And get drunk while watching movies.

But could we really get away with calling anything or anyone Bender in the UK?

They did names their copiers after famous painters. Bender seems appropriate.

"...sloppy with your drink..." [/b][/quote]First question: Did Yul Brynner have any kind of 'name' in Westworld?

Second question: Anyone remember a movie/TV show that had a computer similar to Hal9000 called 'Bob'?

Let's not forget Marvin the Paranoid Android from Hitchhiker's Guide...
