Balut

Ok, Don Sicilia, this one's for you.

3 co-workers yesterday brought in Balut for lunch. They offered some to my boss. I think he said he's still trying to get the "fowl" taste out of his mouth. haha.

Basically, it's a duck fetus inside an egg. Not my cup of tea. It's time to bring in Andrew Zimmerman.

Gotta love balut, but too much makes you feel ba-loated.

The girl who sits next to me took a picture of theirs with her camera phone. I'm just glad I was gone for the day already.

My boss said he bit into something crunchy. He thinks it was a beak.

Uggh! Hamburger anyone?

Ugggghhhhh.

I've never eaten one, but we always use it as a threat (e.g. "if you don't do this, you'll have to eat a balut.")

The rest of my family can eat it though.

I think my room would be spotless and they'd never hear anything but a "Yes ma'am and Yes sir" uttered from my lips with that kind of threat. haha.

I'm currently working my way through three Anthony Bourdain books in rapid fire succession.

I'm sure "balut" is mentioned in one of them. I remember that when I read about it, I had to put the book down for awhile. Guess I'm not (and will never be) that adventurous.

For the record, the books I'm reading are Kitchen Confidential, Cook's Tour and Nasty Bits. I'm pretty sure balut isn't in the first one I named, perhaps one of the other two. But I definitely remember something like it being mentioned.

I also seem to have a recollection of seeing someone on TV eat it. It was either Bourdain or Andrew Zimmern.

None for me, thanks. Yeeegh.

My son ate rabbit heads in China.

My co-workers are still walking around here saying they're not bad, that me and my other co-worker should try them. I said I'm not brain dead yet.

They taste like chicken (or duck), Crabby!

Yeah, I'm not going anywhere near one, but I know lots of people who love them.

One of the guys has a son who's about 4. He said when he's a teenager he'll get him into eating them. He says it'll make him a man. I said it'll make him bulimic. haha.

I pride myself on being willing to try any new foodstuffs but i truly think i would rather eat my own underpants than have a nibble on a balut

Given those choices, cook me up some balut!

I would need at least 10 pints of ale in me before i could even think about chewing on that

I've tried it before. You need to put salt in it. The juice is tasty. I picked through it though.

Now that sounds like a good idea - and to hell with the duck!
