Songs That Don't Have Their Title In The Lyrics

Probably a short lived thread because I doubt there are that many. I was listening to the radio today where they had a segment of songs that "didn't have the song title within the lyrics of the song." I only got to hear the last few (it was a top 40 of sorts).

Not particularly in this order, but close:

Sunshine Superman - Donovan
Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers
For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield
Land of 1,000 Dances - Wilson Pickett

Oh and the number one song - Maggie May - Rod Stewart (FWIW, one of my all time favorite songs and artists)

Nope. The chorus has "Greensleeves" mentioned. Fun fact- Greensleeves is thought by some scholars to indicate grass stains on a lady's clothes from where she was "having fun" outside.

Way to go Goombah & Lilol!! I forgot so many of LZ's tunes apply. And Lilo, thanks for the correction on Greensleeves. Pretty song, but like I said, I couldn't quote all the lyrics. Oh, and Rainy Day Woman (#54?)???? I love that song but didn't quite get the title. Perhaps he was saying the subject of the song is a "downer?"

don't be fooled TIS this thread could go on forever. just reminded me of my favorite band of all time Kyuss and some of their best songs like "Gardenia" and the best song of all time "supa scoopa and the mighty scoop" (how would they sing this???)

Wow, all the Zeppelin songs - didn't even think of them! I have this problem where I can hear a song I know really well, but I have trouble remembering the title...so maybe this isn't the game for me.

Speaking of Zeppelin, weren't most (or at least at first) of their alubms 1,11, 111 etc? I don't even remember the title of the one album I have. The old man with hay/straw on his back with a mountain background if I'm not mistakent. I don't think there's a title on the cover. It has Black Dog, Immigrant Song, Stairway To Heaven on it. Lots of great songs.

The first album was self-titled. The next two had the appropriate numbers. The fourth one was untitled. The ones after that all had names.

At the time of the release of their fourth album, which became known my some as Zoso or Led Zeppelin IV, the group was criticized for releasing a record without the name "Led Zeppelin" anywhere on the front/back cover. In addition, no song titles were visible. At the time, it was considered commercial suicide. Now it is regarded as one of rock's greatest albums of all time.

Ok, replying a couple months later.... BUT I think I have that record (on 45) Nicky. I like the song. As a matter of fact I saw the Cowsills in Michigan when they first came out. If I recall, a mother and her children. I also liked their version of "HAIR" a song from the Broadway play back in the olden days.

Great thread, TIS. And like TonyM says, like the Energizer bunny, could go on and on. Couple of things I noticed, most cited tunes are rock -- and from a particular point in Pop music history. Whether that's a reflection of the music at the time or because of our own ages, or both is a good question, I think.

Also, being an inner city kid at the time, more into rhythum and flash than social angst, it was Motown, Stax, etc. all the way all the time. Interestingly, it seems also 'soul' music was more apt to contain the title than other styles of musical expression. Don't know why that is.

Another cool thread along these lines would be songs whose titles we all got wrong. For the life of me, can't think of a single example, but too, bet there are loads and loads.

Viceguy, OR just a thread about lyrics we misinterpret. I'm thinking maybe years ago we had one but why not again?

My two daughters made me laugh several years ago. They were playing "Summer In the City" by The Loving Spoonful and they both thought the opening line was "Hot damn, Summer in the City" (instead of 'Hot Town.") Made me laugh.
