Netflix player?

Netflix player? - 08/19/08 05:35 PM

I already ordered it the other day because sometimes I'm stuck w/o any Netflix discs with nothing on On Demand or on the DVR (let alone on live TV!)... but was wondering if anyone has the Netflix Player by Roku? It allows you to stream about 12,000+ (so far) of their 100,000+ titles onto your TV at no extra cost per title after the $100 hardware investment (and coming soon on Xbox LIVE Gold)

It's supposed to be "near DVD quality", which I'm hoping is better than the Comcrap Digital Cable quality...

Does it play what is available in "instant Play on PC" section or from some other service?

From the 12000 number, I presume it is actually the same as the instant play feature of netflix. Then all you need is an svideo cable that connects your laptop to the TV. That is how I view ALL DVDs on my TV (I don't have a DVD player). The cable costs something like $6 in walmart.

Yeah, it grabs the titles directly from your Watch Instantly queue. Right now I only have 22 in my Instant Queue (as opposed to 358 in my DVD queue), but that'll be enough to get started. The original link should explain it...

All right, I got this player yesterday and it's pretty neat. Setting it up should've been 1-2-3, and almost was. I just plugged it into the Aux Input on my cable box w/ composite cables and that was that. Then I set it up for Wi-Fi, entered my password, and it connected to the Wi-Fi -- but wouldn't connect to the local network for some reason. ohwell So I called support and the idiot on the other end couldn't help me -- he wanted me to call the router's manufacturer for support! I thought that was ridiculous, so fiddled a bit myself. All I needed to do was reboot the router. rolleyes

Anyway, it seems to be working just fine. The quality is pretty good, even on my 36" with the lower-quality composite hookup and the fact these things are being downloaded from the Internet wirelessly. This will be nice when I run out of Netflix discs and there's nothing else on TV. cool

One more piece of advice/warning, though.... most of the shit available on-demand thru Netflix is crap. But there are enough titles/hours to fulfill my spare time while waiting for discs or bored w/ lame cable On-Demand shit...

Shit, there's one slight problem... the Netflix site went down halfway thru a movie and now I gotta wait 'til it's back up. ohwell

I faced the same problem yesterday night frown
But the good thing is that it resumes from the place I left.

No, I meant instant streaming on my computer smile I believe the collection is the same though.

I see, well... I'd rather watch them in comfort rather than at the computer. Even tho it's cool sometimes sitting 12" away from a 20-inch widescreen LCD monitor. wink

No, I too watch it on my 32" HDTV screen smile I connect my laptop to the TV using a SVGA cable (the $6 solution whistle ). Unfortunately my laptop doesn't have a BD player or HDMI cable, but is a problem for future BD movies than at the present.

I just noticed last night that my player was updated (automatically) to include "finer quality with smaller downloads, Netflix HD support, and is ready for Amazon Video On Demand (coming soon)"...

More kudos for Netflix, if you want to relive old (and newer) TV programs! Especially with the player since you can watch them over a period of time w/o holding onto discs for a couple weeks...

I've started watching some old shows from when I was a kid, like Season 1 of Emergency and now Adam-12, and soon The Rockford Files (and many others). I wish Mission: Impossible was on Watch Instantly--I'll have to rent the discs for those. But it's funny to see how dated those programs are now. grin

I didn't know much about Grizzly Adams until about 4 months ago when I decided to stop cutting my hair. My beard and hair was growing wild and the guys at work started calling me Grizzly Adams.

Too bad Grizzly Adams isn't on NetFlix, I would like to see some of that.
