Balut

Balut - 06/24/09 01:42 PM

Ok, Don Sicilia, this one's for you. wink

3 co-workers yesterday brought in Balut for lunch. They offered some to my boss. I think he said he's still trying to get the "fowl" taste out of his mouth. haha.

Basically, it's a duck fetus inside an egg. Not my cup of tea. It's time to bring in Andrew Zimmerman.

The girl who sits next to me took a picture of theirs with her camera phone. I'm just glad I was gone for the day already.

My boss said he bit into something crunchy. He thinks it was a beak.

Uggh! Hamburger anyone?

Re: Balut - 06/24/09 01:52 PM

Ugggghhhhh.

I've never eaten one, but we always use it as a threat (e.g. "if you don't do this, you'll have to eat a balut.")

The rest of my family can eat it though.

I think my room would be spotless and they'd never hear anything but a "Yes ma'am and Yes sir" uttered from my lips with that kind of threat. haha.

Re: Balut - 06/24/09 09:05 PM

I'm currently working my way through three Anthony Bourdain books in rapid fire succession.

I'm sure "balut" is mentioned in one of them. I remember that when I read about it, I had to put the book down for awhile. Guess I'm not (and will never be) that adventurous.

For the record, the books I'm reading are Kitchen Confidential, Cook's Tour and Nasty Bits. I'm pretty sure balut isn't in the first one I named, perhaps one of the other two. But I definitely remember something like it being mentioned.

I also seem to have a recollection of seeing someone on TV eat it. It was either Bourdain or Andrew Zimmern.

None for me, thanks. Yeeegh. uhwhat

I've always said I'll try anything once but with that I'll have to break my own rule.

Hi Mig,

Gee, I'd almost preferred tangled guts (is that what it's called?). Although what a hell of a choice. I think I'd rather die. panic

It looks like it's just boiled like a regular egg.

Eyes of a dog? Reminds me of a line in Adams Family II.

Gomez: (looking at the new baby) "He's got my father's eyes".
Morticia: "Gomez, get them out of his mouth".

One of the guys has a son who's about 4. He said when he's a teenager he'll get him into eating them. He says it'll make him a man. I said it'll make him bulimic. haha.

I've tried it before. You need to put salt in it. The juice is tasty. I picked through it though.
