RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/25/07 10:48 PM

Note: This blog is written from Eastern Time Zone bias. Take that California!)

5:32 PM - My Live Oscarblog for GangsterBB.Net begins now...in utter boredom. The bastard adbomination that is E! Television has been airing a mind-numbingly "Pre-Oscar" coverage that purports to be talking about who will win the awards, but since most of the Oscars tonight seem to be locks, the E! covereage is instead concentrated on more urgent headlines.

You know, like fashion. Supposedly some women tune into the Red Carpet coverage to watch for what the celebrities are wearing. "Supposedly."

After a hour of this, I won't ever complain again about the overlong, brain tissue-destroying pre-game coverage on Super Bowl Sunday.

5:37PM - Jennifer Holiday, one of the original 1980s Broadway stars of DREAMGIRLS, belted out a tune from the Bill Condon-directed film adaptation. She's performing on the rooftop, when the Oscar workers are busy trying to get the auditorium ready by 8 PM so the only audience listening to her is people watching E! Television. While I feel bad for her, she still did a nice job.

I did laugh when the E! camera, heavily focused on Holiday, caught a glimpse of those cool billboard-size ZODIAC ads. No, I don't know why I laughed at that visual.

5:44PM - Who wins in a bitch fight? Julia Roberts or Jennifer Lopez?
Posted By: ronnierocketAGO

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/25/07 11:00 PM

5:55 PM - You know, I just realized that after more than a hour of watching E!, they finally start talking about the Best Picture Oscar nominations....indirectly. E! has been giving heavy coverage to the backstory of DREAMGIRLS' production, and whatever Lindsay Lohan will be sober tonight. Thing is, I wonder if the producers for E! TV thinks DREAMGIRLS is actually up for Best Picture and Best Director. Otherwise, its pointless.

Which makes me wonder....is David Poland working behind the scenes for E! TV today?

5:59 PM - My final Oscar predictions will come in a few minutes. Then you all can have a legal excuse to beat me down on the ground when I'm wrong. Its ok folks. I know where you live.

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/25/07 11:11 PM

6:07 PM - TV spot for the upcoming Mark Whalberg action-thriller SHOOTER. You know, I actually was interested in seeing it, until I read this blurb in the credits. "Directed by Antoine Fuqua"

6:10 PM - James Mcavoy on the red carpet. If the internet rumors are to be believed, he'll play Scotty in the J.J. Abrahams STAR TREK movie. The sad thing is, I might be the only person that cares about this.

I gotta go with Jennifer Lopez. Those Castle Hill girls fight like men !

I agree. Both are vicious, but who is more likely to maul someone's face off?

J-Lo baby!

Why's that?

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/25/07 11:21 PM

6:20 PM - Speaking of a J-Lo/Roberts bitchfight, who remembers from back in 2001 when Julia Roberts was locked to win the Best Actress Oscar for months? She wins, and she gives her well-rehearsed "surprise glee" look. Yeah, J-Lo breaks her teeth.

6:23 PM - Michael Sheen was really good as Prime Minister Tony "Bush's Poodle" Blair in THE QUEEN. The difference between the two men is that people generally like Sheen it seems on the Red Carpet.

Hey, first cool celebrity sighting tonight...LARRY DAVID! Yeah, eat it Donnie Darko's sister!

I'm a Trekkie. I figured I might be the only person that cares about this news nugget.

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/25/07 11:23 PM

Are you kidding, I'm no Trekkie, but there are millions of them out there who are salivating over this new movie.

It's "the early years", right ?
Posted By: bogey

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/25/07 11:23 PM

Ah, well I had no idea there was going to be a new Star Trek movie. I usually watch The Next Generation, but sometimes I catch the original.

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/25/07 11:25 PM

Yeah Pizzaboy.

Anyway, it'll either work or it'll fail.

Besides, JJ Abrahams is the problem. His ALIAS was incredibly overrated program with questionable writing that I consider less-substantive compared to say....Jay Leno.

Anyway, I thought his TV-quality direction for M:I 3 was weak. So yeah, I'm skeptical as hell.

I've never been a big sci-fi guy, but I loved QUANTUM LEAP. I still watch the reruns.

I'd like to see a big screen adaption.
Posted By: ronnierocketAGO

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/25/07 11:30 PM

You know that Sci-Fi Channel is doing a TV movie of QUANTUM LEAP, right? Its supposed to be the proper "finale" to the cult-favorite series.
Posted By: pizzaboy

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/25/07 11:35 PM

No way ! I didn't read that.

The finale was ok, it's just that we always expected at least one reunion movie to bring Sam home.

I gotta do a search now.

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/25/07 11:36 PM

6:30 PM - Filmmaker John Singleton on the red carpet. After BOYZ N THE HOOD, his career was sporadic with decent-if-forgettable efforts (POETIC JUSTICE) and outright garbage (the SHAFT remake, 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS). However, I really enjoyed the hell out of his 2004 blaxploitation-inspired B-action movie FOUR BROTHERS.

Anyway, really liked his comments on Scorsese's expected triumph tonight. Very gracious. Now if Singleton can get LUKE CAGE made....

6:33 PM - With 90 minutes before Showtime, the Limos are piling up. Imagine if gangbangers ever use Limos for hit & run jobs? Yeah, I could so see a fight between the gangs that dominate Hollywood: ACC (Abused Children of Celebrities) and the RR (Rehab Renegades). Oh no, I see Christian Brando and Isiah Washington duking it out on the street corner! My money is on the former convict.

6:36 PM - Al Gore now on the red carpet. When INCONVENIENT TRUTH wins Best Documentary tonight, will he use this to announce his 2008 Presidential run on the stage? Pfft! Dream on Fox News....

6:41 PM - On second thought, if Al Gore did pull such a stunt, it would piss-off Hillary Clinton even more. Go Gore '08!

Japanese chick from BABEL trying her best to speak English. Hey, I'm getting Engrish for free tonight!

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/25/07 11:48 PM

6:47 PM - What the hell? Why is there John Madden-like doodling substituting as commentary on Jennifer Hudson's lousy dress?
Posted By: ronnierocketAGO

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/25/07 11:55 PM

6:54 PM - Poor Penelope Cruz looks like that midget elf from the second HARRY POTTER movie.

Anyway, Jodie Foster really looks great tonight....for a mummy.

Careful Ronnie, Jodie's wife looks tough.

6:59 PM - Screw E!, I'm switching over to ABC at the turn of the hour.

John Travolta on the red carpet. Damn, I forgot that Forrest Whittaker is a scientologist. I guess the mothership finally got him.
Posted By: ronnierocketAGO

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/26/07 12:02 AM

7:01 PM - Barbara Walters looks tired. Did she just get in a shouting physical brawl with Rosie earlier in the afternoon?

Oh good, pizza is here!
Posted By: ronnierocketAGO

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/26/07 12:07 AM

7:06 PM - You know what is ironic? ABC's Pre-Oscar marketing junket for the Oscars tonight is making a big deal of Ellen Degeneres as a "gay" entertainer. Ok, so what's the big deal? ABC cancelled her series after she came out of the closet.

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/26/07 12:09 AM

It's almost painful listening to Ryan Seacrest try to be consistently witty and exciting. I mean I don't hate the guy like some do, but live TV can be tough.
Posted By: ronnierocketAGO

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/26/07 12:12 AM

The problem that Ryan Seacrest is having to deal with tonight is having to ask over and over..."Who are you wearing?"

7:12 PM - In the Oscar afterparty, when Britney loses her wig and Lohan vomits, who will get more paparazzi photos in the morning?

Better yet, who's the bigger loser?
Posted By: MistaMista Tom Hagen

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/26/07 12:12 AM

I feel like I would love to just hang out and have a beer with Leonardo. He just called Seacrest "man" 4 times and "brother" once. What a dude.

I like Martin. But the amount of Oscars that one person has won should have absolutely no bearing on nominating them again if the work that they did that year warrants it.

It's like telling a Baseball player who won the triple crown last year that he cannot win it again this year even if he leads the league in all the required categories.

The Departed was twice as good as Flags Of Our Fathers. There's a reason it was a bomb at the box office (hint, it was all hype)

So Marty should win it even though his film doesn't truly warrant it, isn't that why they have Lifetime achievement awards?

I think the real reviewers vote with their brains rather than their hearts.

Quit the hate on Marty. It's his night (finally) brother.

In your opinion, it doesn't warrant it. The Departed was great.

Give just one...just one measly little Oscar....to Marty.

I like Martin. But the amount of Oscars that one person has won should have absolutely no bearing on nominating them again if the work that they did that year warrants it.

It's like telling a Baseball player who won the triple crown last year that he cannot win it again this year even if he leads the league in all the required categories.

I agree but I wanna see Marty win so badly that I don't care. Screw Clint and everyone else. LET'S GO MARTY!

Oh please...its the OSCARS. You seriously think its a legitimate awards program? Scorsese doesn't need it to redeem him as America's best living filmmaker.

But, it would be nice for him to win one for once. You have a heart, right?

You are right the Oscars are about as close to a real award show as this thread is to a real reviewer

If you truly cared about movies you'd want the best person to win at all times, it didn't happen for him for those 2 movies but that doesn't mean someone else should get screwed, thats what they have lifetime achievement awards for.

Well, I'm glad DaMoraleCommissioner is here to compete in a dick-size contest with me.

Besides, there is a mortal flaw in your argument. If not Marty for Best Director, who should deserve to win it more than him?

Surely you haven't seen LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA (worth watching) and I don't see you as the sort of guy to champion BABEL or even LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE.

To be honest, Paul Greengrass is the most deserving of the nominees, but since his movie didn't get a Best Picture nomination, he never could win.

So quit your morale dance. Besides, this is a fun little thread for the movie buff fans at BB.Net.

Glad you enjoyed it. Personally, I enjoyed See No Evil more (I'm more of a horror fan myself AND it was the first WWE movie and it surprised me how good it was). But I did buy The Marine and there were A LOT of explosions in it as well. I'm looking forward to WWE's third film, The Condemned coming out in April staring Stone Cold Steve Austin

The Condemned reminds me too much of a Van Damn flick though.

See No Evil was good, I thought it was going to be cheesy but Kane pulled it off well, and you actually believed the character. I thought the ending wasn't that good though.

I liked in The Marine where they said about Cena being like the Terminator and the guy who was driving (I forget his name but he was in T2) his eyes rolled, that was great lol Although I could have gone without seeing him jump out of what, 4 exploding buildings?

I didn't see the big "thing" with it after the first viewing (plus I had already seen Infernal Affairs so I knew what the movie was about and how it ended). However, after a second viewing and a possible third shortly (I'm in the mood to watch it, ESPECIALLY if Marty wins tonight), it's grown on me. And yes, movie types does play into it too I think

I agree, I thought Kane did a very good job. I don't really remember the ending (it's been a while since I've seen it), but again, it really surprised me how good it was because I thought it'd be cheesy too. Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/26/07 03:35 AM

That has got to be the worst movie of the year.

I love how one of the talkshows or something said "Snakes on a Plane has to be one of the scariest things to think about when you are that high in the air"........yeah its not Terrorists on a Plane, its definitely the snakes that airport security is screening for lol

I agree. I didn't think it was worth all the hype. Not bad and I love Samuel L. but overall, it'll be an easily forgettable movie

I'm probably one of the few who thinks Scorsese is superior to Coppola, Spielberg, and without a doubt Lucas.

I'm glad The Departed got the better awards and this is one of the better awards I've seen. Between Scorsese and Morricone, it's the year of the guineas for the awards.

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/26/07 05:22 AM

Well, I left this thread because of some people that were being jerks. Not Don Cardi, he was cool. I didn't care for Flags of Our Fathers, but so what? its just movies.

I was conducting a live blog, 7 hours straight(damn!) for AndersonVision. Check it out where I continued after I boycotted this thread of my own creation.

http://www.andersonvision.com/PostNuke/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&p=149

I know that me, Pizzaboy, Mignon, DonAndrew, and great Irishman are just so damn pleased that Scorsese has finally won. Decades of fustration off his shoulders now...and man, you watch his speech? He almost lost his shit, real emotional and such. Being with his fellow "Brats" of the 1970s added wood to the fire.

I liked that he applauded his fans hoping for years that he wins. What a nice touch.

I don't know if THE DEPARTED deserved Best Picture at all, but I don't care honestly. Except I did win 20 bucks on my Best Picture bet.

However, what I cared about, was Scorsese winning...and it happened.

Good night folks!

I gotta say Ronnie, you did well with your picks.

I guess Alan Arkin was just a mild upset but you still had him.

Martin's films have his distinctive touch: it's not crime drama. It's filled with confident film making, suspense, tension, a love for cinema. The man is a god of cinema and tonight was his night for one of his best films.

Re: RRA's Live Oscarblog! Opinions welcomed! - 02/26/07 05:53 AM

I agree with Sully and Hagen.

Thanks Pizzaboy.

All I know is that I can nag my fellow Oscar predicter for the next few days:

"You know, I was right about LETTERS winning Sound Effects Editing and Arkin"

Then he'll drive over to my house and beat me up. Until then, I have free reign. Woo!
