Martin Scorsese's NO DIRECTION HOME - BOB DYLAN

I'll probably have to get the DVD because PBS will probably air it as a fund raiser and WOW that can be annoying.

Indeed, PBS's fundrasers suck. You'd expect they'd get enough money at some point.

However, I haven't heard about another potential fundraser recently. I belive the DVD had the distinct advantage of having more footage.

I think that movie will be excellent I love Bob Dylan and it's always a treat to see inside of his head especially back in the day

I really wanna see it, but not on TV. There will probably be time edits and censoring, and I'm OCD about that.

I think it doesn't go past 1967 (Dylan's accident), but either way it looks good.

It looks immense, I love Dylan and everything he does. i'm gonna watch this and get the dvd, and so should all of you. For the "JUDAS" part alone

What accident?

In 1966, his motorcycle brakes failed and the bike threw him off. I don't think information was released on how bad he was hurt, but he stayed out of the limelight for a while.

So if Dylan was such a big hit before 1967, when did Lennon get so popular as a solo artist? Early 70's?

I would assume. When The Beatles broke up.

I bought it on Tuesday when it came out. I watched it. Being a huge, HUGE fan of Dylan and Scorsese I figured I was in for a real treat.

I was right.

This is probably the best documentary ever. Better than the Beatles Anthology. It's so amazing. It goes into such a depth on Dylan. The man is amazing. I love everyhting about him. THis movie explores the controversy on his move from folk to rock music and so much more. WHAT A FILM! EVERYONE MUST SEE!!!!!!

Pat, Dylan wrote a song I think you'd love called All Along the Watchtower. Jimi Hendrix did an excellent and superior performance of it guitar-wise, but Dylan's acoustic version is also top notch, and a very beautiful sounding song. I think you should check out both versions. I think the lyrics speak for themselves.

Dylan's versions of his songs are much better. He is much better at crafting his work than others. All Along the Watchtower has been said to be about himself. He now performs it live only as a tribute to Hendrix because it was the only re-done version of one of his songs he liked.

P.S. He didn't like the Byrds. I will say that their version of Chimes of Freedom might be a little better, but that's it.

Yeah, but I still consider Hendrix's music in his version better. He was a God when he picked up his Strat.

I prefer Dylan's vocals though.

I agree with you on Hendrix guitar part being better.

I'd rather take Dylan over most artists anyday. (Any other than the Beatles)

I have a VERY close second:

Neil Young.

Other than that, people's music is great but non can match these guys. Surrealism is the most important element of music and these guys have some songs that just nail them right on the head.

I bought it and watched it today. I agree with the Doc's review - it may very well be the best documentary of its kind I've ever seen.

Easily a "MUST - SEE" for any Dylan fan. Its 100 times better than D.A. Pennebacker's documentary about Dylan and it covers (in fairly good detail) many of Dylan's "early years".

Warning SC, you might lose sleep on the account of wanting to watch it over and over again, like myself.

Don't you love the full-length performances too?

I'm mainly impressed by the candor of Dylan's recollections. I mostly remember him as the angry interviewee of the mid 60's when he was being booed for going electric. He was very argumentative with reporters then (some of those were shown in the movie). Joan Baez' memories were particularly fun to hear.

The early years' footage was awesome.... I had never seen much of it before and to see Dylan wearing the same clothes as he wore when on his album covers was very interesting. The same is true of the coverage of many of his performances (including the behind-the-scenes action) with others.

Also, kudos to Scorsese for a job well done.

Mouth-watering reviews, gents. I'm taping it as we speak (the BBC are showing it, as they did Scorsese's (and others) Blues series).

Did they release the DVD over there? If so, I suggest buying it. The special features are great and the 5.1 sound makes it really worth it.

The Doc

I saw about 50 minutes of it last night. Mesmerizing. I like how Scorcese paints a picture of the social, musical and artistic influences of the time. Watching and listening to Dylan talk in the interview, I realized I've never seen or heard him talk more than a few words. It provided a whole new window into the man.

Next part on tonight. Loved the "I don't mind being shot man, I just don't like hearing about it" and where he was telling them not to boo him.

I tell ya, CHUD.com is right. If Paramount had released this movie in a couple of theaters instead of airing it on PBS...

Then Scorsese would have been up for the Best Documentary Oscar for sure, and probably would win.

To those that care, the 2nd part of Scorsese's documentary is on RIGHT NOW on PBS.

Wowzers, what a documentary...if Scorsese/Paramount had pushed for this to win the Best Documentary Oscar, plus follow the rules which they broke as set forth by the Academy, they would have won easily.

Still, pretty darn good...
